    I was a Combat Motorcycle Operator in the Marines back when we were still just using KLR250's. They were underpowered, and the suspensions were far too soft, but I was the envy of all in Kuwait!

    As I recall, they had honeycombed (puncture resistant) fuel tanks and the high engine torque was great for climbing hills.

    When I was the CO of a Marine unit our messengers in the communications section had motorcycles. They were the best behaved Marines in the unit. If you farted in church you were off the bike and humping a radio. Part of the reason we asked industry to build diesel bikes was the logistics of having a single fuel but the overriding reason was the flammability of MOGAS. Marines move on Navy ships and the Navy did not want gasoline on the ship. A fire on board a ship is a nightmare scenario. Semper Fi Scotty.

      @@originalup8258 The M1 engine is multi fuel. They can run on MOGAS which is gasoline, diesel fuel and even JP 4 which is jet fuel. We never used MOGAS in tanks. Even our generators ran on diesel.

      I thought the diesel design was to not be so flammable for bullets and explosions in combat. I would not think you would want to take fire sitting high on a bike anyway. Interesting idea and I would like to own one of those bikes. KL650 is a great bike in gas also but the increased range would make this is cool combo.

      @@mr.channel6467 When you were moving on foot or a hike it was called a hump. Humping a radio means they would be carrying their pack and a radio and assigned to move on foot with an infantry company. That is one of the toughest assignments for a radio operator. It has no sexual connotation.

    An Aussie guy converted a KLR650 to diesel power and rode it around Australia on used cooking oil! He wrote a great and funny book on the project called "Is that thing diesel?" (Paul Carter)

The current governor has been using tax payers money for super expensive dinners and parties for her friends throughout the pandemic.       @@BusterKitten They are the perfect zombie apocalypse bike to own they last forever they can run forever and parts are really cheap and maintenance isn’t even an issue at all whatsoever. I’m a sport bike guy but I must say the KRL is a great bike in almost every aspect and their very comfortable and it’s great value for the money. My uncle has had his for the past 26 years before I was even born lol and he absolutely loves that thing

    I've loved the dieselUSMC KLR650 for as long as I've known of them. Tons of torque and 100 MPG with a 600 mile range. That's an adventure bike! If not for nanny state emissions regulations, we could have the commercial turbo diesel version.
    I'd love to get one cheap at a government surplus auction, but these are highly prized gems.

      @@AuRowe - EU regulators require ABS on dual sport and ADV bikes that can't be switched off, which is very dangerous for steep descents off road where ABS won't allow the rear wheel to skid, so you roll off a cliff or smash into a tree at high speed. The regulators don't care if you die off road because they are only interested in highway safety statistics. Because of homologation and mass market manufacturing economics, as an American consumer I'm forced to buy the dangerous nanny state EU regulated motorcycle. I can't vote for the EU regulators or the politicians who hire them. This is regulation without representation. All I can do is remove the ABS fuse. :-/

    German tanks ran mainly on petrol also, when they could find some that is. Interestingly, Porsche developed a petrol electric drive system (hybrid) for the Elephant model. Soviet ones were primarily diesel.

      I can't believe it gets 100mpg. I feel like they intentionally put the wrong gear ratios (no overdrive gear) on factory gasoline motorcycles. There is a conspiracy to make motorcycles wear out faster, and they only get 42mpg, which makes no sense at all. I had an old Yamaha streetbike, and I changed the gear ratios, and it got about 90 mpg.

      ​@@Ritaliethe honda cub c800 (80cc) and C50 can do 270mpg at 20-25mph.
      They produce about 6hp and 3,5hp respectively
      So you can get amazing fuel economy if you're willing to go slow.

    The only problem is Hayes (the manufacturer) is gone, so good luck getting parts if any part of the engine or fuel system starts to go bad.
    But this is absolutely on my bucket list of bikes I wish I could own. Especially in the desert beige color.

