Wood or Mechanical Pencils - which pencils should you use?

So today I thought I would talk about pencils again and explain the differences between traditional wooden pencils and mechanical pencils. You can see how traditional wooden pencils are made it this terrific video from Derwent • Video It's introduced by my friend Alex Farthing, who runs the Pencil Museum in Keswick, when I will be on October 23 24 25th 2013 - see you there!
The main difference is the leads. Pencils don's actually use lead, they use graphite. Wooden pencils mix graphite with clay to add strength and wax to make them a bit smoother. The more clay, the harder the pencil. Hard = H Soft = B so the standard HB pencil is in the middle - a Goldilocks pencil - not to hard and not too soft!
Mechanical pencils can have very fine leads which mean you don't have to sharpen them. But this puts huge strain on the lead while you draw. So they are are graphite mixed with polymers to give extra strength. If you press lightly, I find Hi Polymer leads erase more cleanly, so they are slightly better for underdrawing of pen and ink drawings.
Wooden pencils allow the lead to shape itself and you can use the lead sideways on for more effect. I always feel more "connected" to ideas and feelings when I use a wooden pencil - if you know what I mean!

I use a Rotring Tikky Graphic 0.3 pen and copic ciao marker pens. The paper is fairly cheap drawing cartridge or bristol paper.

When I was a kid I used to love mechanical pencils and would only draw with those, but now I'm more of a fan of wooden pencils. There's just something about the way they feel and the smell of the wood and graphite that instantly bring me to a happy place where I can just focus on my doodles.
i think mechanical pencils because i think when i write it looks better but regular pencils can shade better

I've recently started to use a Uni Kuru Toga. I love it and reckon it's the 'king' of mechanicals! The composition of the leads is revolutionary.
Both kinds are great. For me, it's a pretty simple rule of thumb:
Want flowy dynamic lines with varying weight? Go with traditional wooden pencil. (You'll be wasting your time widening lines in a way that's not natural if you're trying this with a mechanical pencil.) These also tend to be better for smoothly shading in large areas.
Need tight and highly consistent fine lines? Nothing beats the mechanical pencil. (Trying that with a wooden pencil means you'll be wasting half of it in the sharpener.) I always prefer these for fine detail work.
And how do clutch pencils fit into this?
I prefer wooden pencils because mechanical pencil leads can be downright *squeaky* at times, like scratching fingernails on a chalkboard.
+Shoo Rayner I like drawing myself and I prefer drawing with mechanical pencils for some reason, it feels like my lines are drawn cleaner with it. And the lead stays nice and sharp as it wears down while a wooden pencil's tip becomes blunter so your lines aren't as sharp looking and I find it a real hassle sharpening one because some pencils or sharpeners just plain suck and it the pencil doesn't want to sharpen right at all.
yesterday i sharpened my pencil 5 times and every single time it broke. I tried to sharpen 10 different pencils and the same thing happened.

If it’s squeaky, try using a softer lead grade like 2B, or even try higher quality lead. I recommend Pentel Ain Stein 2B. I use that with a Steadtler 925 25 0.5 Drafting pencil and I have no problems with squeaking.
@@retrohai7897 I had the same problem. Get a new sharpener,or try not to make it too sharp. Either you sharpened it too much,or it broke while it was inside the sharpener.
I use mechanical pencils for Writing down notes and I use wooden pencils for drawing. :)

I prefer mechanical, because when I use wood pencils I don't like the hard grip. And mechanical pencils have more better grips and features...... SO I LIKE TO USE MECHANICAL PENCILS OVERALL
Congrats on 5 years of great videos! I work with kids being adopted out of the foster care system in Portland Oregon and I love introducing your videos to them. I love all kinds of pencils and love to show the kids how you can draw, draw, draw with whatever you have at hand.
I personally like Staedtler everything, I have a set of Staedtler wooden pencils and all their range of mechanical pencils. Also love their eraser and sharpeners. There are also some fancy mechanical pencils they make that I haven't been able to find in shops, guess I'll have to order those.
The main reason I like Mechanical Pencils better is 1. you never have to sharpen them so they stay pretty skinny all the time, unlike wooden ones when you use it a lot, a side of it gets flat, and you have to sharpen it like every 20 mins. 2. erasers for mechanical pencils are usually much easier to erase (depending on what kind of pencil brand you buy), but when I erase with say, a wooden pencil writing with the eraser that comes on it, it usually just smears it and makes a loud sound that, imo, is distracting. Idk, probably just me.
Do you know if kneaded erasers work on mechanical pencils?

This is pretty late on the matter, but I actually just learned what kneaded erasers are a while ago. They most likely work for erasing because, well, regular pencils use graphite as well. There's no reason why it shouldn't work to be honest.

I love the texture and line variation you can get with wooden pencils, but mechanical pencils are so much more convenient and make for much cleaner work. Not having to sharpen is nice and my point is always sharp without constant maintenance. I also prefer the feel of holding a mechanical pencil.

