In this short video I go over how to choose the correct carpet pad when choosing carpet to be installed in your home.
For most homes I recommend 7/16 inch 8 pound padding
with or without a moisture barrier.
If the carpet is a low pile berber or loop pile carpet I recommend a 3/8 inch 8 pound padding.
For rentals where padding will be replaced in less than 5 years, I recommend 7/16 inch 5 or 6 pound padding.

Sometimes that 1/2 inch is to much height an actually impedes the carpet from hooking on the tack strip..especially in winter when the carpet gets stiff from the cold

Our budget is 4.00 a sq yd for the carpet. We're going through Flooring America if that's of any help??
Our contractor recommended we not use padding in our basement we live in the Midwest I can’t stand it.. he says basements tend to leak
Thankful to have found this. We are doing several room's in our home. I'm looking at the carpet sample's now. Think we've decided on that part but, want to do the right thing for the padding underneath it! We're going with a 20yr Resista Soft Style Polyester. We want it to last as well as feel nice and cushy and we take good care of our thing's so what do you think??
The padding will definitely help the carpet last longer. I never recommend polyester but hopefully it will last for you!
@@justsaygold Wait then! What DO you recommend?! I have sample's right here! OMG! I don't want to make the wrong choice, it's an expensive, one time project!!!! HELP!!!! We're in our mid 50's and finally able to replace our carpet so, any advice will be greatly appreciated!

Polyester is okay but will wear out fast in the areas where you walk a lot. I always recommend Nylon carpet.

What padding do you recommend for stairs? Should I get 4/6 lbs. 3/8 or 7/16? I plan to buy a low pile carpet.
I would recommend a 7 or 8 pound 3/8 pad for your steps. Definitely not a 4 pound, 6 pound is okay but if you want the carpet to last longer since stairs are usually high traffic areas I would go with 7 or 8 pound pad.
why do you think moisture barrier is not that important? I am in market for new carpet and I have kids, home depot recommended me lifeproof padding or at the very least a padding with moisture barrier
I am helping my folks replace their carpet. We are going with, “Find your comfort ii, Anso/Nylon carpet.” Is this a good carpet? Especially for heavy traffic area and what is the best padding for this? Should we get the moister barrier or spill proof padding?
Anso Nylon is one of my favorite carpets, I have it in my living room area and it always cleans up like new. If you have pets then I would go ahead and get the moisture barrier padding.

When exactly would you use a half inch? In the video you saif you would tell what kind of carpet goes with each. Im looking for a lot of cusion, specifucally in the bedroom. I want my feet to sink in with esch step barefoot
3/8 inch pad is mostly for low pile carpet like loop pile and berber, 7/16 inch is most common for most residential carpet and 1/2 inch is kind of for what you're looking for. The only problem with 1/2 inch pad is the carpet can develop wrinkles easier.

I'd always go with 8 pound pad, with berber or short pile carpet I'd go with 3/8 inch padding.
