to be fair, after the first 10 minutes, this game does devolve from a horror game into a literal clown show (which is still scary for some but this game genuinely lost all atmosphere for me once we get locked in the basement)

I used my little sister's chalk to write on the sidewalk near my house "press shift to run" and put a rectangle around shift to make it look like the button key. I live in a townhouse so a lot of people walk by it and I know some neighbor kids saw it and giggled. My dad also saw it when getting home from work and found it funny (he plays video games and has a bad hip so he literally cannot run). Sadly, it got washed away by the rain.

My theory on the plot:
As a kid, Peter (MC) went to the park with his real father - Steven - but was lured away by a man dressed as a clown, the clown kidnapped Peter and drove him back to his place, where he locked Peter and two other kids in cages and abused them - the other kids ended up succumbing to their wounds and passing away, but Peter was saved at the expense of serious trauma. At home, Peters sleep was plagued with nightmares of the clown and what happened, which fucked with their mental state as a child and caused them to father a kid that was getting abused - and when feeling threatened caused him to act out and get labeled a maniac.
At some unknown point in Peters early childhood their real parents were murdered and replaced by the "Married Couple" that'd escaped the asylum, Peters then maternal figure abused him because of his trauma induced nightmares and hallucinations - including locking them in the basement and even behind a fake wall where I assume the mannequins were, part of the trauma even caused Peter to go astral and face all their trauma that'd happened to them. To prove that their monsters existed, he set up a noise trap. 3 hours later, his presumed mother went to go down the stairs but triggered the noise trap and fell down the stairs to her death.
Crushed by the thought that he'd just murdered his own mother, Peter hid her body behind the same fake wall he was forced to sleep behind. I'm not too sure about what happened to the presumed father, but Peter was left with heavy trauma. Things looked up at the orphanage, though. Peter eventually stopped having nightmares and even got a psychotherapist who we see in the end. But at the very end it's revealed by the shadow that the doctor - Peter's psychotherapist - was the paternal figure, the one that'd murdered his real father. You can tell this by the Doctor's shadow being a demon.
Please feel free to correct me on anything as I could likely be wrong.

This game brings me "Don't be afraid" vibes. Like there are so many things that is analogous to "Don't be afraid". For those of you who don't know, "Don't be afraid" is also an indie horror game about a child sneak out to go to his friend's house at dead of night, get kidnapped, and play a sick game with a psychopath. It includes gory mannequins that the psychopath has stuffed his victims (mainly the children he tortured) in, his daughter who he deformed her face into a living horror (through surgical process) in her birthday, a wife who he decapitated and put in a mannequin, and a clown named "Theodore" which looks exactly like the in-game clown. This might be a sequel to the game, maybe the boy grew up traumatized and the experience haunted him again considering what he has been through. Considering the fact that the boy's mother did not care about her son sneaking out every night, she has some problems with her parenting too. I don't know if it's just the same category of horror game, that would be upsetting because this looks too good to be a separated game that it must be somehow related.

So this main character had like _everything_ bad happen to him: Absentee father, abusive mother, kidnapped by a clown and kept in a cage for about a week, accidentally killed his mother with a bell on a rope at the top of the stairs, and then developed Capgras delusion to excuse his crime.

@@min_says_h3110 Not quite, every source I can find makes sure to make it clear murder and manslaughter are distinct crimes, the only link being they both involve death (not that the distinction in this case actually matters a whole lot, but it's good for future reference). In order to be classed as murder, the death of an individual must have been intentional or premeditated in some capacity.
Only really important because they did it as a child, completely unintentionally, so I doubt they would have been tried too harshly.

Mark seeing a baby about to do a backflip off a skyscraper: "Not my baby, not my problem."
For those who don’t know, that drawing on the wall of the two boys (Sam and Calvin) is actually from a short game called What Remains of Edith Finch. It’s a story about a very unfortunate family where for generations many died at young ages. Sam was a hunter and Calvin wanted to go to the moon, hence their outfits
Edit: this entire thing is a horror game based on What Remains of Edith Finch, Barbara is another character from that game

The beginning bedroom with the boys MUST be a reference to What Remains of Edith Finch. The twin boys (Calvin and Sam height chart at the beginning), Sam loved taking pictures and wanted to join the military, and Calvin wanted to fly and be an astronaut. ("And now I can fly when I sleep!") They shared a room and had similar wallpaper.

yeah its the same asset from edith finch, they made some assets from the game free to use on a certain engine. its a subtle homage.
There is also the poster Mark read out. He directly says "Barbara Finch" from what was written on the movie poster.

i was geniunely so confused by the "sam and calvin" sign because i was like "that looks like something from the tales of edith finch, that one video game". i decided nothing of it but then there was "FINCH" written on something and then the poster of barbara?? i got so, so excited because i absolutely love the edith finch game.
I was confused too when I saw the Sam and Calvin sign, I just decided to look up a playthrough and skip to Sam/Calvin's room to see if it was.
I genuinely think they used some of the assets to fill some of the empty space in the game. (Edit: Grammar)

