The apple is responsible for giving the humans free will (knowing good and bad), and because our boy Adam refused to take the apple, he never got the ,,forbidden knowledge" that the humans got. While Adam has No idea where that line is, so he has no other choice but to stick to his own view of what he is doing as nothing bad.