    I had the LTD 550. I think it was 1982. First year the rice burners started the laid back frame. It was a great bike. I’m short and cut about four inches of foam off the seat. End result besides being able to put my feet on the ground, was a lower c.g., which was great.

    I have ridden those bikes. They are pretty sweet. I litterally never filled it past half just to save in weight. Great for trails and moderate off road but not in the real nasty stuff. It's just not agile enough for that. Hayes diesel technology did a great job building the motor.

    JP8 (Jet Propulsion 8) diesel fuel is an incredibly dry fuel. I would recommend adding a quality diesel additive to improve lubrication.

    It was smart using a KLR as it is nearly indestructible in it's civilian form. I just bought one because it's SO much easier managing a single carb over the 4-bank/4-cylinder bike I had.

      LOL...that one hit close; I have a '87 BMW K75 cycle that NO BMW dealership will work on. NOTNING. Not tire changes, oil, etc. "Too old". Pisses me off.

      @@tommynikon2283 I had the same issue with my 86 GSX-R1100, but theres a guy who was trained by Honda, and used to Race for them who lives close, what i cant do i get him to do it. He is never short of work either, is shop is full of 70s 80s 90s bikes that the "plug and play" mechanics (sorry, Technicians!) won't/cant work on.

      It’s not a combat bike. This was most likely used for getting from one end to another of a base or something like that. They only made a few hundred. This wasn’t a common thing obviously. You wouldn’t see it in an infantry unit on the front lines.

      Zero electric motorcycles are used by special forces now for reconnaissance / scouting & stealthy missions, they’re almost silent but wouldn’t have a quarter of the range of this diesel

    I was a Combat Motorcycle Instructor at Camp Pendleton. and I knew Hayes and his son (Hayes Diversified Tech) . Started on the KLR 250, got to test drive the Diesel before they went to purchase . Yes got paid to ride off road. Wouldnt trade it for the world.

    These are great for the highway as a work commuter bike dont need high speeds just keeps up with traffic and goes the distance all while having the motorcycle experience while going to work and running errands around town. with some paniers it would be a great adventure bike for travelling.

    The original (gasoline) KLR 650 claimed 42 horsepower and certainly wouldn't reach 100mph. It was a great budget adventure bike I toured Australia extensively on one in the late 90s

      Your klr650 mustve been geared low or didnt run correctlt because i had an 86 and it would go 110mph. Downhill but it would do it.

      Had a 94 klr650 and it did 120mph with stock sprockets and road tires no problem.

    I’d take this motorcycle over any other. I love that it goes 600 miles per fill up. And the top speed is more than I actually need. Very interesting motorbike. Sadly they made so few of these things and I doubt I could find such bike in Europe.
    In Europe it would make a lot of sense though. Diesel is cheaper in most EU countries too

    The Fuel petcock lever is always down when "on" and up for reserve. That way you can feel what its on even when driving.

      It is. That thing should last a few lifetimes. Anything diesel under military spec and bred with Japanese motorcycle engineering is built to last.

      I saw another video about these recently. I think the engine they swap in was about 15k on its own. The source KLR 650 cost about 6k.

      I don't think that number is correct. This bike was sold to other NATO countries, not just used in the US military.

    Enjoyed the show, I looked at those in 2011 and it was a company in Cali. That made /installed the conversions, Back then ,You could send them your KLR 650 ,had 3 ,and they would install the Diesel motor, Around 5 grand back then, These were for the guys at Pendleton. Later from Texas.

    When I was a young lieutenant in the early ‘80s, the Army was experimenting with carrying motorcycles on the skids of UH-1s for the air cavalry infantry scouts. I don’t remember whether they were these, or just standard KLRs.

    This bike is amazing. Too bad they're so rare. I would love a full sized bike with that kind of fuel economy that can easily get up to freeway speeds. I could commute in that thing seven or eight months of the year

    I got the O.G. Gasoline version with only 4,000 miles on it. And it gets around 80mpg. She's a tank. Will run forever.
    Fun fact, other branches like the AirForce used the KLR250's as mail carriers.
