- The Ohio State University Wind Symphony welcomes Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Julia Wolfe to campus for the world premiere performance of Zigzag, her debut composition for wind band. Funded by the Big Ten Band Directors Association Commissioning Committee (Russel C. Mikkelson, chair) and a consortium of 21 additional ensembles, the Wind Symphony is honored to be the first to perform this exciting new addition to the band repertoire. Wolfe’s 2019 work Fire in my mouth, a large-scale composition for orchestra and women’s chorus, premiered by the New York Philharmonic, received extensive acclaim - one reviewer called the work “a monumental achievement in high musical drama, among the most commandingly imaginative and emotively potent works of any kind that I’ve ever experienced.” In addition to Ms. Wolfe’s premiere, the Wind Symphony will feature faculty oboist Abby Yeakle Held performing Rimsky-Korsakov’s Variations on a Theme of Glinka, with additional works by Jennifer Higdon, Viet Cuong, Omar Thomas and Camille Saint-Säens.
Julia Wolfe’s residency is funded by the Ohio State University Concert Bands.
Russel C. Mikkelson, conductor; Daniel Farr and Jae Park, guest conductors.
Livestream broadcast begins at 8 p.m.
Access the digital Concert program before and after the performance.
