Those water purifying packets were initially used for non-profit to help areas in developing countries have access to clean water. Later it was sold in the US for profitable services and it’s been at least a decade since it was made by p&g and the centers for disease control. It separates sediments with flocculant and kills bacteria, viruses, and parasites with a chlorine compound
With water it's always a hit or miss. I'm used to filling up bottles in streams when hiking and never got sick from it. I think the general base rule is to never drink from stagnant water, so no puddles, no ponds, no sides of rivers or lakes where the water slows down. And of course if you know it's a polluted area or if it's a popular dumping spot where assholes come to drop off trash don't even think about it. Streams are always your safest options but it's better if you know the area and have a general idea of what's upstream. Of course you can never be 100% sure that there isn't a dead squirrel marinating in your water a couple meters upstream or that a deer hasn't decided to poop in that exact spot five minutes ago but a night of tummy ache is way less dangerous than keeping hiking in the sun while tired and dehydrated
I understand it's a meme but the main purpose of the packet is to kill waterborne bacteria (rated at 99.999% effective) and viruses/parasites (rated at 99.99% effective). Those ratings are of course an average and nothing can be guaranteed, especially with user error, but those kinds of purification packets from P&G (and others) really are a lifesaver if used properly.
@@averydillard8435 it's still contaminated with aluminium sulfate and possible organic compounds along with heavy metals. It's not magic like people think. I'd use a portable filter and then boil the water. Anyway it's for emergencies or maybe for reckless people impersonating Indiana Jones or that p¡$$ drinking guy.
For those who dont know, yes, it is drinkable. But it's not "clean" water. It's the water you might get from a tap, with chlorine. If you prefer actual water, boil it.
I've studied water treatment during my degree of chemical engineering. This is the exact same process that your water supply that runs your tap water is. Except on a larger and much more refined steps that makes it even better. True this water isnt the cleanest water but its "clean enough" to not cause serious complications. And yes usually in 30-60 minutes the water from the inlet of the water treatment plant already made it to the end of the process. And those plants process thousands of litres per second. Biochemistry engineering is amazing.
@OLGA KOGAN cause 3rd world nations cant pay. there is no way in hell would people just give tech like this for free, and since 3rd world countries are poor, they cant afford water treatment like this
Is your product made out of bentonite clay? I use bentonite clay to clear up my homemade beer, the clay attaches to all sediments in the solution and weights it all and causes all solids to conveniently settle at the bottom. A very useful product no matter if your clearing beer or drinking water
It's step one... looks like some sort of flocculation agent. It clumps the sediment together and lets it fall out of suspension. Step 2 is a heat or chemical treatment to kill pathogens. Suspended particles will interfere with chemical treatments, and taste absolutely terrible when heated.
Depends on where you are. In Germany very low amounts (max. 0.3 miligram per liter)*can* be used if the source is contaminated, but it's not standard procedure to add chlorine all the time.

The microbes in the water: Let us introduce ourselves
The powder doesn't just clump up the dirt it also has cholrine in it that kills the microbes so yeah do your reaserch before commenting
After cleaning the water you can simply boil it

@@vibin7278 yeah you can drink it but I suggest boiling it first to be safe
@@averydillard8435 it's still contaminated with aluminium sulfate and possible organic compounds along with heavy metals. It's not magic like people think. I'd use a portable filter and then boil the water. Anyway it's for emergencies or maybe for reckless people impersonating Indiana Jones or that p¡$$ drinking guy.
For those who dont know, yes, it is drinkable. But it's not "clean" water. It's the water you might get from a tap, with chlorine. If you prefer actual water, boil it.
Protozoas: “yo why you all falling down?”
It's just flocculant. That doesn't purify the water. You would still need to boil that water before drinking it.
Absolutely correct. The floc just binds small particles to each other so they sink. Id doesn’t purify the water at all.
Apparently it has disinfectant in it as well. Not saying it's good

Wow. Interesting. Thank you for helping the world and studying this for us. ❤️

Is your product made out of bentonite clay? I use bentonite clay to clear up my homemade beer, the clay attaches to all sediments in the solution and weights it all and causes all solids to conveniently settle at the bottom. A very useful product no matter if your clearing beer or drinking water

this is super satisfying
Theres a diffrence between clear and Clean id recommend you boil the treated water after the purification process.

Depends on the source, tap water is basically used water also some water brands. There'd only one water brand I prefer
It's step one... looks like some sort of flocculation agent. It clumps the sediment together and lets it fall out of suspension.
Step 2 is a heat or chemical treatment to kill pathogens. Suspended particles will interfere with chemical treatments, and taste absolutely terrible when heated.
Microscopic straws, somewhat easy to produce and can even sanitize the water meaning no heat required.
Don't forget to boil it for at least one minute before using!

The amount of people that don’t understand that chlorine is used to treat any water you drink is mind blowing. Tap water, bottled water, etc.
Depends on where you are. In Germany very low amounts (max. 0.3 miligram per liter)*can* be used if the source is contaminated, but it's not standard procedure to add chlorine all the time.
I actually drink chlorinated water to cure illnesses. Chlorine dioxide. Works.
i dont think that is safe to drink 🤔

This is actually perfectly drinkable after you purify it. There is no need to boil it or anything else.
