Coincidentally, this has been on my watchlist for a while 👀 I'm new to painting myself and the versatility of watercolor captivated me from the start. (My particular favourites have been Winsor and Newton) I also wanted to get some good gouaches and Shin Han caught my eye. As you said, it was the vibrancy that caught my eye as well. These are really quite nice for their low price. To help avoid confusion - the company ShinHan Professional offers a paint line called "PASS" which is a watercolor-gouache hybrid to help more smoothy transition from opaque to transparent washes with quick dispersion/flow in wet. The ones you show here are just Designers Gouache (not Pass), which are made with a gouache formula (more pigment load, coarser particles, less flow additives and a matte agent or binder additive - sometimes dextrin, not the super glossy gum arabic formula of watercolor). All paints, watercolor, gouache, acrylic or oil have opaque or transparent colors as this is a pigment trait. For instance Yellow Ochre or English Red = often opaque, where as quins and phthalos = often transparent. Poor quality gouache takes the choice away from the artist by adding chalk or white filler to make them all opaque, where as pro and designer brands will let you mix them yourself. Happy painting :)

As I've mentioned within the video, I'm a watercolourist and have never used gouache, so to read your words here really helps me understand this medium. I must admit though, I do like it even though as you said these paints may not give me the full experience unless I compare these to a higher quality product. But, as a non-gouache painter, I got on with these really well. I suppose after using watercolours for over 40 years, when I have demonstrated lower quality paints there is a massive difference between the colours, pigments and make up of the paints. I love working with gouache, I usually start with a watery layer and then build on those layers with a creamy consistency, I have found if used straight from the tube you get a lot of drag, but it depends on the effect(s) that you want. I would not use expensive, or my best water colour brushes as gouache can be harsher on the brush than watercolour. You do have to watch for light fastness though as they can fade in direct sunlight. Not sure if this is the case with this brand as I have not used them. Painting with gouache is great fun, it's only the spelling of it that drives me nuts. I hope you enjoy them. I'm just getting into watercolor. Would you say this is just a thicker watercolor? Because it seems you can water it down and use it just like water color OR use it thicker and it's almost like acrylic.
Hi, from what I understand gouache has a much higher concentrated pigment which can be nearly opaque, depending on how much water you use of course. As mentioned in this video, this is pretty new to me as well, so like you, it will be a bit of a learning curve. :-)
can you please do a swatch with all the colors? ive been eyeing this but im still on the fence. im curious to see if they are streaky when not watered down. i love gouache and im in the process of finding the best one for me.

Hm ... these look like very high quality gouache paints. More like semi opaque watercolours than gouache. I used to work with gouache in my student days but never with such vibrant and semi opaque colours so I wouldn't say that I can imagine how these ones will perform on a painting. In fact I've abandoned gouache because the colours couldn't give me the super realistic results that I can get from watercolours. Of course I'm talking about the gouache colours that I used to use decades ago, mostly Talens Rembrandt ones. But these look completely different. Anyway...if you intent to use them to paint something, keep in mind that the regular gouache paints tend to reactivate very easy on the paper so you have to have very "light hand" when you work in multiple layers, they are opaque and mat so they are very easy to scan and that you don't have to preserve any highlights. You can add them with white colour at the end. But I wouldn't say that I can tell if the above apply to these colours too. ( they are a mystery to me!! )

James Gurney told me that gouache doesn't really go opaque until you add white to it. He has a great TH-cam channel and a web site. He paints with Watercolor, gouache and casein.
That's a general simplification to help curb the expectation of gouache often being referred to as "opaque watercolor". It's true, many of the bargain/student gouaches will force all colors to be opaque by adding low quality white pigments like pw18 chalk, but also fillers like corn starch and cheaper binders with a cloudy matte finish like dextrin (potato starch). In any type of paint (watercolor, gouache, acrylic or oil) all have opaque or transparent colors (the brand color chart will usually show a solid square icon for colors with that pigment trait). For instance Yellow Ochre or English Red = often opaque, where as quins and phthalos = often transparent. Poor quality gouache takes the choice away from the artist by adding chalk or white filler to make them all opaque, where as pro and designer brands will let you mix them yourself. I love working with gouache, I usually start with a watery layer and then build on those layers with a creamy consistency, I have found if used straight from the tube you get a lot of drag, but it depends on the effect(s) that you want.
