‘Variegated’ String of Hearts Dying in Propagation Box

- Hello, I’m a plant parent who enjoys sharing what I learn along the way. A few weeks back I made a propagation box for my variegated string of hearts. I was having a lot of trouble getting the cuttings to root however. It wasn’t until I made some improvements to the propagation box to improve the consistency of moisture, that I began to get some success.

Mine have not been doing well. I am going to order big pots and forget about propagating. It's not as easy as it looks. Also I would do it in pots of soil inside a prop box if I ever tried it again. It would be so much easier without having to transplant.
I experimented with propagating my regular SOH in 3 media: soil, perlite and sphagnum moss. The worst one was sphagnum moss. The plant took forever to root! Perlite was pretty good but soil worked the best for me. I got a small pot of VSOH 5 weeks ago and it only had 1 root system and 4 nodes but the leaves were tiny still. I took a risk and cut them up (butterfly method) the same day lol and stuck it directly on the soil. They all rooted in about 10 days under artificial light. I placed the pot inside a ziplock bag. The soil was moist still at that time that I didn't need to mist the plant.
Ruby!! You're AMAZING! yayy to happy thriving plant props~
@@plantspoetry How's your vsoh propagations doing right now?
I realize this video is a few months old but I really needed it because YES! I too struggle with "prop boxes"... I have a large one where I have several different cuttings and some take and some rot. Moe rot than NOT lol. I have a smaller one for my VSOH and so far NOTHING. I know they take a while to root compared to non variegated so I am being patient. We shall see. I watch others and theirs seem to work great! Full and lush with cuttings. UGH. I was relieved to see I wasn't alone. That's why these type of vids are so great. Showing the struggle is REAL is important. I have been growing indoor and outdoor gardens way before it was trendy and I still learn something new everyday and things are NEVER perfect. Thanks so much. I love the support! Keep up the great work! xoxo
Hi Pudgey Planter, I'm so glad you struggle with these prop boxes as much as I do! hahaha instead of big lush cuttings, I just get mouldy ones :(( Thank you for your kind words
I found out propagation boxes works better without holes, i just open it once a week and put it under a grow light
Hi Valery, oooooo grow lights! that's smart!
My VSOH is too small to propagate, but I've heard the best method is to take a strand and lay it over a pot of soil, but dont cut it. If the tiny bead-like tubers are touching soil, they'll eventually sprout roots. This way, there's zero risk involved
Thanks for the great tip Gabriel!
I soil propagated about 18 containers of V. SOH a week ago and noticed some leaves were dying- both cuttings and cuttings with tubers. I worry that my tubers will die as well? I am curious to know what the success rate is to propagate so I can brace myself for failure.
It's terrifying isn't it! People make it look so easy to propagate VSOH and here we are in struggle street >< My cousin on the other hand has been super successful propagating VSOH cuttings & cuttings with tubers too! I hope yours survives!
i was wondering if the small leaves would make it n this video answered my question
Hi Angelica, Hope you enjoyed the journey of these itty bitty leaves hehe
My propagation box which has vsoh has got roots and shoots now after like 4 weeks .. but the tiny roots are very hairy..I am really worried that it would make it!
I hope your VSOH cuttings in the prop box make it!
Hi would you care to sell a stand? I cannot find anyone who doesn't require an arm and a leg 😂.
