I don't mind not having a constant running seconds so much, but I agree one of the design odditiy or failure in the otherwise very cool VK64 Meca-Quartz movement is that it always has to have that 24-hour subdial... any watch, not just this, they always have the 24-hour subdial which in most cases is usesless since you can't set it independently.. if you could, that would be cool, but you cannot. The only practical application is if you really want to know the military time equivalent to the main 12-hour dial. I certainly don't need it to indicate whether it's AM or PM if I can't already figure that out by daylight or lack there of. It may be useful if you're in a 24-hour LeMans race.. and even then that's questionable. Is their any other variant of a Meca-Quartz movement from Seiko that does not have a 24-hour subdial? If not, they really should update or offer another version which allows for something more useful to the chronograph function in a subdial.
I am almost certain the second hand in this instance would "tick" however... I'd rather do away with that; but a twenty-four hour scale? Yeah... I widely ignore it. Doesn't fit the theme well, in my opinion, nor serve a useful function for most consumers.
This watch is a bit flashy for an older person with more stayed taste such as myself. To be young enough where I still felt comfortable wearing more sporty kit. But. You turned me on to the Silverstone. Wowzers. I'm a big fan of Heuer before they ran into trouble, and am familiar with the Monaco, the Autavia, other stuff. Did not know about the Silverstone.
Silverstone, all the way. That model, in any color variant, is simply gorgeous. Also, universal in it’s appeal. I think it would look good in a suit, on the track or at brunch. It’s a micro-grail for me. A Fume Dial Silverstone.
What a beauty with decent movement. In terms of design WG owns it, only thing missing for me is that they ain’t have any heritage. On the other hand, everyone started one day. Great first unboxing Patrick, I have one suggestion: You should open a bottle of wine online, have a couple of glasses and have a rant, or a live show. That would be fun🙏🏻👍🏻
Hey Mr. B! Hahaha, I think someone already does that, but! I’m going to crank a Chianti open for you guys (but mostly myself) with this review. It’s going to be a good one.
By the way Patrick. Watchgecco also sells Pheonix NATO straps. Same strap we spoke about like the one off your vintage CWC. Thought I'd let you know. Great video by the way.
Great pt 1 looking forward to pt 2! Am I correct that the subdial at 9 is the chrono minutes? It appeared to only have markings for every 5 mins which seams a bit of an oversight. If I am correct it would be great to hear your opinions on this in pt 2 as it is one of my bugbears!
You nailed that on the head... You are *correct,* that is a minute scale with *only* the five minute increments marked. It’s... Really bugging me. There’s a symmetry to the dial that’s pleasant, but a practicality lost in this detail.
They’ve just released this watch with a Miyota quartz movement. The blue variant reminds me of the Heuer Monaco. I’m really tempted to pull the trigger on it cos I’ve been keen on the Monaco for quite some time, just not the price tag.
In the manual, they talk about how you can go swimming with it! You'd never think to, with most chronographs, but they suggest it... That's just asking for trouble though.
I have their C2 Aviator and love it. Love their other offerings too but one thing I hate is the brand name. As someone already commented, the name Geckota just cheapens it a bit. One way to fix it is to not show it as prominently on the dial. Just design a new logo, something tasteful, slap it on the dial and etch the name at the back.
First, nice color variation on that C1 Chronograph. Looking forward to your in-depth review after a week on the wrist. I have been watching and interested in what WatchGecko has been doing for a while not only in their varied straps, but their own Geckota branded watches. I think they make cool watches at very reasonable prices. They make homage watches, but in the good sense of the word. They are not just "copies" of existing designs, but take some of the best iconic design features and remix and mash them up in original combinations that really make them their own. It sort of reminds me of what H. Moser did at SIHH 2018 with their controversial Swiss Icons watch. But, I have to admit, that was WAY overdone and mixed up too many different design elements.. I don't know if they really intended to sell it before they probably got pressured into removing it from the market, but it was too much mixed together that is both way too busy and too silly to be taken seriously. So, I would say WatchGecko did not go that route, thankfully, and has just the right amount and carefully considered mixes of iconic design concepts. I am particularly fond of their recent G1 Diver V03 with the red dial. And, I kind of like their soon to be release D1 Dive watch.. Yout get a bit of Tudor Black Bay or Classic Submariner, Panerai and Seiko in that one. I'm not going to lie, and have to agree with Anthony Pinto's comment, I'm not fond of their watch brand name, Geckota. I guess it's not limited to just the watches, but their strap options as well. But, at least it is not as prominently branded as on the front of a watch dial. It just doesn't sound right or cool to the ears, at least to some of us, apparently. And, I don't care for the font or way it's spelled out and labeled on the dial (or anywhere). Sorry, just not a fan of the way "Geckota" looks and sounds. And, if I'm being equally honest, that's sort of what's kept me away from buying one of their watches as cool as many of their designs are and will be (future releases). I like a lot of their mix of watch designs and the attention to detail, but that Geckota branding name has been a big turn off. It just doesn't sound right in my head and I have some uncomfortable feeling and doesn't flow off the tongue for me. A watch design and it's details, qualities and value prop are all very important. BUT, a cool brand name is almost equally important. If it doesn't sound cool or classy, I have a mental block from making me accept it. It's not as bad as this following example, but, brand name wise, it's like DWISS. Actually, that's a lot worst, but it's kind of like that in my mind. I find it hard to buy into a brand name I sort of can't respect or just don't like. I'm not bashing on Watch Gecko or their products, to be clear, they make excellent products. I just really don't like the Geckota branded name only.
