Jimmy Buffett - The Wino and I Know - Directed by Delaney

  • How did you spend your quarantine? Jimmy Buffett asked the fans to tell him which songs, not in his usual repertoire, would they like to hear? Within minutes, over 10,000 tracks were requested. Some songs he had to re-learn as it's been so long since he played them! Directed by Jimmy's daughter, Delaney Buffett, the docuseries is an inside look of the stories and inspirations of the songs.
The series has become a fan favorite which of course evolved into recording his favorites with producer/bandmate Mac McAnally and Coral Reefers Peter Mayer and Eric Darken. Available at: smarturl.it/SYDKBH

Thank you Delaney for sharing a little piece of your father with us all. We wish you all peace and love during this difficult time, but know that your Dad inspired so many people to look at their lives differently and learn to stop and appreciate life. We were lucky to have known him a little through his music and shows. You have been blessed to be his daughter. I cannot imagine a greater gift. Cherish your memories and thank you for sharing your time with him. He changed the world for the better. That is a life well lived …

I met my husband in November 1980. We got in my 1977 Camaro and 8-track of Living and Dying in 3/4 Time and "The Wino and I Know" started playing and John knew all the words…that sealed my love for him. Plus he could sing & pick. He told me if we had children, he wanted a daughter! ❤️

We discovered Jimmy Buffett in Atlanta in 1975 when he still sang songs like *The Wino and I Know.* It was in a place with the ostentatious name of *The Great Southeast Music Hall* located in the back corner of Broadview Plaza, an L-shaped strip shopping center on Piedmont Road in north Atlanta.
Except for great musicians like Jimmy performing there, it really wasn’t all that great. You sat on the floor on bench-like cushioned seats fastened to the floor like church pews with the legs sawed off.
They sold pitchers of beer outside the auditorium in the foyer and ticket area. We walked in a little late but it wasn’t very crowded. We sat almost front row, just right of center. We had gotten there quite by accident.
We had driven into Atlanta from our Cobb County suburb apartment to see a movie at the theater next door, but had arrived too late and the movie we drove in to see that evening had already begun. We were standing around outside trying to figure out what else to do on a Friday night in Atlanta and I walked over and was studying the black and white publicity photograph behind the “Now Playing” glass by the entrance to *The Great Southeast Music Hall* next door.
A sign under the photo read *Jimmy Buffett* and my wife asked me if I had heard of him. I said, “I think so, but I’m not sure.” I thought about it for a minute and with the clock ticking and an impatient wife looking at me to decide and no better options, I said, “Oh why not, let’s give it a try” and we walked in.
The concert was great. After the show I walked over to a record store located next door and bought his then current album, his third from a major label and the one I still consider his best to this day, *A-1-A* Fate was really smiling on me that night.
Soon afterwards I bought his first album, then his second, fourth, fifth, sixth, etc. (I think he averaged about one album each year for a number of years until his compilation / greatest hits albums started appearing.)
The next time Jimmy was in Atlanta we took our best friends. We continued to do that and each time we returned the crowds were bigger than the time before. Then they started making you buy your tickets in advance.
The last time we saw Jimmy at *The Great Southeast Music Hall* they had two shows each evening and the waiting line to get in wrapped around outside and down the sidewalk in front of the neighboring stores.
While standing in the line waiting to get in I told our friends that would be the last time we saw Jimmy perform there and it was. After that the Atlanta venues got bigger and bigger. We saw him in places like the *Atlanta Civic Center* (great acoustics) and *The Omni,* our basketball arena (terrible acoustics!) and they were all packed.
He might not have been heard much on the radio, but as far as his fans were concerned, he had arrived. We bought his albums and attended his concerts whenever he was in town.
In 1976, the year after Jimmy’s epic *A-1-A* album, I bought a new 2-seater Datsun 280-Z sports car (around $7,500) and couldn’t wait to drive it down to *Key West* to check out the scene of its inspiration for myself.
Although technically just one state away, the drive from Atlanta to Key West is the same distance as Atlanta to New York City.
On August 8-10, 1978, Buffett recorded his first live album, *You Had to Be There* (we were!) in Atlanta at our grand old venue called the *Fox Theatre* where *Gone With the Wind* had premiered just over four decades earlier in 1939. (No, we weren’t there for that! 😎)
At the Fox we had terrific seats, center balcony, looking down on the stage. What an epic evening that was!
Great Jimmy Buffet memories from what we thought were great years to be living in Atlanta as young people.🧨

He Went to Paris and The Wino and I Know are my two favorite songs of all time-I wrote my college entrance essay about this song back in 1996. And after hearing of Jimmy’s passing this morning and listening to some ballads, rewatching this put a smile back on my face. Thank you for showing us how to live our lives like a song. Gonna have a cheeseburger, margarita, and some beignets tonight.

Me also. Lived in Pascagoula-Moss Point from '55 to '67. Slower pace of life full of memories. Picnicking at the Beach Blvd park, swimming in the Gulf, sometimes cruising Market Street, or stopping for a milk shake at the drive in at the north end of said street. Memories of good times and good friends.

Every time I hear him singin' and strummin', I feel that same joy in the memories they always conjure. In many ways, Jimmy was as great a songsmith as Dylan, maybe better. Even at the end of video, he started to say "...brings uhh... CONJURES up memories." Such a natural talent, finely honed over a lifetime to always find a more beautifu way to impart magic with every phrase and utterance.

Of all of his songs this has always been my favorite. The lyrics are very philosophical and illustrate a great deal about my life. I am a retired principal who put in a total of 42 years as an educator. “Trying to get by, being quiet and shy, in a world full of pushing and shoving.” Despite the demeanor I showed , that describes me as who I really am.

Self-described as a singer of inordinate tunes, the record labels tried to put in a genre category and could not make his songs fit anywhere. He had a bit of off-center view of life much like some others that had a "cult" style following --AKA "ParrotHeads". I always just liked his music and subjects.

Thank you for making these videos Delaney. I will miss JB forever. I have seen him at least 40 times and was so excited when summers in the Cincinnati area brought him back to town.

I love this song. The entire album is special to me. I only have a cassette and always search for a CD. This post is very special. Thanks for sharing.
