I have a male akita now almost 4 years old, and prior to that several other breeds for about 30 years. I must say Akita is by far my favorite breed. The only "problem" i have is when he encounters (border) collies (who attacked him when he was a puppy) he loves humans and dogs he knows, but stays by himself if its an unknown adult dog. (He plays and teaches all puppies he meets) It still take him socializing every single day and can notice the difference if he hasn't met any dogs for a few days. He listens and returns really well, but he does love to explore. And he's smart too, he recognizes people and cars for who are my (and in extention, his) friends. Doesn't bark if they come up my driveway. Nor does he bark if people pass the driveway, but as soon as he doesn't know you and you set one foot on the driveway he's up in your face.
One thing to remember if your considering an Akita. Most people that don't know you or akita's will approach the akita in a way that they might not like, (often to fast and or to energetic) and he'll tell them that by either barking or showing teeth. So a lot of people will think your dog is agressive, while what he really is doing is guarding his personal space and his owner. And his personal space can be as close as a meter up to 10 meters depending on mood and situation
They are beautiful majestic selfconfident dogs, but one things you need to absolutely realize. If you allow him something once, he'll remember that for the rest of his life, and will try to do it again if it pleased him, for you've allowed it once so you will eventually allow it again.... right? It takes months, years or even a life time to unlearn something he liked that you've allowed once. Even if circumstances were extraordinary. Eg. Sick dog/puppy and you kept him in your bedroom to keep watch over him? He'll expect that for the rest of his life his stature has gained enough that he's allowed to sleep in the same room with you.
Akita's are lovely dogs, but if your inconcistent in behaviour or things that you allow, you not only have a troublesome dog, but also a miserable dog. Because he doesn't understand why hes not allowed that fun thing anymore.

I love the part “If you allow him to do something once, he'll remember it for the rest of his life and try to do it again if he likes it, because you allowed it once, so you'll allow it again someday.... Right?”
It was like this. Our Akita (male) was allowed on the bed once as a puppy. After that, he always sneaked into bed when we weren't looking. According to the motto, I was allowed once. But if you follow through, you have a great dog who is obedient but retains his own character.

Thank you for sharing your experience with your Akita! It sounds like he’s a wonderful companion with a lot of character. It’s great to hear how he’s social and friendly with people and dogs he knows, and how much care you put into his socialization. Your insight into their temperament and the importance of consistency is really valuable for anyone considering the breed.
Akitas truly are majestic and intelligent dogs, but as you said, they need a consistent and understanding owner to thrive. Your advice about setting boundaries and sticking to them is spot on. It’s clear that you have a strong bond with your dog, and it’s heartwarming to read about how well he protects and cares for his family. Thank you for such a thoughtful and informative comment!

We got our beautiful Akita from Maureen. Lots of effort went into obedience training and she is the best behaved dog now! fully socialised with dogs, other animals and people. If you aren’t prepared for intense training DONT get an Akita, simple!

I've had 1 experience meeting 2 akitas. I just happened to run into them at a pet store, they were definitely the American variety, but they were both so sweet it was unreal. Beautiful and so sweet. I asked their owner if I could pet them and his girl dog was so cute, I squatted down to pet her and she was really trying to sit in my lap! Those 2 definitely came from a good breeder and went to an amazing family.

Sitting with your back to them is proof that they are open-minded and not at all wary. The first dog my family had was an Akita/magazine mix. My mother's sister's house also had a pure white Akita and a baby Akita. You can only understand how great Akitas are if you live with one. Their fighting spirit, which allows them to fight even with a bear without flinching, and their loyalty, which will stay with their owner for life, are truly amazing. They are not friendly to everyone and have a temperament, so training is essential.

Thank you for that wonderful video, showing us these amazing dogs. I had the chance of taking care of German Shepard and 2 Newfoundland dogs, now I am in company of a 6 year old male and a 3 year old female Akita, Daiki and Ichika. I had a female Akita, Daichika, before and my decision is clear, once you had the chance to take care of an Akita you‘ll never be able to ged rid of the Charme, the majesty and loyalty of this breed again. Their stubbornness and independence is fascinating if you can deal with it. My soulmates now and forever 😍

I have had several Akitas in my life. I currently have a Japanese white Akita male and an American Akita female in brindle with white checks and a black mask who live happily together. The male dog can also run freely on walks. On the subject of the temporary testing phase that begins with puberty, I can say that all of my male Akita dogs were extreme in this regard, which is not for the faint-hearted. But I can say that after every male you have kept, it takes less time and becomes easier with the wealth of experience you have. On the other hand, I have always found female dogs to be much easier. I would also like to mention that sometimes there are Akitas who do not accept other Akitas in the household, including those of the opposite sex, my very first male dog was like that. For us there are no better, smarter, more loyal and more dedicated dogs than the Akita, our motto is, once an Akita, always an Akita.

