    My advice is to buy travel size of perfumes when you’re starting out. A travel size will last you a while and you can buy big bottles of the ones you truly love.

    Tip#1: Don't force yourself to like what everyone is raving about. If you don't like you just don't like it. Nothings wrong with you.
    Tip #2: Like what you like. Drugstore, designer, niche. When people compliment you on your scent they can't tell which is which honestly.

    Mine would be: 1) It's better to have a smaller collection of fragrances that you absolutely love and enjoy, than to have big one filled with fragrances that you only like; 2) You don't need to own all the beautiful fragrances in the world; 3) Don't let your favorite fragrance reviewer cause you to spend recklessly; many people on this platform don't spend their own money on half the fragrances they constantly promote.

    • @DeniseAdore

      These all very true! I absolutely agree. I see a lot of ppl buying a lot and then decluttering.

    -sample first

    My taste has definitely changed over time, and sometimes in shorter intervals. I have a Scentbird subscription and I remember getting scents I crushed then tried them again later and didn’t love them as much. So, I have learned that my preferences aren’t always fixed. And that body chemistry makes a difference. I’m perimenopausal, so that is affecting how I interact with fragrance these days.
    However, I know I love a good powdery/airy note, so I look for those. I keep hearing folks say that’s old ladyish and oh well! I’m now 45 and it finally fits! 😂
    I also love a good clean or skin scent. I can’t do overly strong fragrances. I like certain citruses now. And not all vanillas work for me! My fave gourmand is No 7 by English Laundry. It’s creamy, light, and fresh to my nose. I’m at the age where I don’t want to smell like a sugar cookie or sickly sweet candy.
    I like scents that lasts, but isn’t offensive. I enjoy my scent bubble but don’t want to overwhelm myself or others.

    • @DeniseAdore
      @DeniseAdore  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I like powdery scents too. I don’t care if ppl feel like it’s old lady 😂 I’m glad you’ve found what type of scents you like because sometimes it takes ppl a long time to figure that out.

    • @quanitawinters-tyler3770
      @quanitawinters-tyler3770 ปีที่แล้ว

      One of my faves is Poison Girl by Dior.
      Violette by Molinard
      I lean towards softer fragrances, but there are some that punch you that I also like, yet they have that powdery/light note like Delina Excllusif.
      I enjoy trying new scents to see what I like, but always return to my soft powdery skin scents.
      (I get so sad when they discontinue scents I loved like Chloe Love)

    My advice would be…Scent Split, Twisted Lily, ZGO perfumeries, any sample/decant site is your best friend. Test all fragrances ON SKIN before committing to a full bottle. It may smell one way on paper and completely different on skin.
    Also, I recommend starting a collection with more designer fragrances than niche if you’re new to fragrance and not just because of the price. Your nose may not be welcoming to the complexity of niche perfumes at first (mine damn sure wasn’t). And, if you’re trying to learn notes, it can be harder to do that with niche fragrances that blend notes really well.

    • @DeniseAdore
      @DeniseAdore  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Great tips girl! I absolutely agree testing on skin is mandatory because it can smell totally different from paper from my experience. Samplers and decants are always a smart idea 👍🏼 I agree my nose had to “grow up” into loving niche fragrances 😂 I struggled at first too. 😉

    Awesome content babe! You have some really excellent gems for the ladies to follow.
    The best advice I can offer is:
    Don’t let people make you feel bad for buying a good dupe! Not everyone want to pay $300 for BR540 or $355 for Valaya so if you find a dupe that smells like the original and it’s in your price range, buy it! I’m so over hearing “just save your money and get the real thing” sometimes it’s not about them not having the money to spend. I have several friends that can afford the original fragrance but they choose to save their money and buy an inspired fragrance for a fraction of the cost. At the end of the day, whose walking around showing the bottles to prove they have on BR540 instead of Al Haramain Amber Rouge?

    • @mrs.t6847
      @mrs.t6847 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Yeesss. Every time I wear dossier ambery saffron i get stopped and I tell them it's an inspired version of br540 without that medicinal smell.

