Nothing can capture the encapsulated feeling that Yi Yi portrays in the modern world of life, the film opens with a marriage ceremony and ends with a funeral. Between those moments are the small clips of unchronological aspects of life. Discovering love, enjoying blissful innocence and peace with the ones you love, fearing a slow death as the days pass by, and experiencing how difficult but valuable it is to live. Rest in peace Edward Yang.
The scene with the longshot held steady through the entire conversation of teens beneath the overpass as the traffic light changes colour has stayed with me for almost three decades.
@@veralynn8334 I’m not the person you asked, but I love *A Brighter Summer Day* even more than I love *Yi Yi* (of course, both are great movies, regardless). In fact, *A Brighter Summer Day* is my #3 favourite film of all time, just behind *Her* at #1 and *Portrait of a Lady on Fire* at #2.
@@veralynn8334 I just saw _A Brighter Summer Day_ last night... absolutely amazing! I don't wanna build it up for you too much but, _man(!!!),_ 🤦♂️ it was great. I'd probably put it over _Yi Yi_ as well, but I'm partial to crime films - especially with political and historical aspects. My first two experiences with Edward Yang were this last week, and they were both unforgettable.
As beautiful as it is still, this one kinda shows that there is a type of beauty beyond the visual realm, that's why it is one of the greatest films ever made, you have to experience the film itself to grasp its real beauty.
I watched it for the first time just a few nights back... thing is, I was so wrapped up in the story, I didn't realize just how beautiful some of those shots are! Don't get me wrong - I gasped out loud several times, "OMG!", at the beauty of a particular shot, but the entire thing is framed so incredibly, it brings tears to my eyes seeing a montage like this.
One of the all time great movies. For as slow and methodical as it is, I can't really think of anything that is as rewarding to finish as this masterwork.
Thank you for doing this! Edward Yang's direction is always resplendent, but his intention was to capture the modern and soullessness of contemporary Taiwan, and yet he always captures the beauty of humanity in contrast.
I recently bought this film on blu-ray from the Criterion Collection. I did not know about this film until I saw this video on this channel. I was blown away by the cinematography and the simplicity of the movie. I watched the film....and fell in love with it. It's so intimate and moving. Officially one of my all time favorite films of all time. Thank you, Edward Yang.
The second I hear that score I begin to tear up. I return to this film every year. The sight of that wedding with the family gathered together for a photo always eases me in. There isn’t a familial drama that matches this scope or emotional resonance.
In my 40 years I had never really felt that any film that I've watched was definitively the best movie ever made until I saw Yi Yi then felt the same way shortly after when I watched A Brighter Summers Day.
Perfect timing! It just so happens I finally watched _Yi Yi_ for the first time several nights ago... it's just as incredible as I heard it was! I can't wait to watch more from the director. Apart from the cinematography and the writing, the performances were all absolutely _pitch_ perfect!
Merci pour ce montage qui rend bien hommage à ce chef d'oeuvre. Vu 3-4 fois Yi Yi en salles, revu plusieurs fois depuis, je pourrais le revoir encore et encore, sans fin...
I always thought this movie was just magical and heartbreaking all at the same time. Edward Yang's style is absolutely beautiful but somber. Edward Yang was a legend and he left this planet too soon 😭😭
You did the film absolutely justice, thank you so much for putting your effort into this beautiful video. No one captures a city through the medium of film better than Edward Yang (Taipei). ‘Yi Yi’ was actually the first film I ever saw on a Criterion disc funnily enough too.
🤩Yi Yi🤩 The last Movie of Edward Yang. I was so impressed when I discovered those films in 2021: "Yi Yi" by Edward Yang and "Days of Being Wild" of Wong Kar Wai. I hope theree will be availabled, one day, on Blu-Ray or DvD in France.
Yi Yi is such a masterpiece. I would love to explore other Taiwanese or East Asia cinema. And I'm begging you to create The Beauty of Frantz (2017) and Cold War (2018).
I hope one day you'll do The Beauty Of Larry Clark :) I know he is more a photographer than a produceur but because of that his cinema is like noone else.
Yes, the film looked good. But at the end, I asked myself: what was the point? What was the meaning of the story? I often have trouble answering these questions after watching a 90's/early 2000's movie from Taiwan. Maybe someone can help.
I love your videos. Do you have to get permission to use film footage for your videos? I was going to do a video essay but was unsure how to use or get footage.

Simply one of the greatest films ever made. So personal, honest and beautiful
It is one of the most beautiful films I have ever watched.
This movie and especially A Brighter Summer Day are two of my favorite movies of all time.
I always wanted to see A Brighter Summer Day, its even better than this?

1:34 definitely the best shot in the movie for me. So subtle but also impactful

Yang's own _A Brighter Summer Day_ has a similar rewarding finish. Two masterworks!

This film is a perfect example of how set design plays a ginormous part in cinematography
