Leah is spectacular, and does not need to be naked. I freely admit, half the draw of your vids is reminiscing about my own youth, travelling with my son's mother in the seventies.
Can you image yourselves doing this in 40 years?

I carried 'bear spray' in Helsinki and the police stopped me and searched me...they found the spray and asked me what it was "I said bear repellant"..they relied "there's no bears in Helsinki!" I said "I know it's that good!". bum bum

Excellent video - good common sense advice and basic preparation is always welcome! I would add that networking with others and traveling in even a small group can be a big help. There is usually safety in numbers and you'll have a wider base of knowledge to draw from. It's not always possible, but it's one more thing to consider.

When I was younger I used to go camping in Algonquin Park (Canada) with just a tarp from a 40 foot trailer and very basic supplies. In case of wild animals or human threats I always kept handy an aerosol can that had a stream as opposed to a spray, and a bic lighter to use as a flame thrower. Not all cans are flammable but that combo will scare away most animals without the need to harm them and will make any threatening humans think twice. Separately they're legal everywhere but together they make a great self defense system. I only had to use it once back then when a curious black bear came looking for food as I was getting ready for bed. He left unharmed but unwilling to risk the flame.
I'm a locksmith among other things and something I always do is to keep spare keys with me. Get copies of all your keys made then cut off most of the key head, then drill a hole near the end so you can put them on a small key ring. I carry four keys like that and they take up very little room in my pocket and weigh next to nothing. If your key has a chip that kind of spare key will only unlock the door but often the lost keys are locked inside so the spare in that case wouldn't need to do anything but unlock the door.

for pepper spray, try places like autozone and lowes hardware. Look for the ones with a flip top instead of having to pull it out of a small sack you can keep your thumb rested under the flip top ready for any sudden attacks. I use this when walking around backways and taking pictures in graffiti spots

Nice tips! Thank you! Here are a few more: 1) Have more than one set of keys. If he carries his in his pocket, she should carry hers on a cord around her neck, etc. 2) Many people don't know the difference between bear spray and self-defense spray; bear spray is weak (1 to 2%) is used as a training method, and defense spray is usually 10 to 20%. Humans who have received bear spray before often keep attacking or fighting. 3) If you want to park in the lot of a 24-hr business, ask permission (and buy something).

Anytime Fitness (and other health clubs) provide 24/7 access, and that membership card provides the right to be parked in on the PRIVATE property anytime of day. Is a snoopy cop going to care if you are working out or napping in a vehicle. This is why a STEALTH ride is so important. Camper vans invite scrutiny. A cargo van or box truck do not draw attention.

good advice to shine a flashlight in the face of the police. you forgeo to mention a few key aspects : before you shine the light in the face of the police, it is absolutely essential to make sure the flashlight is near the door. Next, make sure you check the batteries often. (nothing more embarrassing than going to shine the light at the police and realizing the batteries are dead). and finally, the number one thing to remember when shining a light in the face of the police in the middle of the night while being homeless in america: , absolutely, under no circumstance, be black. Make sure, that all times you are white. Bonus tip: as you shine the light in the face of the cops, it's a great idea to utilize a foreign accent. A British accent is ideal, however, Australian, kiwi, or south African will do in a pinch. Good luck out there vanlifers, and remember to stay white if you want to be homeless in america and survive the night.

Glow plug will use 12 volts to heat up then drop its power consumption down to 4 volts direct current. You should have a low voltage heating element that you can use to heat your car van trailer boil water and cook your food. Well if it works any way?

You can easily make a homemade taser also. when you set it off it makes very loud clicking electric sounds and you can see arc of charge between the probes. that scares people. also they run off a 9v battery and are easy to disguise. for example i made one and put it in a deodorant container. you just pull off the top and boom, ready to electrocute some loser. since its custom made, it is also simple to adjust how much voltage you want to hit the guy with. ranges from "just saying hi" to "requires professional medical attention" .
Also it is possible to rig up other electric security, such as electrifying your car door handles so that if someone tries to open the door they instead get electrocuted. you can leave that on when you leave the vehicle.
two more things, take off the steering wheel when you leave the vehicle and add a kill switch code to your car so that only you, who knows the code, can start it. this can be done with some simple NAND logic circuits and some toggle switches. will make it impossible to start your car without you there.
I also carry a gun, if that's your thing.
happy travels, sorry for any spelling errors

There are a lot of pellet guns powered by CO2 cartridges that are hidden in the handle that look like real live honest-to-God bad ass guns. As a matter of fact there are some pellet rifles that are actually powerful enough to shoot 100 or more yards accurately and if you were a marksman... you could have dinner or a horror/ murder mystery.

