      @@bfdadventure no it will not. The zermatt is a 2 lug and the Solus is a 3 lug. My gunsmith tried a tikka, Curtis and I think American rifle company wrench and none of them worked. Aero Precision has told me and others that is a proprietary wrench and should be released soon!

    I just added up the cost of building it with a 10 rd magazine vs buying it complete and it looks like building your own saves you about $50. Might as well buy the complete rifle for 2 grand. Unless you have some major parts already laying around like a barrel or a trigger, or both.
    Edit, I forgot the proprietary wrench, so I don't know how much that would cost.

    • @ShootingTheBC
      @ShootingTheBC  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Or you want a different chassis and trigger. I like the diamond trigger and I already have barrels for my origin so for me it’s a no brainer to get the action. Also, if you want something in a chambering they don’t offer or different contour and length etc. As a entry PRS you would be better off buying complete rifle IMO

    If you are using the nut, you don't need an action wrench, just a barrel vise. I have put barrels on several actions that have nuts, using the proper GO gauge and they all tested perfect after things were tight. All you need to do is put the nut wrench on before you put the barrel in the vise, spin on the aciton, put in the gauge make the final adjustment and hold the action with your left hand while you tighten the nut with your right. The last one that I did was a Mack Bros, before that A Bighorn, and before that a couple of Savages. On the other hand if you are putting a shouldered barrel on, yes you need their wrench. I will be curious as to its price.

I'm just learning, and the black Friday deal shipped (and FFL charge) I got was less than the ARC CDG msrp. I also didn't have to wait months. I think this is a great starter bolt action. I will say I “hand tight” my shouldered barrels because they lock in really well if you put it in the stock and put stock between your feet for stability and then wrench on it by hand fast and hard to seat the barrel. I wouldn’t do it for anything bigger than say 6.5 prc because with magnum loads it might be an issue but for 6.5 creedmoor and 6mm creedmoor I haven’t had any issues and check it every time I go out to shoot.

    • @ShootingTheBC
      @ShootingTheBC  ปีที่แล้ว

      I’ve seen that done before, I personally like torquing them so I know it’s exactly the same every time! Never been brave enough o try the “snap twist” method!

    • @zacharyfelkel7924
      @zacharyfelkel7924 ปีที่แล้ว

      I feel like it’s more consistent than torquing. Think about it this way. If all it takes to move the metal .005” is 70 ft/lbs and you do it every time you pull a barrel off and swap barrels then how much more accurate is it really. Because I feel like at the torque specs some people use they are compressing the metal and it might not be by much but it can’t be anymore or less than “hand tight” but do whatever makes you feel comfortable. I’ve never torqued a barrel to specs but I will say I do have a little more strength than most do so it’s not for everyone.

    • @ShootingTheBC
      @ShootingTheBC  ปีที่แล้ว

      If you watch some videos from preferred barrel blanks on installing barrels, they do this with a towel or rag to protect the action. I wouldn’t personally do it, but I do think it’s possible. I actually think if you have a barrel vise you may be able to do it with just the barrel in the vise, but perhaps the action will spin too🤷‍♂️

    So I'm pretty new too this . Well building . So is this essentially a bolt action upper ? I currently have a areo percussion lower and the lower parts kit . Buffer tube and spring and but stock. Just haven't bot an upper and barrel yet. So could I basically build an AR platform bolt action with this ?

    • @ShootingTheBC
      @ShootingTheBC  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      No this is it an upper. This is not compatible with any AR parts. This is a traditional style bolt action receiver. It goes into either a stock or chassis (which can look some what like an AR). The new trend as of the last 5 years or so has been going to the AR mindset of making parts to where someone very easily can put a barrel on an action and bolt it into a stock quite reasonably. Machining technology has allowed this that wasn’t possible in the past. So no, it’s not an AR upper, but the idea is to be able to build it as easily as an AR. Probably more easily to be honest. Hope that helps!

    are zermatt origin barrels different than a savage prefit? I thought the Origin just uses Savage prefit barrels with a savage small shank and savage barrel nut. Do the origin prefits not use a barrel nut? how does it headspace then? Thanks

    • @ShootingTheBC
      @ShootingTheBC  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The thread is savage small shank, but they hold tolerance to headspace off a shouldered barrel. Each action is identical so they can do that. Not every brand is capable. This action also uses the origin prefits, so it’s a shouldered barrel, no barrel nut. You can also use a savage barrel with a barrel nut if you decide, and you would use headspace gauges to set the barrel properly and tighten down the barrel nut.

    • @fullnelson3028
      @fullnelson3028 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @ShootingTheBC
      @ShootingTheBC  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@fullnelson3028 it is wise to check headspace with go/no go gauges, but a shouldered prefit doesn’t leave you any way to adjust or change headspace. The actions that allow shouldered prefits are held to tight enough tolerances that the headspace is the same from action to action. I don’t know the exact process but I know if a barrel headspace’s on one action, it will headspace on them all, with a Zermatt Origin they’ve been around long enough and enough of them tested to know that claim is true. With the Solus they are saying that is the case as well, and for my action, it seems to be true also. I hope that helps!

    • @artiefishing