I use Kuru Toga 0.5 mm mechanical pencil because it produces consistent-width lines because there is a rotating mechanism in the pencil that always keep your lead on the sharpest point. I dont really like wooden pencils very much because they require too much sharpening. Although my favorite thing to do with wooden pencil is to sharpen them with an exacto knife.

Wooden pencils are great for drawing or bubbling on test scantrons. Mechanical pencil are great for writing.
It's is very wise to have a wooden pencils vs mechanical . But both are great.

i think its better to use aa mechanical pencil because if you think about the wood on the pencil being put in the bin and only the graphite being really used but the mechanical pencils dont waste wood only use graphite. However , if somebody throws the pencil away that gets wasted but i have a mechanical pencil myself (KOH -I- NOO TOISON D'OR 5900) and i keep it very safe because i really like being eco-friendly.

Pencils are eco-friendly, you have to remember wood is reforested timber (otherwise they would be ridiculously expensive).
also with th 2mm lead of a wooden pencil you waste a lot of lead just to get the tip sharp again.

I like wood pencils because I like to write hard, squeezing against the paper so when I use mechanical pencils, the lead breaks in like 3 seconds and I have more control and feel more comfortable using wood pencils than mechanical pencils plus for people who is saying wood pencils breaks in like 20 mins, you probably aren't use to write with wood pencils. I sharpen my wood pencils once a week. Ps. Yes I'm not used to write in mechanical pencils, no hate.
This is literally th exact same reason why I prefer wooden pencils too.
It takes a bit of time to get used to mechanicals but they are an amazing option to have since you can just throw one in your pocket and not worry about taking a sharpener. Wooden ones are better at some fronts (nob breaking as easily is one of them) but be aware that mechanical ones have advantages as well such as not needing to be sharpened, relatively consistent lines and teaching you to control the pressure you apply which helps with Nibs and anything involving brushes as well.
In exchange for this information, will you give me the secret of sharpening a pencil once a week?

I just started playing with mechanical pencils today and I can see like you said why alot of artists like them so much.
I prefer wooden pencils to mechanical as you can do different styles with wooden you can get thin sharp lines to think lines

Have you tried the pentel graphgear 1000 mechanical pencil? I love it for many of the reasons you mentioned liking the rotring 800. I just found your videos a few weeks ago and have been working my way through them. Keep up the good work! I wish I'd found your videos years ago! :)
You forgot to mention clutch pencils. I like these a lot as they are kind of in between the propelling style of pencil and the traditional pencil. Faber-Castell and Staedtler do some nice ones. You also get to buy the special sharpener for them. 😀
I just bought an 800+ by the way. Expensive but very nice and should last a long time.

Derwent is the best. I just picked up a set and am over the moon with my drawings.
I would think every artist has moods, I use both.Sometimes I use those flat carpenters pencils.I heard of a guy who paints with his own blood,Now that's way over the LINE (yes, pun intended) as far as I'm concerned.
In architecture class, only a mechanical pencil will do. The lines have to be exact thicknesses. A traditional pencil slowly gives a fatter and fatter line, even with constant sharpening, it's very very hard to control; the teacher actually made us try to prove this point.

Mechanical pencils are way better couse they are consistent. When you use a whole pencil you will have just a small piece of wood. But with mechanical pencil you can just put a new lead in that baby and start drawing again :D

I prefer Mechanical pencil's because,when you break the tip of the pencil u can easily push the top and start writing again.My second reason is i get a better grip on mechanical pencil's than wooden pencil's
Anyone have tips on the best way to sharpen wooden pencils? Im curious how well electric or hand crank sharpeners work. Ive been using a Kum long point sharpener and toutching things up with sandpaper.
The best way to sharpen one is to get a sharpener from the 80's they were very well made, I have an electric sharpener from the 80's and it is amazing so much power and even sharpening, have not used it in almost 20 years since I switched to the mechanical pencil in the mid 90's, you can find some wall mounted ones on eBay for not much.
I use both. A Graphgear 1000 & Derwent Graphic Pencils which were my fav until I recently got some Mars Lumograph because the Derwents have this soft cedar that easily breaks apart when I try to sharpen the softs like 8b. Have you experienced this?
I did research on sharpeners & the best way to sharpen pencils (especially colored prismacolor pencils which break easy (a common problem) & this had my buying numerous sharpeners. I now use a hand Prismacolor Sharpener.
I dont really like wooden pencils at all bc i dont like the sharpening process and how it wears down and makes a thicker line over the time you use it. I do love mechanical pencils bc you push a button at the end of the pencil and get led like 'BAM', it doesnt shorten, and the led doesnt get thicker unless you start at a weird angle.
some mechanical pencils like the uni kuru are cool because they have mechanisms in place to keep the lead the same width. It slight spins every time you lift the pencil from the paper so it's constantly spinning. Basically, it's automatically doing the spinning for you that you usually have to do with regular lead pencils when one side of the lead becomes flat.