I don’t think you need experience. Sometimes they just need to like you and choose you as their fav person … Then they
Ikely become easy to deal with because they chose to want to please you. I’m not experience but my boy just walked straight to me and nuzzled my hand … so took him home and he’s the sweetest. Not at all aggressive …never wandered away from my yard even if my fence isn’t that high, and easy to toilet train too. All the neighbors knows he’s friendly and pats him freely.

I got an older Akita inu puppy recently. I guess it’s important to get them from a good breeder. He has excellent temperament. Gets along with other dogs male or female. Friendly to people. Great recall, I can trust him to come to me when called (but can’t say the same for all other orders its hit or miss depending on his mood). Not mentioned in this video is how amazingly easy it was to get them potty trained. After one accident my pup knows exactly where he ought to go do his business. After one mishap, he knows not to dig up my garden as well. This breed is highly intelligent. Everyone is amazed at how friendly, clean, and beautiful he is. I mean the Akita inu don’t smell doggy like most dogs.

Back in the 80’s, my first roommate on HHI, SC, had a black/silver American Akita male named Shogun. Beautiful beast of a dog. Very intelligent & very aloof-he DID know that he was “better”. He 8 I bonded almost immediately. My roomie worked nights & I worked days. Shogun would alternate his bed location accordingly. I finally put another bed in my room for him. 😂🤣😂❤️❤️❤️

We lost my Japanese Akita in 2023 at 18years 5months she was a brindle female with white paws and a white spot on her chest she was the perfect dog no prey drive our 11 cats were the bosses which she protected from foxes as well as our other 3 dogs she was used as a medical assistance dog as she had to be able to pull a 16 stone man away from certain chemicals and spent time on the children's and old aged wards in the hospital, she had a very long and happy life from when we rescued her when she was 7 years old after the previous owner tried to force breed her and she turned round and neutered the dog and she was sued but her insurance would not cover her, Ebony Bear is missed and our new very very large short haired Giant Alaskan Malamute has some big paws to fill.

My dad brought home an American Akita when I was 16. We named him Johnny because the guy who gave him to my dad had named him "Juan de Dios". I had no dog training ability/experience, knew nothing about the breed. Other than my heeler, Johnny was the most naturally obedient dog I had. Rarely barked, only went to the bathroom in a certain corner of the backyard, got along with our chickens, understood directions just by pointing or facial gestures, never showed aggression towards people or anyone visiting. All of this he learned with simple stern "no" and spending a lot of time with him. He absolutely did not like with my friend's Rottweiler probably because the rott was already showing aggression. But when we worked on a cherry farm the farmer had a young german shepherd the same age as him and they were best buds during that harvest. All the difficult traits about Akitas I didn't even learn until years later when there was internet to research. But from my experience I would have no clue they were dangerous or could be difficult. My dad who is not even a dog person and kind of just tolerated him at rhe time wanted to get another Akita over the last few years because he said they were so smart and obedient like Johnny.

just a couple of minutes in and totally recognise this. My rescue Am Akita (5 yr old and skipped dog socialisation) has done really well in learning to let other dogs pass without lunging or other reaction; but even when he has been totally polite a passing dog on a few occasions has yelped as if being attacked.... Recognising that body language from physical build gives that message to other dogs even when my boy is being polite is useful to understand.

We have a tweenie - her mother was Akita Inu, and her father was an (American) Akita. Having met quite a few of them now, I think...generally speaking these dogs are not pets, you don't own them. You sign a housemate agreement, and the relationship is far more based on cooperation than a standard owner-pet arrangement. We've since adopted two more rescues, and she's raised them both from a young age...with the result that we now have to negotiate with an Akita-like Chihuahua and an Akita-like Romanian Heinz 57 in the exact same way we do with her :D

Of course I have spoiled my 15 year old beagle/lab rescue dog mix, so an Akita would be a 24 hr a day challenge for me, like having an alien being sharing your home! Dogs are amazing! I have watched this confident affectionate behaviour when greeting people in many Spitz type dogs, and our German Spitz has it too. If possible, he wants to be at face level with anyone he greets, so he climbs on their lap and stares them right in the face with his Spitz smile. These dogs are not naturally subservient, they will obey their people, but they see themselves as basically equal with strangers. That is why it is so important to socialize them very well from an early age.