Yesss, also a fan of the G1/V03... The brand name I'll get into in the video, but I definitely agree, it is a tad bit "childish"... It's really interesting to me that a majority of folks don't have issues with the watch, but the branding choice. That's the first I've ever heard of a watch being held back because of it's logo.
I agree re branding. I own a few Geckota watches, you cannot fault the w and value for money. I think they would be well advised to re brand their watch collection. Chris Ward have done it several times, not always for the best. But Geckota need to do this
Love the way you do your reviews, and this looks like a beautiful watch. I'm really just waiting for your week on the wrist review to pull the trigger on this one. How's it going so far?
So far, I'm having a great time with the watch. The proportions are excellent, the movement nice and accurate, great stock leather strap... No serious complaints (to mention yet).
Sounds good. One of the nicest microbrand chronos in the market, I think, and the proportions do indeed look just right. And I might differ from most people, but I actually like the logo.
Very nice looking watch. A seconds hand would be a good addition. Could the 24 hr dial be used as a second time zone? Looking forward to the actual review. Cheers.
Dude, Part Two, I'm seriously thinking about get some 4K wine opening for you guys... I wish I had something good for slow mo footage, haha. I'd do some sinful, pouring shots of a bottle of Barolo.
Take Time, w/Patrick Marlett, awesome!! I worked at a winery and learned a trick to pull a cork from an empty wine bottle with a linen napkin! Tips were plentiful after lol!!!
A wine key is a multi-utility tool (has a knife), a corkscrew is (traditionally) a stick with a metal spiral screw, haha. I'm going to do a separate series of reviews for bartending tools, hahaha. Only watch branded ones... I bet there are a ton out there.
Still a corkscrew even with the knife and bottle opener. Mind you anymore attachments and it's starting to get a bit Swiss Army. Looking forward to a full review.
Speaking of, my Swiss Army knife has a corkscrew, haha. We can incorporate those into the reviews. Likewise! I have two VK64 timepieces in... This one I've been anxious about though.
Looks good at first sight but is an annoyingly dysfunctional design. No ticks on the minutes totalizer? If minutes don‘t matter then why use a chronograph in the first place. Tachy scale? Just for looks. But the biggest issues is a quartz chronograph. I have never seen a quartz chronograph that works. Even the high end ones from Seiko stop after 10 minutes and keep running in the background invisible. This one is even worse, it just stops after 60 min.
These guys make great looking, quality watches at good prices....but the Geckota name and giant logo on the dial really take away from all of the watch’s features.
So I'm told, wow. This is really an overwhelming opinion of the brand... Have you seen their *About* section? They're very much into animals, I'm sure it ties in with the companies structure/beliefs, so I dig it. However, their branding has been the #1 complaint/concern.
I just checked out their About section and the reasoning for the name seems to make a bit more sense. I know from researching the brand a lot online (forums, youtube, etc), that it is in fact an awesome company with people that really care very much about their customer's feedback. If you check out some threads on the WUS forums you will see that there are Geckota employees actually replying to people's comments/concerns/feedback, which tells you everything about how engaged they are with their customers. I'm not at all a watch snob, I wear Seikos, Orients, and other entry level brands or micro brands proudly. I personally try to never let the name on the dial cloud my appreciation for the quality of the timepiece. But, there is something about the Geckota name and logo itself that aren't the most appealing. Idk what it is, maybe it sounds a little too playful or something. Perhaps with time that brand perception will subside as they establish themselves as a quality watch maker. I'm actually eagerly waiting the release of their next version of the K1 Flieger watch, so despite whatever perceptions I have of the name, I'm still going to buy one. Hopefully you can do a review of that watch when it comes out.
*Unboxing & First Impression,* 'Review' to come. I was gushing before I knew there was swag, haha. It comes with the territory. I don't ask for payment with these reviews, so companies are kind to share products with me instead. This is nearly *every review channel,* I'm just not afraid to show you guys what I receive.
Mine just got delivered 2 weeks ago. Serial number just below 1000. I love it!. I'll be picking up a fully automatic Gekota here in a few weeks, too.
Don't look at Accurist's Retro Racer 7367.
I just received the yellow version of this watch. I absolutely love it!
Still love it?
Thanks for the review Patrick...great aesthetics on this one. I'm looking forward to part two
What really bugs me about the watch is not having a seconds subdial but you get a useless 24 hour subdial. They almost got it right, such a shame.

