i just bought a 2008 grand vitara about a month ago and its developed an awful knocking coming from the motor so Im pretty sure im gunna have to tackle this job and ive never had to do a timing chain before, so this is extremely helpful
Very concise description of a tedious process. Will be doing a rebuild on a 2.5l to swap with the hard broke 2.0l (previous owner spun a rod bearing and lunched the crank) on the in my 2002 Tracker. This gives me a good heads up on what to look for during the timing process, thanks for the video.
Thank you Matt! I followed your video and my 2004 xl7 fired right up on the first try! This is definitely a brutal job-the dissassembly is hardest, setting the timing was relatively easy. I'll never complain about working on my jeep 4.0litre straight 6 again! LOL
Very helpful, I bought a 2003 Suzuki XL7 from a guy that didn't know a lot about cars, it needs some love. I knew the timing was out somewhere, bought cam and crank position sensors, no help, acts like a valve or two is hitting the piston. Not looking forward to getting this far into the engine, but videos like this are great!
I just want to say thank you for this great video you are very prompt and explaining right now I'm working on a 2002 Chevy Tracker it has a 2.5 Suzuki engine I've got the whole timing chain kit and tensioners and water pump I'm working on this vehicle right now job from hell I just want to say thank you for your video it really helps me a lot very helpful thumbs up thank you
Ive done a water pump on there is quite a bit too take off the front and top too get too the timing covers lol, once u remove the water pump the tensioner will also pull up on the timing chain and skip a tooth if you choose too remove it for the new water pumps clearance to be reinstalled make sure u hold that camshaft in place 😆
Thanks Matt, great video at helped me a lot with fitting timing chains to my 2004 XL7. I had the full manual, but a video like this is awesome for confirming it is done right.
Great video, this will be my third time checking the timing marks as when i put it carefully together the last time and drove for a while i found the car was lacking power on hills. after deliberating with many people including mechanics and suzuki technician it was pointing to being a tooth out somewhere. It is a tedious job and hopefully i can solve the problem this time around.
you will have about 1-3 tooth spread before damage will be caused to the engine. yes it is a very tedious job! let me know if you want to trade emails or need any help over the phone.
I know I'm 5 years late to the party but... I noticed the secondary chain has 7 links between black marks in one section, then 8 in the next, and 9 in the next one after that. 7 goes on top.
Hi Matt. I very much appreciate the detail and time you’ve put into this series of videos. It gave me confidence to attempt to replace the valve stem seals on my GV 2.7L V6 (2007). I am now up to putting the timing system back together and I have a question about LH (bank 1) cam positions. When I place and tighten down the cams they rotate a bit because of the spring/cam resistance. How do I rotate both cams and hold them in place to put the small chain back on? Or is something wrong- did I mix them up? I can’t find any info on identifying which cam is intake and which is exhaust. Any advise is most welcome!
I put my Tracker 03 ' 2.5 engine, together with ur vidio; i need to ask you a guestion about the oil being sucked into rearanifold and out pipe in big clouds of smoke.
Hi, matt, I do in your video I turn 4 rotation i fell good no resistant all the mark is aligned, but I have I little confused what piston will be top tdc rigth side or left
Hey matt, great video. Im having an issue my gasket kit came with 2 small cam seals, but i cant find them in the manual, also when i dissasembled they werent there ..... Pls i need your help with that!!!
Did anyone have the tourqe specs for all the cam gears an tensioners ? Just went through an done all this but cant find those specs to tourqe up.the bolts
What year is this suzuki please. Because i have 2004 Suzuki suv 4×4 2.7 the 0il signal is on. An the engine makes noise so i hope i can do the timing belt an get lucky 😁😁
Hello, i was wondering if you can help to find a car scanner that does all the maigor test and work on the following cars , suzuki grand vitara 1998 and mistubishi pajero io 2002, thank you looking forward for your reply
I have problem with my grand vitara. When i installed the timing chain the two pistons in the area where it had two cams not working. It got a miss. Is it a timing fault ?
I Just Bought a Suzuki used one 2008 grand vitara v6 2.7 lts. They reap me off Now i m dealing with it Anyways The engine starts on time (No hesitation at all) Temperature looks good after an hour of driving Runs pretty good on flat surfaces...except hills My problem is that - the scanner plug doesn't work. (Can't read any codes) - I Just found that they disconnect the oil sensor or knock sensor - It looses power after warmed up going up a hill. - it makes a rattling noise by the driver side of the engine. I m fixing to run all types of tests .... Oil pressure , engine pressure (compression) Any other suggestions Thanks for your advices
Hey matt me and my husband have watched all ur videos..they were very detailing and helpful..ok..so..not sure where to begin. I have a 2000 suzuki grand vitara 2.5l few wks ago i was driving and my timing guides broke in very small pieces needless to say i bought timing chain kit and replaced all timing guides tensioners and all 3 chains..ok heres the problem after getting truck pieced back together it took 1 day for it to finally start when it did white smoke came out from engine and exaust, it did eventually stop smoking but main problem is the engine shaking puttering ticking kinda loud and low hissing kinda noise from behind engine and behind battery which im assuming is exaust not sure..i talked to my dad he says timing is still off..but my husband swears he did it right..i dont think so lol..anyway have one more questions for the valve cover and cylinders tubs for sparkplugs does it need o ring and gaskets..cause my husband says cylinder tubes are high so it doesnt need oring gasget and he also only put ultra grey gasget maker on valve cover but no actual gasget..is that a problem? Please please help..ive been without my truck for 2 wks now
We have just replaced the timing chain guides and did it right but now the problem is its cranking but not becoming live It seem as if the ignition is not live what could be the problem
I've done lots of timing chains before but never on a Vitara. The guy at NAPA says, "This is what happens when a company that makes motorcycle engines tries to make car engines." I love Vitaras though so wish me luck.
This is honestly one of the worst engines I've ever worked on in my life, I've never had this horrible of an experience with any other motor, wtf are the engineers smoking at Suzuki 🙄
@@r.a.p.k.models4160 the infamous Duratec 3.5/3.7L engines look like a real pain to do as well, I think I would prefer the Suzuki waterpump over the Ford by a very small margin.

How do you know if you're crank is on the compression or exhaust stroke?
Or doesn't it matter as long as you set your gear correct position?
Shit looks like I'm going pay someone for this job... Thanks for helping.
Great video Matt. I have a question. I have a 2002 2.7 v6 in my XL7 , would this be the same procedure as the 2.5 your working on .

Great video ! The one thing I learned here is that this is one engine to avoid.
La tradition en Français .
great engine but lubrication is the key- on time oil changes
do you have a video installing all this?
biggest would be assembling the right hand cam chain set.
Jut curious because I just bought one of these cars, why was this job being performed?
Do I have to release the tensioners after or before aligning the sprockets in their timing marks?

This engine is made in collaboration with mazda since suzuki never before did a v6 they first made the h20 ,then the h25 , then the h27
Hi
The car won't start. It has been completely repaired. The timing chain has been replaced. It is set to timing marks.

Mazda give them ideas on this engine
remember they come from designing high reving motorcycle engines- very dependable if you keep oil changed
