    WoW! - I'm 85 a PPL from way back 50 years but I have only ever done VFR and low-level IFR in Twin props - and now a Flight Simmer of 30 years
    I have just bought 3 Citations from Carenado --for P3D V4 - one is a 560 but close to 550 and trying to get used to the FMS
    GTN750 and Hi skies flying. I just came across this video - and can't believe how much I learned at one view - back again to it
    tomorrow - and will study all the screen shots I have made of the positions and Instrument settings
    Thankyou - John Heaton Australia

      I’m a strong believer in Sim flying. The FMS for the S550 isn’t perfect, especially when it comes to thrust management. Consequently, I manage thrust manually without issue. Enjoy your new Citation and happy flying!

    Heey SOG Pilot, i am Type Rated myself on the C500/550/560 and also the C650. Just a tip from me, when you climb out you should aim for V2+20 keep takeoff thrust until 1500feet AGL and then only reduce with approx 2% to 5% N1 at 1500feet. And then continue to 3000feet AGL and retract the flaps and accelerate to around 220kts and continue the climb with that speed. Thats called NADP1 and thats what the proff guys does😎🛩 but nicely flown!

    • @philipoi
      @philipoi ปีที่แล้ว

      And always at all other times fly as fast as possible, also in the decent 5kts below redline or 250 below 10.000

      Thanks Steven! Well, not exactly South Of Gandy :) I was a Special Operations Group (SOG) Task Force Commander (tactical law enforcement operations) and then transitioned to pilot in the same unit (now retired). X-Plane is a fantastic tool to keep skills sharp by practicing flight fundamentals, VFR procedures, instrument procedures, radio communications, and countless other skills while at the same time having fun doing it. I find some aspects of simulator flying are actually harder due to limited 360 visibility and absence of motion. Nonetheless, X-Pane has helped me tremendously and continues to be a valuable tool in my real-world flying.

      Hello there. In the video you will notice that I make reference to switching between GPS and the VLOC. In order for auto pilot to navigate a GPS approach, ensure that you have selected GPS. Re-watch that part of the video and take special note of that portion. Happy flying!

    I've learned so much in this one walkthru than I've seen in a long time. I'm still new XP11 and if it wasn't for FS2020 I would buy this Carenado Cessna S550 Citation II and FA50 EX but I don't want to buy stuff twice for to games so I'm holding off for the developers to add mods to FS2020. I really want to fly these planes and learning so much grrr TYSM SOG Pilot 10/10

      Thank you. That was my first TH-cam video. A little rough on the graphics and narration, but hopefully gets the point across. My goal on TH-cam is to “keep it real” by injecting as much real world practice and procedures as possible into flight simulation. This approach to simulation literally saved my life in 2001 when I flew into IMC as a student pilot while on a VFR flight to Lafayette, Louisiana. I had just completed the simulator instrument rating in Microsoft FS2000 and, as a direct result, was able to confidently maintain control of the airplane for twenty minutes with zero visibility until emerging from the clouds.

    Great video, very educational! One question, have you flown this aircraft irl? If yes how does it compare to the real world aircraft. I will probably be doing my cessna citation type rating next year and im wondering if this airplane in sim will help me in any way

    • @sogpilot3137

      Hello. I don’t have type rating for the Citation. My agency did not have this airplane in its inventory. Regardless, simulator familiarization with procedures associated with the Citation series turbojet airplane should prove worthwhile, especially abnormal and emergency procedures. I wish you well in your type rating training.

    • @sogpilot3137
      @sogpilot3137  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello. To set up a checklist in X-Plane, follow the below instructions. The text is converted to speech automatically by X-Plane as you toggle through each checklist item. The checklist can be displayed on the screen, or removed from the screen for voice-only checklist toggle.
      Using a Checklist
      X-Plane has the ability to display a simple checklist in the simulator. This checklist must be stored somewhere in the X‑Plane directory as a plain text (‘.txt’) file.
      To load a check list, open the File menu and click Open Checklist. Click on Load New Checklist and navigate to your ‘.txt’ file. Open it and you will see the checklist displayed line-by-line in the checklist window. You can use the forward and back buttons to go to the next and previous lines, respectively.
      If you prefer to see the text file all at once (rather than line-by-line as in the checklist view), you can select Open Text File from the File menu and then load a file in the manner discussed above.