    • @DeniseAdore
      @DeniseAdore  ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Thanks babe! I agree it’s nothing wrong with dupes. I have dupes that I love. But if you’re wearing a dupe then own it. If someone asks what you wearing say Amber Rouge instead of BR540. I think I would just say save up and get the real think for the people that buy 5 different dupes of BR540 trying to get a better one than the last. To those I would say you could’ve just bought the real thing.

    • @jessicatrimn3296
      @jessicatrimn3296 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      @@DeniseAdore That’s very true. If you have 7 bottles of the same fragrance, chasing the “best” one, that’s a waste of money.

      @Jessica Trimn the whole entire truth. No, ifs, ands, or buts about it. I am a dupe queen.😂😂People always compliment me on my fragrance. They swore I have niche perfumes on. I have been reading notes of fragrances since the 90s. This is why I take some of these influencers/creators with a grain of salt. They way the economy is going, we truly try to keep our accounts flowing. Who are lugging bottles of perfume around? It's ok to treat yourself. I found some dupes that are better than the original. Remembered, some of these influencers/creators are receiving these items for free, let's be real about that too.

    A real good tip is to go to Nordstrom to the lelabo counter. Smell the bergamot, rose, vetiver or any of their scents. That will help you point them out in other scents and easier if you were to blind buy. I've learned I don't like patchouli but I have some with it in there and I can't smell it. It's there to ground it. I am an year around fragrance person so I tend to lean more to them. Jomashop and LaBelle are my go to places for my fragrances.

    My advice for people starting would be *buy smaller bottles* - travel size if available. When I was new to this, my logic was “well it’s cheaper per ml to buy a 100ml bottle” but now I have almost 50 bottles and I feel like I will never use all of it. It’s gonna take an eternity.
    Nowadays I prefer to buy 10ml and 30 ml bottles. It makes me feel like I can actually get some of them empty lol

    • @DeniseAdore
      @DeniseAdore  ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Climate! That’s the biggest and greatest advice next to purchasing travel size. What a lot of people don’t realize is they could be following someone who lives in a total opposite climate as themselves. I learned the hard way! I live in Utah but I was born & raised in Hawaii & my collection back then was 1) much smaller 2) sooooo different from what I have today. Never would I have purchased Oud. Smokey. Heavy. Bold fragrances - all my faves. Back then it was florals & a few freshies. Also, I’m very heavy handed with my sprays. Back home, a few sprays will last all day.

    • @DeniseAdore
      @DeniseAdore  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yep that’s exactly why I mentioned climate because I know someone’s collection and favorite types of fragrances can be based on the climate they live in. So it’s important to take note of that when listening to influencers recommendations. 😉👍🏼

    Thanks for sharing, good advice! My advice is don’t go down the rabbit hole of buying dupes. There is a newer and better dupe every day, it gets costly trying to keep up. Get a decant of the original to try it out. If you absolutely love it, save your money until you can get the original. There are a lot of places, as Denise suggested, where you can get the authentic originals at a discount!

      I would not buy multiple dupes trying to imitate the same fragrance. That's just a waste of money. But some Dupe houses have great original fragrances or even hybrids. If the original is great but it doesn't last, sometimes dupes will create them to last longer but it really depends on the fragrance. Discount sites for the win cuz I'm never paying full price!

    Hold on to your samples. It may take some time for the fragrance to settle and/ or macerate its full potential (scent, longevity, projection). Also, as you smell more fragrances you may find your tastes have changed. One tip I would add is consider you’re lifestyle. If you’re someone that’s mostly a homebody and just go to work and home, you probably don’t need a bunch of hot and heavy beast mode fragrances. You’re probably gonna wanna lean more too crowed pleasers that are not offensive.

    Good tip on buying smaller bottles. It's easy to get convinced to buy the 100ml when you compute the price per ml versus the 50ml bottles. It always feels like we get to save money for more and then the perfumes go bad before they get used up.