Great looking watch! Love the color combination on the dial and the strap too! Nice!
Yeah, their leather straps are stellar. Excited to keep wearing this piece.
This watch is a bit flashy for an older person with more stayed taste such as myself. To be young enough where I still felt comfortable wearing more sporty kit. But.

Just hanging for part 2 before I click buy :-) awesome looking piece !
Filming come Sunday! Tuesday release is right around the corner.

yea even i was eyeing the blue, price is quite steep compared to the generation 1.
From my town, Tewkesbury united kingdom. Didn't know they done watches to 😮
Neither did I, till I looked more into their brand. Their lineup is growing as well.
What is the case size? Does Geckota still make this model?
Dude that`s a beautiful timepiece, enjoy!
What is the colour of this strap? Is it the Chocolate brown or the Brown Vintage Gillingham Leather strap?
Beautiful watch, thank you. 👍
By the way.
I would never go swimming with a chronograph, even if it tells I could.

Very nice looking watch. A seconds hand would be a good addition. Could the 24 hr dial be used as a second time zone? Looking forward to the actual review. Cheers.
No, I do not believe so. Kinda annoying, that.
put a Seiko Caliber 8R in it and they'd sell out, even a seagull auto chrono would sell like mad
Hi. Nice watch. Can you review also Geckota W-01 Vintage Jumping hour ?
Kinda lost touch with their group. However, happy to review them if they were interested.
@@TakeTimewPatrickMarlett Ok. Thanks.

They don't stock this colour:(
Looks like the accurist retro racer
Wine key? Corkscrew where I'm from. :) Nice looking watch by the way.

No running seconds hand is a deal breaker for me. 😨
Reminds me of the El Primero
Not a fan of the quartz movement.
Wine Key???? I've heard some Americanisms in my time but that one takes the biscuit lol. It's called a corkscrew everywhere else. :)
