I personally think Natsu is the protagonist in the story that we are seeing from Lucy's pov. You could say Lucy is the storyteller/narrator of the story..

In the extras to Fairy Tail Volume 2 he also said "My last main character was called Haru (spring) so this one is summer" Edit.: ((Natsu means Summer. Also in Eden's Zero (his newer work) the protag is called Shiki (Four Seasons))