So... there was a family: a mother, father, and three kids
A couple escaped a psychological hospital, killed the parents and pretended to be them for the children. The couple abused the children, killing two of them. One of the boys experienced astrol sleep and dreamt of monsters in his room. The mother decided to put him in the basement where his fears only grew. The father took him to an amusement park where he left him alone with a clown. The clown kidnapped him and when the police found the boy they took him back home. The boy was scared, he thought he saw monsters walking in the house. He set a trap and he heard a scream, he bolted out of bed and found his mother at the bottom of the stairs dead. The boy hid the body and lived his life with therapy. He said he dealt with all the monsters but his therapist points out he didn't kill them all. I think the therapist is the insane man who raised the boy like a father.

Oh, I thought the therapist was saying that the boy was a monster himself. I thought the boy was the man grown up at the end, whose shadow was the devil. That would explain why throughout the game, you could see the devils shadow, because it was his own? Was I wrong? lol I'm confused also.
Or he actually killed his mother. His parents were abusive and neglectful, to the point he actually got kidnapped by a psycho. He comes back home trying to recover from the trauma and starts seeing monsters everywhere. His mother, unfit to understand that he was actually experiencing trauma, tried to make him "face his fears" by hiding him in the basement. She was mentally ill as well and couldn't see that her son was also going down that rabbit hole. Instead of actually getting treatment for the both of them, she continues to mistreat him and locks him away. He starts to resent her all while he dives deeper into his psychosis. Eventually, he snaps and the "monsters" got to his mother, but it was really him who pushed her down the stairs all along. To soothe his conscious, his mind remembered it as a "monster" killing his mother. He hides the body so that he doesn't get blamed for it and to deny that it ever happened. In the game, we see him older and talking to his psychotherapist who is pushing him to go back and relive his childhood for closure and healing. Unfortunately, talking about his childhood triggers him and puts him back into psychosis. Now he sees the psychotherapist as a source of pain and abuse and see him as a monster. And you already know what happens when he sees monsters...

I remember watching playthroughs of Fatal Frame as a little bebe horror fan in 2009-2010 and one of the things that stuck with me is that broken neck ghost. Also crawly ghost scuttering around on the floor. Makes me want to revisit the whole series just thinking about it.

It's mostly unfunny zooms/closeups with some reverb and text added in. It just takes me away from the video. Sometimes Mark's comedy is ruined by the edits even. It's really annoying. I just like watching Mark play the game.

Kinda wanna grab a spray can and find an abandoned factory so I can tag the wall with "shift to run"
I did that two years ago but it wasn't on a meat factory it was a wooden sign that I found on the side of the road I put it up in a abandoned house with the words "shift to run" but then I heard a loud ass noise and ran out of there. Just to clarify I wrote the words before hand and I was slightly drunk when doing so.

I’m not sure if someone already mentioned this, but during the flashback we can see that the room is shared by two brothers named Calvin and Sam. Could this be a reference to What Remains of Edith Finch? In that game there’s also two brothers with the exact same names, and coincidentally enough both Calvins love space and both Sams love the outdoors.

My main problem with the game is that the light from the flashlight somehow seems to have a delay :p as if light doesn't go at.. the speed of.... light....

The delay of the light moving is probably trying to simulate the disconnect between turning your head and moving the flashlight in your hand, but most people would aim the light before turning so that's kind of a moot point
@@shika404 or if we consider that this man is delusional and this is him dreaming (he's not awake or "astral" as he claims at the end), then it's closer to simulating how flipping a light switch in a dream doesn't actually turn a light on or off because your brain is deciding whether or not the light is there, there isn't actually any running electricity (besides neuro-) in that switch. So your brain is reacting to your decision to turn and *then* adjusting what is illuminated in the surrounding dream. I mean the real reason is likely technical, but on the off chance it's intentional that would make a good reason lol
Sure, light moves fast, but the hand holding the flashlight doesn't move at the speed of light.
The visuals were appealing however... the game's story was all over the place. It's like the dev/s just regurgitated all their ideas on the floor. There's no organization with the storytelling whatsoever.

It was a certain kind of storytelling. More from the perspective of the person you're playing as rather than a coherent storyline. Dreams- nightmares, memories like this- they won't always be so organized, so easy to follow and understand. Thoughts in themselves are irrational, constantly buzzing around in your head. Or, perhaps have you had the luxury of never dealings with anxiety, or ptsd?

For those who don’t know, that drawing on the wall of the two boys (Sam and Calvin) is actually from a short game called What Remains of Edith Finch. It’s a story about a very unfortunate family where for generations many died at young ages. Sam was a hunter and Calvin wanted to go to the moon, hence their outfits
