    Can we petition for a Jewish album from Leslie Odom Jr. and Nicolette Robinson? I'd love to see their take on some Purim and Passover songs!

    i cant believe i actually get to hear one of my favorite artist in the world sing this. this made me cry. not just the vocals, but the song. i cant believe a chanukah in hebrew was included. it is making me cry and cry feeling included for once in the holiday season. its in the tongue of my family, in a tune ive known since i was a baby, with heart and vocals that are perfection. so yes leslie odom jr you made me cry in the club but in a good way

      I know the feeling. The singing has such raw emotion, I almost feel like I’m watching the maccabees rededicate the Beit Hamikdash right in front of me, seeing them make it fit for the king of kings after the Greeks filled it with idols, sorting through the rubble, finding a single jar of kosher oil, and of course the miracle takes place.

    I'm not even mad that Maoz Tzur got turned into a jazzy Christmas tune, Leslie Odom Jr. and Nicolette Robinson sound fantastic and their Hebrew isn't bad! Thanks for at least giving Hanukkah and Jewish culture some representation!

    Hebrew Transliteration:
    Maoz tzur y’shuati
    l’cha naeh l’shabeach
    Tikon beit t’filati
    v’sham todah n’zabeach.
    L’eit tachin matbeach
    mitzar hamnabeach
    Az egmor b’shir mizmor
    chanukat hamizbeach
    Az egmor b’shir mizmor
    chanukat hamizbeach
    English:
    Rock of Ages let our song,
    Praise thy saving power;
    Thou amidst the raging foes,
    Wast our sheltering tower.
    Furiously they assailed us,
    But Thine arm availed us
    And Thy word broke their sword,
    When our own strength failed us.
    And Thy word broke their sword,
    When our own strength failed us.

      @@Dj14e the accurate version is very ‘scary’ sounding sort of so I didn’t want to go that route. This is more lightehearted and more fitting for holiday spirit.

    • @ranvaknin9669
      @ranvaknin9669 4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Your translation is inaccurate and sets a different tone to the song. I find this is better:
      My refuge, my rock of salvation! (Reference to God) It is pleasant to sing your praises,
      Let our house of prayer be restored (grand temple in Jerusalem), and there we will offer you our thanks.
      When You [will] have slaughtered the barking foe (probably talking about the Greeks that destroyed the temple)
      Then we will celebrate with song and psalm the dedication of the altar. (The alter here is a reference to the hopes of establishing the 3rd temple in Jerusalem)

      Given that this song was written during the Crusades, when many entire Jewish communities in Europe were put to the sword by the Crusaders, I think it's clear upon whom the author was calling down divine wrath on. But these are different times and it's best to keep in mind now that we are living in a hopefully happier age.

    • @AlBeGo81
      @AlBeGo81 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@evansiegel1732 these aren't really different times. The original song refers to Christians as enemy idolators and asks God to cast them into the shadows, which feels like a trifle compared to what many believe of the Jewish people and wish for us.
