Hello, greetings from Quebec, Canada. I have an 041AV that sat for probably over 20 years. Last summer I changed out the carburetor and fuel lines, spark plug, gave it a good cleaning and it fired up real good. After sitting for a week or 2 it was not so easy. I noticed there is some residue in the gas tank. Any suggestions on how to clean that out? It is also very hard to pull start, it would take me 15-20 pulls to start it. Is there a way to lubricate the crank case? I plan on giving it another cleanup this spring before putting into use. Let me know your thoughts, cheers!

      Good morning William.
      Greetings From the UK 😃
I absolutely agree. They are such a powerful long stroke engine.
I own 6 versions of this model and 4 of the 051, her larger sister.
      Kind regards
      Rob

How would it compare to a cs60s ❤

      Greetings from Wales 👍😁
The Stihl 041 outperforms the CS60S comfortably.
Both saws are beautifully built but the longer stroke 041 has more torque and even with the blade buried in the wood continues to cut smoothly and progressively...a true vintage professional chainsaw with adjustable oiler and very robust
      Kind regards
      Rob 🙂🌲🪵🔥

Fantastic saw i have the non av with the stand up letters more of a redish top an av and a couple FB and only one super, I have yet to try one as i have only had interest in saws less than a year, now it's more of an addiction, I like different manufactures so i have been gaining different saws, today a Jonsereds 2171w, yesterday a JohnDeere 66SV (twin cylinder model) a homelite super xl 1050 arrived in the mail today and last week a Stihl 090 non av model, to many more to mention but i really like the "more metal" saws then the plastic ones, you have some of the most amazing videos props to you Mr. Rob

I received for my 12th birthday a mint Stihl 041 with a full wrap handlebar that was pre AV. It really demonstrated why the AV model came to be. I have my 041AV Super as my favourite. Difficult to find cylinders for the Super now. Eventually cut the head off a Super cylinder to allow replating since no one wanted to plate a blind cylinder. It was a lot of work making the split sleeve to spin the cylinder in a lathe but it worked great. Not a screamer but a very interesting saw to try and get a little extra oomph out of. An expansion chamber really helps but isn't for everyone. I had plenty of time and growing up in the bush you either did it yourself or ordered it from the Sears catalogue. Unfortunately their chainsaw high performance section didn't last long. One interesting thing to do is to wet sand the old paint and buff it to a high shine. They end up looking great even if a few spots go through to the aluminum. A clear coat over the wet sanded part stops the oxidation. Porting helps quite a bit but you need to be careful not to go for just bigger. The Super model is worth it if you can find one. Loctite everything and replace all of the seals if they're running off and on. Setting the deck height offers a kick in compression if you find a better ring and it seals properly with the cylinder. Better stop talking about 041's now. Good luck with yours.

I'm using one now. My second one. I took my 044 to ace for repair and they screwed up the carburetor so I'm back to the good old o41. Mine seems to rev higher than that. Maybe touch that high speedscrew just a bit on yours. Mine doesn't have that miss at full throttle. Its not a 5.2 hp 044 but it handles a 20 inch bae fine in ash hardwood and I have put my 36 inch bar on it a few times to cut off logs for my lumber mill or drop a really large tree.

Hi, I have an 041AV that is leaking bar oil. If you look at the saw from the front, just to the right of the bar is a mechanism of some sort held in place with a snap ring and a hole right above it. That is where it is leaking. What is it and how can you fix it? Thanks

Hi Christopher.. Greetings from the UK.
Sorry I missed this message earlier.
That is the oil pump assembly.
If it is leaking from there it probably means either the sealing O-ring is damaged or missing or the main rubber sealing ring for the pump.
They are still readily available and the O-ring size is 6x1.5.
      Kind regards
      Rob :-)

Hi rob , I think I've said before that I have an 041av and yes they have immense compression. I need to drain the bar oil when not in use , because it leaks in to the crank case when stopped . If I forget to and try to start it , it kicks back enough to almost break my knuckles lol . Love the saw though, it has so much power.

      Good morning Kelvin 😃
I wonder how common the problem of the chain oil leaking in to crankcase is ?
I have 6 of the 041's and I have not come across it before.
Have you previously had the engine apart and split the crankcase?
So powerful as you say.. beautiful long stroke engine.
      Kind regards
      Rob 😃

@@stridebaad1219 hi rob, no I was given the saw by a friend who in turn was given it with a problem lol . I've not had the chance to split her yet too see what's on . I know it's my laziness but it's not a problem simply draining the oil when not in use .