    Great video!! This has really helped me make my flying experiences in the Cessna S550 much more realistic. Quick question. What settings or maybe (community file) are you using for your TrackIR? I'm using one of the community files and cant seem to keep the "shaking" to a minimum when I've reached the limits of the preset viewing angles. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

    • @sogpilot3137
      @sogpilot3137  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello there. I pretty much used the default settings when setting up track IR. However, it’s really important to properly align the transmitter with the receiver. It took a fair amount of experimentation. There were times when the receiver became misaligned and the result was when turning my head toward the edge the signal was interrupted resulting in shutter and shifting of the image on the screen. It’s also important to calibrate to your zero point every time you use track IR.

      I would also like to know how to set cabin pressure, is there a set calculation for different altitudes?

    • @sogpilot3137
      @sogpilot3137  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Set cabin pressure to field elevation at departure airport. As per the descent checklist, set cabin pressure to field elevation at arrival airport. Cabin pressure should be “zero differential” before landing (cabin and outside air pressure equal).

    Hey SOG. Great video. How do you make the copilot speak the check lists like that? I am new to X-Plane from FSX-Steam. Just got X-Plane the other day and i have it set up and working for the most part. I just bought this jet to fly.

    This was fantastic (subbed), although I have a few questions that unfortunately arn't really discussed in carenados manuals and ive not used the default fms at all..
    1) My S550 has no V speeds for the actual legs of an imported flight route. Is this normal? I know we cannot set perf parameters because it it a generic fms, but im just wondering as to why or if VNAV even works AND is useful in this plane. In the end I ended up using IAS mode for most of the vertical profile.. and enjoying it more than the larger airlines by alot actually.
    2) I can not tune any of the radios. I really don't know what im doing wrong but I cannot get any ATIS to function.. native or active sky. Only by auto tuning with the ATC manager can i get it to work, no matter if I set all radios up as shown in fms, on panel, and even if i set them to both set and backup channels to be sure on BOTH radios. Really dont understand as it works for cessna 172 and airliners fine.
    Honestly this aircraft is one of the most fun ive flown in awhile actually. Great visibility and performance, takes all the fun of the GA and great visibility and combines it with all the power of airliner and high altitude flight (whilst being less of a brick).
    Thanks for your time.

    • @sogpilot3137
      @sogpilot3137  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello there. Regarding speeds for each leg of a given flight entered into the FMS, I do not use or rely on this feature. All climbs and descents are controlled by me manually. I find the auto pilot thrust control to be most unreliable, even dangerous.
      Regarding your issue concerning communication audio, I have not experienced that, so unable to comment. You may want to reach out to the folks at Carenado to see if there’s a setting you’re overlooking.

      @@sogpilot3137 Thank you very much for your reply, is appreciated. That pretty much answers my question.. I guessed as much but wanted to confirm.
      I'll probably do that I just cannot get it to work for some reason - it probably is something im forgetting but the reference information provided isn't great. Neither radio picks up anything when set and turned on.. and cannot find any switch that im missing re power or whatever to get them on.

      @sogpilot3137  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, the speed control portion of the auto pilot is a weakness with the S550. On the COM issue, have you tried reinstalling the airplane? Sometimes this can clear out any ghosts. Worth a try.

    Many thanks
    Oli :)

    • @sogpilot3137
      @sogpilot3137  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Your VOR #1 needs to be tuned to the published localizer frequency. If using autopilot, it needs to be set to VLOC to capture and fly the localizer/glide slope.

