I just attempted my first glue bed dye. I followed as best I could with your process. In the video, your colors are so vivid, and solid. Very opaque and you can clearly see each color. I mixed my pro chem with 100% acetone. My results are frustratingly different. I could barely see the colors in the glue bed, almost like I mixed them thin. So I mixed quite a bit more in each of the tiny jars, I let them settle for about 2 minutes, and when I could see that the excess dye was settling to the bottom, I went back to applying it to the bed, but it seemed like no matter how much I added, I never even got close to the clarity that you have here. It was hard to even try to then blend it in the bed, and push it around, because the colors could not be seen as easily as yours are. I'm positive I've got plenty of pro chem in the tiny jars, I'm positive I am using the correct acetone, and glue... about the only thing I can think of that's different is you're using a white container for your bed, mine is clear. I picked mine up because it was literally 5$ at hobby lobby, and it's a 1" deep tray on it's own lazy suzan. Comes in pretty handy for spinning the angles so I can see the bed from another angle. I laid a white disc in it about a half hour ago, so I'll report back tomorrow night. I hope it turns out halfway decent, but I'm not expecting perfection. It's my first time. I just wish I could see my colors as vividly as we see them in your video. Thank you.
Bad Azz Dye Jobs! Not sure which video it was but you mentioned watering down your glue bed. Is that so you can manipulate / move the acetone dye around better? How much do you dilute it? Mix ratio? Do you mix worm dye with acetone or lotion for lotion dyes or apply it straight? Thanks
Totally. You would wanna hot dip that bad boy for the best results. Stamps are not normally effected by dye, so you won’t need to cover up the stamp. This is what I’ve read. Warm up some dye and water in a pan and warm it up to roughly 180-190 degrees. Then float the disc in that for 5-10 minutes or until you are happy with the results.
I use prochem dyes mainly, but I’ll use idye poly as well as worm dip. I use about 1/4 tablespoon dye to 1oz acetone. Here are some links: prochemicalanddye.net/disc-golf-disc-dyes.html www.ispikeit.com/product/150/dip-n-glo-unscented www.dickblick.com/products/jacquard-idye-for-polyesternylon/
Honestly, I torched the bed too much and it created a film on top of the glue it seems. The dye was resting on top instead of spreading like it should. That’s why I had to stir the dye drops for them to spread more.
Great Job, love the disc. Just a quick question. When you are dying the disc border and underneath, are you just using your dye mixed with poly? Looks like you are just painting it on til it is the shade you want. Do you have to let that sit for a period of time as well?
I’m using spike it lure dye for the spin dye. It’s more vibrant then my acetone mixtures. I like to let it sit for a day before I wash the discs after the spin dye.
Discraft Z plastic is quite dyeable, but grey discs tend to mute/darken the colors you use. Also, I dont remember which ones, but dyers use very specific clear glues as some of them sink the dye, ruining the process. Otherwise, its a fun activity.
Do you mix your dye with acetone? If so what ratio do you use? Red and blue seemed to mix almost instantly with the acetone but all the other colors I tried did not mix with the acetone very well.
I use roughly 1/4 tablespoon dye to 1oz or 30ml acetone. It won’t all dissolve so let it settle after shaking it before use. I’m using 100% acetone from the hardware store and not nail polish remover.
Was it rit poly dye? If it wasn’t poly it won’t work. The best stuff around is prochem dyes. You get a great jar that holds the dye and the smallest container will last you forever. Here’s a link. prochemicalanddye.net/prosperse-disperse-dyes.html For any other colors you can use idye poly. I like prochem better idye has more color options. Link below www.dickblick.com/products/jacquard-idye-for-polyesternylon/
I use prochem dyes and idye as well. I use roughly 1 tablespoon dye to 4 ounces acetone. I error on the side of too much acetone, and I often refill the acetone a few times before adding more dye to my solution. I do not think the ratios matter all that much because only so much dye can become suspended into the acetone. Just always let the mixture settle before using it, you do not want to draw up chunks of dye for the glue bed.
In the other video a toothpick was used to maneuver the dye and this video appears to have an electric rod, what is being used here to move the colors? I think it makes a huge difference.
Love this result. Just getting all materials to try this method out myself! If you had a few tips you wish you could have known your self when you did your first one what would they be? I've watched all the different glue bed videos out there but looking for most important pro tips

Have you found any ways to combat that? I had dropper very close to the glue so it wasnt due to height or anything..
@@BoomchuckGolf yeah. That’s gonna happen. I find certain colors really like to spread out too. Take your time dropping them because they will shrink up as the acetone evaporates. I only drop one or two drops at a time in one spot too. Colors the I know spread out wide (yellow) I’ll drop last knowing it’s gonna spread and push. Then I’ll also go heavy on the other colors that don’t spread to help cushion it.

By the time I’m done manipulating the glue bed it’s all gone. It’s probably gone in 5 minutes though. The air moving across it speeds up the evaporation too.
@@buddharmt dude ask away! I’ve have been filling it less in my later videos. Once the glue is across the bottom I stop filling it. It doesn’t need to touch every side wall, but I will roll the dye up the walls all the way around do it sits level.
@@AustenGolfs that makes sense. I believe you can error on the side of too much dye to be safe, just let the sediment settle before drawing from it. You don’t want undissolved dye cause that causes specking
@@micah_lee I’m not a fan of the shaving cream dyes either. It’s too inconsistent for me to get good results. And yeah it is a lot of glue, but you can reuse the glue bed dye. I have trouble with air bubbles though after I pull the first disc out so I can’t always reuse it. It costs roughly $2-4 worth of glue per disc if I can’t reuse it.
Nope this is all prochem or idye with acetone. Lighter colors tend to spread more for me, especially if I use worm dip. As the dye sits on the glue, the acetone will evaporate and the dots tend to get smaller normally. If you want smaller droplets you can drop a color in another color to layer on top of it. If i want the Innova Logo to stay on, should i still be using acetone in the dye?
If you glue masked it well, it should stay intact.