It actually does get thicker if you hold it at the correct angle (about 30 to 45 degrees) but that's part of the fun! You can make slightly thicker or thinner lines but still don't have to worry about sharpening it.
Are those DERWENT wooden pencils available for purchase in Canadian stores?
for me it entirely depends on what I'm drawing , if I'm drawing something realistic I use a mechanical pencil because I can make small light outlines or guidelines..with a regular pencil , however, you can actually learn what each stroke is used for and it covers more surface area so it makes shading easier , at least for me it does especially if I'm trying to shade naturally without blending

Really interesting video Shoo - can I ask if there is much of a weight difference between the Rotring mechanical pencils you have? I have a standard 0.5mm Rotring Tikky - it's my pencil of choice but I do feel as though it'd be nice if it had a little bit more weight to it..
Mechanical and clutch 2.0 for me! Wooden pencil user before. I have a set of different 0.5mm mech pencil and the wooden pencil is equivalent to a clutch pencil 2.0mm best for shading no need for pencil extention and has a stable weight unlike wooden pencil that is consumable.
I like using the mechanical pencil better i have been using wood pencil almost all my life, till the recent year i started to use MP i was shocked at how my drawings got better by using them. And friends sure did notice the difference, i feel more in control in Mp, and cleaner thats the difference

What would you say is more important for an artist?
Is it natural talent or passion and hard work?
Both perhaps?
In my art classes in college, I have always been told by teachers that passion and hard work beats natural talent any day.
However, some people who don't know any better feel that art is a natural born talent.
I feel that anybody can learn through education whether is be school or private lessons or even self-taught.
But passion and hard work are what I feel is most important.
What are your thoughts on this subject?

I find mechanical pencils excellent for doing fine, detail work in a drawing.
I have noticed that many illustrators switch from traditional art to digital and give up on pencil and paper. Personally, I prefer to draw on paper and scan it into photoshop and do the rest of the art there. I feel that there is a magic to pencil and paper I just love it so much I could never give it up! Still, I feel that digital is a further stage in the art. What are your views on this?

Do you feel like the mechanical pencil is better for fine details? I do portraits and I have trouble with regular wooden pencils. I feel like I can't get those really fine details. Perhaps it's just my pencils, but just wondering about your opinion. I've always been curious about them.

today i bought a mechanical pencil i didnt try it yet i think these are better for drawing then normal pencils they make a thin lines, but i didnt find rOtring brand that i want instead i found moLin brand but i think any brand will work

to be honest, use only 2B and HB.
2B pencils are very soft and make nice, soft to the eye tones and can be used up to gray. HB can be used to go into H tones until white.
There's this store that's only a couple minutes away from my house that only sells lead available in 2B and HB
Wooden have a better balance and a longer counterweight on the back instead of a mechanical which has a forward weight (all the mechanisms and springs) that isn't as precise. Normal pencils also have erasers that don't click every freaking time you write also that's annoying. Wooden pencils look better and are usually thinner. The little clip is useless also haha I never use it it just gets in the way.
Yolo McSwagginz The balance on a mechanical depends solely on the pencil. In some, the differing balancing points are actually good depending on how you write. And just because a feauture is useless for you doesn't mean it is for everyone.
A wooden pencil gets thicker the longer you use it. A mechanical will roughly stay a certain width.

Mechanical seems simple and good.
Its difficult finding the perfect wooden pencil that doesnt break with the best blending and so on.
I'm probably going to invest in some rotring pens and pencils :)

I still have a "Fight" in my mind between wood pencils and mechanical pencils. I tend to either favor both or the mechanical pencil,cause they don't need to be sharpened,and leaves way less of a mess.And I hear that mechanical pencils makes your drawings look more precise.Where did you get that pencil sharpener that makes a long point? Is it available in the U.S.?
If you can find a Dick Blick art store, you can get the Kum Long-point sharpener. (Luckily they're also online.) Other than that it's hit-or-miss trying to find the thing at other art supply retailers.
When I use pencil to draw and for the drawing to stay pencil, I use wooden pencils. But when I'm going to cover the lines up with ink and do digital work afterwards, I like to use mechanical pencils. Though I have to say ,it's not wise for most mechanical pencils to have more than 5 leads in there, I've more than once had them all try to go into the end and it broke the pencil.

I use both but mechanical pencils way more. I am a product design student so all pencil drawings have to be fine lined anyway and mechanical pencils work better for this. But if it's shading a wooden pencil then get's used. I never go anywhere without both.
OH! The hardness indicator doesnt chang the leads... It just shows you whats in it so when you have like 30 on your desk you can pick up the right one. Its taken me 20ish minutes of pondering how the lead changing mechanism worked to realize this...

My favorite mechanical pencils are those Bic ones. They’re cheap and the eraser is really and they write good.

I don't really like the texture of the wood of the pencils
but they are good if you need to sharpen or shade
Mechanic Pencils can snap the lead part easier since there is no wood as protection if you make the lead long enough
but the texture and the experience is more normal to me imo but yet i still like both
