South Africa sends 25,000 soldiers to stop looting | DW News

  • Shocking images of smashed windows, destroyed metal security doors and stores stripped of anything worth stealing have gripped South Africa. Uniformed police officers have stood by as looters made off with boxes of stolen goods, and small store owners were left picking through the wreckage of their businesses. Videos of people showing off looted items have streamed alongside shots of the army patrolling the streets.
Numbers give only an indicator of the damage to South Africa over the last few days. Over 70 dead, more than 1,200 arrested for looting and at least 200 shopping malls across the Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal provinces ransacked. Those provinces include the major cities of Pretoria, Johannesburg and Durban.
The full economic cost of the unrest is yet to be counted, but eThekwini Mayor Mxolisi Kaunda in KwaZulu-Natal told reporters more than 15 billion rand (about $1 billion/€875 million) worth of property and equipment had been damaged, affecting 40,000 businesses. COVID-19 vaccine centers were forced to close in affected areas, and clinics and pharmacies were not spared in the looting either.

I’m in South Africa in a city hit hard by the protests in a lower-middle suburb, there are no cops or soldiers anywhere to be seen. The only form of protection we have hereis the like 30 people from the neighborhood watch group standing by the entrance into our neighborhood. It’s utter chaos.

Poland however is one country that has turned it around and I would argue that is because it is still a country tied together by cultural, linguistic and ethnic solidarity. Those leaders after 94 were just riding a wave of good infrastructure left to them and disillusioned overseas investors. However when the disillusioned investors started to see what really goes on they started to disappear, and our infrastructure started crumble due to lack of money, and a lot of incompetent's people getting jobs they didn't deserve because of racist employment laws meaning a lot of wealth sits with people who didn't earn it through hard work, discipline or whatever. Just connections, and they don't use that wealth to create more jobs , just buy big fancy cars and send the money overseas. And youth unemployment sits at 64%, why? Because they just took all the old jobs and didn't create new ones.

i dont think so, who will riot? Europe has excellent welfare and social security, also there is no large population in europe that was oppressed by europeans in the past, so there is no base for raceriots like in the US. But please explain what you think is going to happen, i might have missed something.

Are _most_ rioters really that loyal to Zuma, or is this simply opportunism by an impoverished, desperate, and angry people?

It's beyond poverty now. Most looters are using it as an opportunity for criminality. The poor have to walk many kilometres to reach the stores and many kilometres back to their homes with whatever they managed to gather. A lot of the looters have cars and are stealing luxury goods.

Bad karma recipients can then dispense karma on each other en masse. If it is not karma, then it is just people being how people are when they gt swept up in masses - pathetic.

@@thatothobejane4674 Agreed. Very experienced looters expanding from tenders to shops. It was a looting bubble on the Loot Exchange...
And this time the poor are not shafted by Apartheid, but by their bretheren. And one can walk the chain up to government, apartheid and other things. But someones instigated and someones agreed, fell for it or abused it. That bit is on each individual. I trust everyone will learn something, because, next week, when there is no food or medicine, or petrol, the people will rember who rocked up at home last week with a 'new fridge, microwave and clothes'.

To all my educated brothers and sisters in South Africa. The international community feels your heartache and pain during this trying time. Similar to certain other African countries, we could see the direction South Africa was heading in and expected the degradation to take years - from what the world has just witnessed in less than a week - it's not going to take that long. It was a difficult decision to leave such a beautiful country when we did but we were regarded as second class citizens in a country our forefathers helped to build. I urge you, if at all possible, use your skills to get you and your families out of Africa as soon as you can - don't let yourself or your family members become victims of murder, rape or robbery. There are countries that could use your skills. I know it's easier said than done, but if COVID restrictions ease and you can - GET OUT WHILE YOU CAN - it's not easy, but you can build a new, safer life for your family in another country.