    • @sogpilot3137

      Okay. The target altitudes would need to be programmed into the FMS. In theory, when the autopilot is activated, it will control thrust to climb and descend accordingly. In reality, it doesn’t work very well, so I don’t use the VNAV component on autopilot. I control climbs and descents with manual inputs to control speeds and climb/descent rates.

    Just for fun, I took my Citation II cross country and was running low on fuel. So I did a quick change to my flight plan and came zipping in at KLIT. The engines were sucking fumes and did a shut down just as I left the taxiway. I get this continuous alarm like a cheap European ambulance siren. I put in about 2500 lbs fuel without really doing any shut down. How do I turn off that alarm, other than a restart.

    • @sogpilot3137
      @sogpilot3137  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello. Due to the way the software is written, I do not believe the alarm will silence when fuel is added after the alarm has already initiated. Try a complete shut down, then restart. In the future, I would add the fuel while flying the airplane via the X plane aircraft menu instead of landing first. In this case, a restart will reset the alarm.

      If it’s the ELT, the Emergency Locator Transmitter may have activated. Typically would occur when the aircraft is jolted above a preset G force threshold.

      Hello. In X-Plane, go to your aircraft icon (where you select the aircraft you want to fly) and click on the “Customize” button. A screen will come up allowing you to customize fuel and aircraft weight. You will see the total aircraft weight displayed based on your settings. Happy flying!

    What if they dont have an ILS landing aviable?

    • @sogpilot3137
      @sogpilot3137  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Approach options should come up in your flight management computer when you select a destination airport. Alternatively, go to Skyvector and enter your departure and destinations airports in the flight plan. Move your cursor over the destination airport and all approach options will come up. You can select and bring up a chart for your desired approach. However, The flight management computer should bring up all approach options including ILS, localizer, RNAV, VOR, etc. The FMC is capable of flying any of these approaches. If no instrument approach is available, you can have the FMC guide you to the airport and execute a visual approach.

    How do you ident on this aircraft, when atc tells you to ident?

    • @sogpilot3137
      @sogpilot3137  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi there. If you take a look at the transponder, right next to the four digit squawk code display on the left is a small “IDENT” button. Pressing this will briefly enhance your signature on air traffic control’s radar scope. Every aircraft with a mode C or mode S transponder response to interrogations by air traffic control radar every few seconds. When you’re asked to “IDENT” it allows ATC to differentiate your aircraft from others on their scope allowing them to quickly identify your location. Your enhanced return will last a few seconds and then appear normal to ATC.

    • @sogpilot3137
      @sogpilot3137  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Okay, so on this airplane, the ident button is the red "IDENT" button below the digital display (not to the left). Look for the four digit squawk code (6543 in this case) and just below it is the red light (IDENT). It's kind of small, but doable during flight. Good luck!

    a little late to disengage autopilot don't you think, what if something malfunctioned RIGHT as you were above the runway and you didnt have enough time to take control of the landing?! you could've slammed into the runway! i would've liked to be in control looong before i was right above the runway. overall incredible vid tho!

    • @sogpilot3137
      @sogpilot3137  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      On a precision approach the minimum engaged altitude is 200 feet AGL which is the standard DH for an ILS or LPV approach. Point of disengagement on a precision approach is a matter of preference.

    • @sogpilot3137

      I created the checklist from the pilot operating handbook in a text format. The checklist is being read by X-Plane’s built in text read feature.

      Okay. Speaking for myself, whenever something stops working, the first place I look is anything that has changed. For example, did I do a software update? Did I add a new plug-in? Did I change a setting? Did I install new hardware? What has changed on your system between the time ATC last worked and now?

    It Works, similar To This. However, NOT Exactly the Same. So This is good for Practise. ONLY, if You Bear in Mind, That it ACTUALLY, works slightly Differently AND YOU ALSO LEARN - HOW IT "ACTUALLY WORKS".