    Great advise. Subscriptions are great to try out fragrances and if you can’t afford the full size bottles you can keep that scent in your rotation; you can still enjoy it without spending the coin. Discovery boxes are great too especially when there is more than one scent that you want to try from the same brand.
    Update: I’ve gone through une nuit nomad discovery box and favorites are: jardins de misfah, fleur de fleurs, sun bleached, nothing but sea & sky, and suma oriental. Mr vetiver and memory motel are a no for me (gave them away). Click song, bohemian soul, and amber khandjar were ok but won’t purchase. Tried bello rabelo and that’s a no for me too; leaned just a tad too masculine for me. Getting atomic rose later this month and tabac rose next month.

My budget is tiny but I want to explore as much as I can. I'm afraid of missing a gem because I prejudge something. I collect discovery sets (especially the choose-your-own ones like BDK) so I can try a wide range of the house's offerings and I don't skip something that has notes I'm iffy about. In that situation a subscription or sample set from a company will save you. Otherwise, if you live in a major city go smell perfumes in store because it’s free. I also go smell a perfume several times and try it on the skin a few times before buying. I need to know how it’ll perform before shelling out money.

    I started collecting perfumes last fall. Per some others advice and I'm sure listed here, try before you buy. Go to the store (if possible) to smell in person and buy travel sizes. That's what I have been doing now. I have several Kayali travel sizes and I know which ones I will be getting a full bottle of once they're done. I have a mix of niche and dupe (Dossier and DUA) perfumes, and I have my eye on a few designer ones. I am wearing my perfumes seasonally fall/winter and spring/summer, but I'm in the mood for it I'll just pull of whatever. If the niche is not an absolute love I'm not getting it, or wasting money on it. Thanks Denise for putting me on Jomashop it's the best! Mercari is also a good spot to get used perfumes (if one is OK with that) to try out as well.

    I love Flower Market but, I get not liking the opening cuz it legit smells like walking into a small florist shop. It's giving really green, fresh cut flowers sitting in a bucket of water. I agree the dry down is more subdued.

      Definitely enjoyed the dry down but it was like an hour after. I can wait 10 minutes but after that I’m like nah 😂 I didn’t hate it but just did love it enough to want a bottle.

    Thanks for the video. I am less than six months into my fragrance journey. I own a handful. My advice? Get a decant from an online retailer like Micro perfumes. Have people buy you discovery sets as gifts. Spray on perfumes when you’re at Sephora or Ulta.
    I decided that I’m probably going to be the queen of cheapie and indie perfumes. I’m ok with that. (Do I own Guess seductive, seductive red, and seductive noir? Yes. Yes, I do.)
    I have had nothing but positive interactions from my discussions on Fragrance TH-cam.
    Don’t limit yourself to only female content creators in the fragrance world. The School of Scent has great, informative videos. The Perfume Guy has informative videos, too.
    But what you like. Unless you’re talking to a hardcore fragrance lover, no one knows the difference between Baccarat Rouge 540 and Baccarat Rouge 540 extrait.

      That’s a good tip to have ppl buy you discovery sets. I agree with trying on fragrances in store and walk around with them for a while and let them dry down. I also watch male fragrance reviewers. Some of them are very informative. Yea I’m a hardcore fragrance lover so I know the difference between the original and Extrait and that’s just something that ppl learn over time if they want to. 😉👍🏼

      @@DeniseAdore I bought a discovery’s set from Oakcha a few months ago. Most of the fragrances are inspired by more expensive scents. I really love Torrid Day. It’s Oakcha’s take on Tom Ford’s Tobacco Vanille. My daughter just bought me a Kayali discovery set from Sephora. Years ago, my mom bought me an Atelier Cologne discovery set from Sephora. I didn’t know I was a vanilla perfume person until I smelled their Vanille Insensee. Such a beautiful scent. I hope they start selling their perfumes in the US again.

      It opens with a lot of black pepper which threw me off at at first. But then it settles into a salty vanilla coconut still with a little pepper.

    My sister and I have been trying to figure out how and where we can learn scents.

    • @DeniseAdore
      @DeniseAdore  ปีที่แล้ว

      It’s definitely a lot of trial and error. But I started by looking at the fragrances I have and looking their notes up on Fragrantica.com the notes aren’t alway 100% accurate but they’re usually very close. So once are started to understand what notes were in the perfumes I knew I liked. I started to look for other fragrances with some of true similar notes with something a little different so I would have scents that all stayed the same.