You need to be careful camping "south of the border" especially in places "out of the way" and especially in northern Baja. Many friends of mine camping and surfing have been robbed in the middle of the night. The last friend was robbed at gun point, robbers took their clothes, vehicle with everything in it and left them naked on the bluff overlooking the ocean where they were camped. If you're camping at the beach in Mexico, make sure others are around, and it's a well-known spot. Just my take.

I’m not a nomad for many reasons, yes, bad things can happen in a traditional home too, but there’s more dangers when you’re out & alone, you’re more vulnerable. Is it safe? No, it’s not. My imagination runs wild, but here’s some scenarios to think about, ladies:
    1. You’re in the middle of nowhere, alone, you keep hearing things, then you see several ppl hanging around, what do you do?? There’s no cell reception. You can’t drive off since they’ve blocked You in.
    2. Your RV breaks down, what do you do? And since there’s no cell reception, you can’t call for help, what do you do?
    3. Your tires have been slashed while you were sleeping in the middle of the night, what do you do?
    4. You meet some nice people, but while you were hiking they broke into your RV, stealing your food, weapons & anything else of value. What do you do? Call the cops?? They can’t help since you dont have the thieves names or description of their get away vehicle.
    5. You have a flat tire, a man offers to help you, next thing you know, he’s raped & beat you, but you’re still alive, he’s fled the scene. You’re camping in the National Forest, earlier you saw other campers nearby, but you can’t move due to your injuries, so what do you do?
    6. Your bathroom all of a sudden overflows, you’re flooded out. What do you do?
In closing, It just seems a lot more dangerous, I don’t trust strangers. Many nomads talk about going with your gut feeling, that’s fine, but what if it’s too late for that?? Put men’s shoes outside, carry a weapon or bear spray, have a bat & knife handy, what good are all these tactics if the man or group of people over power you? So please folks, use common sense, stay out of harms way! I’m not afraid, but I do use common sense, I don’t invite strangers into my home, I’m very cautious because you never know the inner heart or intentions of that stranger. Peace & safety to all the nomads, especially the women - God bless you all

I live in Alaska, now and have driven here from Florida. I am originally from Bronx, NY. Most NE US States from Maryland to Maine have ridiculous gun laws and you could find yourself in trouble if you have a gun. Bear and pepper spray require you to be much closer to your attacker than is safe and it is possible for your attacker to turn the tables on you, with you ending up with mace in your eyes. I carry a .357 magnum pistol or shotgun when out in the woods- most here carry a .44 magnum pistol when they are backpacking. You can carry a rifle and or shotgun with you throughout US and Canada in most cases as your self defense. I also suggest a car alarm since no one will want to draw attention to themselves. As for criminals potentially working in groups, I agree with keeping your eyes wide open and have your head on a swivel. I also study Krav Maga and all who travel should know this as you are the self defense and you are always with you. You will learn not only how to end bad situations, with human predators and escape alive, but also how to avoid the possible situation in the first place.

on the Volkswagen van make sure the door on the engine compartment locks as if the perp's can access the engine compartment thay can pull your plug or coil wire and disable you from starting the vehicle. forget the pepper spray get a stun gun and press it up against thier temple. brutal you say, well if you get accosted in the wilderness where there is no one around to help then they mean to do you bodily harm. and they might be a serial killer. so stay safe stay sharp and get a good self defense weapon.

Waving around a machete with no real intention/ability to use it.....not a good idea. I know you probably just keep one around as a tool. Think sticks. Spend a little time to learn how to use them (escrima) interesting, fun and useful.

    Just curious about this...
So the cops do show up knocking on your van time by time, do you get fines now and then for camping? And are these fines reasonable, compared to your earnings and compared to the costs you get when living in a house?

    • @KombiLife

Every other country ever: "For defense, keep your keys handy so you can drive away. Have a light to shine in their eyes. We have bear spray that definitely will ONLY inhibit the bad-guy's ability to see and not mine; yes, even in a van (Sarcasm of course because that's asinine.) Make sure you keep everything is locked, be completely aware of everything everywhere at all times. Don't get distracted."Americans: "Glock 35 with TLR1 make bad-guy's head pop."PS: I am definitely the latter, rather the former XD
