Why pianists don't play piano transcriptions of sinphonies? I don't understand. I like all of Beethoven's sinphhonies in orchestra performance and in piano. Why this is not popular?
@Piotr Gołacki hmm I feel like Wikipedia often says stuff like that. It doesn't sound as difficult as, for example, some of Liszt's own compositions, or Ravel's transcriptions of his own orchestral pieces(!) Not easy still, tho.
It's also very difficult, because you lose the orchestral texture, although this interpretation of the Pastorale I am enjoying immensely. Partly the Steinway has such a nice texture on its own, partly the pianist is awesome, and partly I think this symphony might lend itself more to piano interpretation. The 5th is okay in piano, but I much prefer the orchestral version, and that's coming from a guy who's pretty partial towards the piano usually.
As a quite good amateur pianist, I can say that I am able to play most Beethoven sonatas (except maybe the Hammerklavier). As for the Liszt transcriptions of symphonies, I tried to play several of them, but I realized that it was beyond my technical capacity, at least in public and at the "normal" tempo. So, yes these transcriptions are immensely difficult, and this is the main reasons why even very good professional pianists do not dare put them in their concert programs !
