    The issue with Textedit and Iconedit was found - it is a problem with the new "layout.gadget" file. When replaced with the 3.2.1 version, she works full speed again! Does this 100% solve the issue? We shall see, but for now it seems to work really well. I am just putting up a video that goes over the solution now.

    Regarding building software for 68000 vs 68020+. We generally just build for plain 68000. The places where you would notice a difference are rare. The thing is the machine code is 99% the same no matter what you build for. So you may only gain 1% speed up. That is so little that it is not worth the trouble. Our focus instead goes into the overhauls which can in some situation give 10% or more speedup for all CPUs. Now there are a few places where compiling for 68020 specifically will give you great speedups but those places are more in programs that do number crunching, and not in the OS itself. And say the speedup from changing your physical cpu from 68000 to 68020 is 100%- would your really notice if say your startup time is 1% better than that.. The first rule of optimizing is to spend the effort where you get most out of it.

    • @10MARC
      @10MARC  ปีที่แล้ว +5

      That's awesome, Camilla! When Personal Paint released it's "new" version a few years ago, the guy compiled a bunch of the code for the 68010, which made the software not work at all on a 68000. Honestly, he did not want to fix it since he already got paid as a subcontractor... Kinda pissed me off. Eventually he did recompile it to work on a 68000.

    • @NeoMK27
      @NeoMK27 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello Camilla. I understand what you are saying, but not at the expense of compatibility with the lowest common denominator architecture - in comparison to the previous version. Surely the goal is to make things sing on a 68000 system where one version of the OS has to fit all?

    • @cboemannc
      @cboemannc ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@NeoMK27 I believe that is what I said. We see no reason for any specialized version.

    • @10MARC
      @10MARC  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@NeoMK27 I think the OS itself should remain compatible with 68000 CPU's. I totally get the need for more than a few MB of RAM to run it.
      I also would support software that is coded for just 68020 and above if it brought new features to the table. That should be available as a separate option of course.

    One particular point of contention when I bought 3.2, is the retailer stuck the serial on a loose piece of paper between the case and plastic wrap, which I obviously lost, and only realized some time later I needed by the time 3.2.1 rolled around. Since I'm not on principle going to buy it again, I'm now doomed to ask friends for a copy of the updates since Hyperion doesn't recognize me as a legitimate owner.
    I really hope the next time physical copies are made (3.3?), more effort is made to put the registration # on the cd itself, or at least actually printed on the liner sleeve.

    • @10MARC
      @10MARC  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If it is a good retailer they will help you out with that registration number. If not, maybe Hyperion can help (good luck with that!)

      This ^ exactly happened to me with the CD the first week it was out. Why they printed it on a throwaway wrapper in back out of sight I’ll never know.

    I always get something out of your how to detailed vids- this time, after 2 years, i thought i had lost my os3.2 registration number (threw away the darn sticker on the wrapper without knowing!) but found it on the webstore purchase history and entered it, voila! got my 3.2.2 update better late than never.

    • @10MARC

      You will find that bug if you leave the file in the and run another upgrade, like from 3.2 to 3.2.1 to 3.2.2 - It won't overwrite the startup-sequence backup file, so if you had made changes, then you lost them

    • @10MARC

      Can you read the CF cards? You have to have the CF software and FAT drivers to do that. Once you have it, you can certainly format a card as long as it is 4GB or below. It will have an issue above that.
      Best bet is to format the CF card on a Windows machine using FAT ort FAT32 and see if the Amiga reads it.
      If you need the CF software for the Amiga, and can point you where to download it on Aminet.

The drivers are all installed, CF0 in Dosdrivers, flashcarddevice in Libs etc. I formatted them in Windows with Fat32 and my A1200 also shows them and I can also write to them. Not a big deal I ordered more ROM's which can be returned it they prove to be NFG so I will go through all of them when they come in. I will burn ROM's for All my Amiga's. I use my burner at work from time to time and I do have a big project to backup the FW on my old temp controllers so it will come in handy I just have to check the ROM's those old controllers used as I may have them here already but for that purpose I just need to read and save the ROM Files.

      @@77slevins_video_channel I use a CQ-4X4 with an ADP-054 adaptor board to program 27C400 EPROMS and others as well. I also have all the adaptor boards that was made for it at the time I purchased the unit. Sourcing EPROM's is a PITA as many are just recycled so you can buy a bunch and have some fail. You will need a UV Eraser Box to erase the EPROMs and because sometimes you may experience read/write/verify failures. Sometimes you get really lucky and have no issues other times not so much. Unfortunately, most sellers are found in China but even the stuff you find in your own country comes out of China. Just make sure you can return stuff and avoid sellers who do not accept returns and even then, it's a pain. Once you have a confirmed working set your good to go for the long haul unless you do not want to erase an EPROM then you need more. Even getting programmed EPROMs from sellers is not a guaranty you're getting good ones which is why I started burning my own.

    There might be so many ways to get 3.2 onto an Amiga. But I think the assumption is you already have something working. I have an early A600 with original kickstart of 37.299. So I don't think I can use the PCMCIA slot or a hard disk without additional drivers. I bought a 3.1 ROM chip, but it still doesn't see the CF card on the IDE port. Bought an Amiga pre-formatted CF card, but my Mac doesn't even let it be accessed saying it is unsupported. I don't have a Windows machine, so no WinUAE as that isn't supported on a Mac. From this perspective it seems even installing WB and booting from a hard disk is a real challenge. Let alone trying to get 3.2 installed. I don't have a Gotek and I only have WB 2.0 on floppy, but no install disks. I have all the disks that came with the A600 and have owned it from new since 1992. I'd love to get 3.2 on there. But a little stumped at how to proceed.

    • @10MARC
      @10MARC  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You have a few options. The easiest is getting your AmigaOS 3.2 files on your CF card in the PCMCIA adapter - no, it does not work out of the box. You need the FAT95 drivers and the cfd133.lha drivers from aminet.
      Mac run FS-UAE 100% fine and can be used to create images fairly easily.
      If that CD card is already formatted with an OS for the Amiga, then one of the many IDE to CF adapters will do the trick nicely. If you want, email me douglas(at)dctechaz(dot)com and I can get you going in the right direction.

      The 3.1 kickstart should absolutely recognize (and be able to boot once it is installed) the CF card, else there might be hardware problems.
