    The fact that he did a lot of the drumming in Whiplash is insane in itself. Miles deserves more recognition for his performance because he was incredible. I've never felt so much tension and anxiety from just watching a teacher and student go at it. And the last 10 minutes or so in the film was nuts. Such a great movie. I hope Miles continues picking more roles like Whiplash and The Spectacular Now. His filmography isn't perfect but he's got a lot of talent.

    • @CRodsnare
      @CRodsnare 9 ปีที่แล้ว +41

      None of his drumming was truly him. It's like the movie "drumline" when Nick cannons face isn't ever shown with his hands playing what you hear. Although he might have played one or two of the scenes genuinely, most of it was edited from another drummers' playing. I'm a very experienced drummer myself. That's why I watched this film

    • @TheMostBoringGuy
      @TheMostBoringGuy 9 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      You can tell he's not playing for most of it because where you will hear a cymbal or drum you won't see him hit that object. Like the noise came from somewhere but he didn't make it. Obviously a lot of editing was done and someone played over what was filmed.

    As a drummer, I have a few things to say... The first is to get it out of the way: never underestimate movie magic. Secondly, Miles is spot-on here where jazz is an entirely different beast and learning it isn't easy. Lastly, whether it was intentional or not, his right hand ended up holding and playing the sticks much like Buddy Rich did: using his two primary fingers to move the stick, as opposed to all 4 fingers.

    He was "self-taught" to play simple rock and roll drums. He took hours of lessons to learn many of the jazz techniques 99% of rock drummers don't use. It was him playing the majority of the drumming in the movie. However with the magic of editing (There is a reason this movie is up for best editing in the Oscars) it sounded as if he was playing continuously when in fact he only played in small parts which were edited together to make it seem like it was shot in one take.

      ***** I absolutely believe his approach works. I also recently started playing billiards on a league. My team's captain takes it WAY too serious and, as a result, I'm constantly practicing in an effort to a) avoid ridicule and b) one day shut him up by running the table on him lol. I think you need something or someone real to represent the challenge you wish to overcome. Otherwise, you're running in a race with no checkpoints in sight.

      Ok - but if your captain pressed your head into the table and whipped you fifteen times on the back of the head with a bag of pool balls every time you missed, is that taking it too far?
      It seems like your captain isn't that bad - he wants to win, and makes it absolutely clear to you in no uncertain terms. He's the Sir Alex Ferguson of billiard!.

      Shawn Hilliard
      How could you forget that?!
      We're talking about a change in teaching techniques over the last few decades.
      My parents would get the belt for getting a question wrong. And they are nowhere near as smart as me or any of my sisters! So it didn't work on them (I need to tell them how to work a computer every single fucking year when I visit - as well as clean their computer of all the malware they've downloaded!).
      I am a music tutor myself, and I have never raised my voice to a student in 18 years. Because I know that my job is to support them in times of frustration and help them.
      If they're not getting it, it's my fault as a teacher for not coming up with a way to identify the problem that they're having trouble understanding. I always win in the end - no face slaps required!
      You would have won anyway - just by quietly pursuing your craft of beating everyone else at pool. You didn't need to get belted by this idiot.
      Terrence's approach is wrong - it is proved to be wrong in modern sports, where records are broken through good science, individual willpower, and - yes - very motivational coaching (not involving bruises or scars at any stage).
      I am a self-taught professional jazz trumpeter. I didn't need Terrence Fletcher to give me his version of advice - I go through much worse in my head before I do a solo...

  • @david_janes
    @david_janes 9 ปีที่แล้ว +42

    when they say he plays 90% or something of the drum tracks, that doesn't mean at all that he's playing as you see him on the footage, all of the sounds were pre-recorded, think of it as a music video, but he is playing it.

    • @pietzsche
      @pietzsche 8 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      +David Janeš He definitely isn't. Not only is he not playing, from looking at his technique, he couldn't. It's funny that he mentions grip here, every drummer who sees this film straight away thinks 'wtf's up with his grip?'

    • @david_janes
      @david_janes 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      grip is less important if you know what you're doing

    • @pietzsche
      @pietzsche 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +David Janeš are you kidding? it's not possible to play at those speeds without perfect technique, only his index fingers are on the sticks half the time, no drummer in history could do that.

    I think Miles played drums in the movie the same way Sal Mineo did in the Gene Krupa story. It was him being filmed, but the actual playing for most of the movie had to be someone else. Otherwise, he would be recognized as one of the foremost jazz drummers of our time.

I am no true movie buff nor am I a skilled musician, but I do appreciate the craftsmanship of a good film and I know me some good jazz. This film, for lack of a better way of putting it, BLEW ME THE FUCK AWAY. Screenplay, editing, directing, cinematography, the acting, the music. This film is an all around masterpiece. BRAVO I don't care if I'm biased because play the drums and love jazz music this film is simply a work of art.

    I love the roles he plays, in all his movies. He plays a real character, someone you could relate to. The spectacular now he played this cocky teen that goes through denial in the future. Not wanting to grow up. And I could go on about his other movies but whiplash is my definitely my favourite. Andrew brings the movie to life by his realness, by showing what dedication is. By showing what it's like to spend hours on something and have it crumble down. And the good looks and amazing personality is just a bonus of Miles 😏

Honestly, do you wake up every 15 minutes to check at night, too?

When I'm at home I can comfortably watch a film and check my phone (I work for a company where I get emails CONSTANTLY on my workphone and need to respond no matter what time of day, but I forgot about it during this film). I don't even have fb, twitter or instagram. So here's a suggestion, don't make any more assumptions about me you dickhead.