Hi Anneka...your Akita videos are really helpful when it comes to choosing this magnificent breed. These dogs are so much ingrained in the Japanese culture, that people who are either sick or having a baby would be given tiny Akita statues symbolizing health and well-being. I've heard the first record of these dogs in the U.S was from the late 1930s when Helen Keller brought two Akitas with her from Japan. Also, when American soldiers came to Japan in World War 2, they were so impressed by this breed that many decided to bring an Akita back home with them after finishing their military tour. By the way, the Akita depicted on a stamp at 1:29 is Tachibana; one of the few dogs to survive the war.

I have two Akitas, both male, father and son. We've been attacked numerous times, other dogs are usualy afraid and run away from us or they attack us and then they run away 😅 I always tought it had something to do with their scent but as is turns out (watching this video) it's the ears 😂
People love them, kids always chase them just to pet them 😂 and older people always comment how beautiful they are.
They really are one of the best breeds.

I have two wonderful Shibas (a red male and a black female) and it is so easy to see them in these beautiful Akitas. I think their smaller size makes them a little easier to manage as pets, but they are still a real handful, and not, I think, what most owners are looking for in a companion pet. Teddy and Athena (my shibes) are super aloof, cat-like, and odd. I love them so much, but they are not typical pet dogs at all. Their normal behavior with me and each other seems very aggressive to people who are not used to them.

Helo Anika, nice job! I have had Akitas for 15 years. There is a secret to have some succes with this beauties. "Akitas are very sensible to owners emotions", when they do some wrong, just show you are sad, there is no need to yealing or beating, but, when do good, show you are hapy. By the way: NEVER beat an Akita, it is realy dangerous. 2 rides a day, let him be friend of other people, they behave as your secretary, They realy differenciate, family, friends, others and hostile people. While on the ride, let the dog be a dog, beware, they search others as preys, hunt and try to get other dogs, you should not allaw because other dogs usualy have no chance, they are very fast killers, so hold far from problems. From the gate of our house in, they have accesss to all, what becomes good, they help to take care. They are more than dogs, they are partners. The only breed of dog my actual Akita tolerates are the Shiba inu, maybe because they look like Akita puppies. By by.

One of the most lovely dogs I’ve ever met was a an American Akita dog ( I know that they are pretty much separate breed to the original Japanese breed but still share many of the same characteristics), who was in a rescue Center that I was hoping to volunteer at for dog walking, the absolute size of him! As sweet as pie but I knew about their prey drive & strength so I knew that if he wanted to chase something I would not have had a sing hope in all 7 circles of hell that I could have held on to him 😂😂😂😂. The guys people at the centre actually appreciated my honesty when I told them ( and we both had a laugh 😹), so I donated money & still do to this day & I actually adopted a dog from them several years later ( a border collie so still plenty of work involved 😂😂😂😂).
The Akita was actually adopted out several years ago to a loving home ( a person who funnily enough knew the dog through someone at the shelter) & was well cared for & loved ❤

Akitas are a beautiful breed, for me it's the best i've had my whole life! As for the training sure you can socialize since a very young age but they all have their own character and it's ok as long as you can manage your dog, reduce their stress and give them the best life they could possibly have. My 3 years old male akita is part of the family and every family member, friends or person that knows him, knows he is the sweetest boy. But he can become reactive sometimes on walks, especially with other male dogs. Some breeds in particular trigger him. We learned to read his body language and to use techniques such a the clicker and it works really well! If you are patient enough for them to develop without comparing them to "your usual family dog", they will become the best addition to the family !

Akita dogs are loyal to their masters and will attack anyone they deem to be an enemy, even humans, with all their might.
The master needs to teach them who they should not attack.
They are smart enough to understand what they are taught.

I have two american akitas. one male we got as a 12 week old puppy, and one female we adopted later in her life from an unfortunate situation.
female is all beauty no brains and chaos incarnate, champion line bred but likes to eat walls. She had no real early life training, was stuck outside in a kennel so we're just kinda, dealing with the chaos as it happens, we've tried crufts level trainers an everything nobody can get through her stubborn personality.
male was an oopsie baby with both immense brawn and ridiculous amounts of brain. he can open every door in the house (including the microwave door), so we have to have locks on everything, he's pretty well behaved thanks to the boundaries we set early on, but he still has his stubborn "brilliant personality" moments.
Walking them is a constaint stress, purely because of, as it's said in the video, other dogs constantly taking a crack at them both. Many owners in our area just dont seem to want to keep their dogs on leashes, so we're constantly on alert for random off leash dogs, or we take them to a fenced paddock that we have to pay to have sole use of for an hour.
Bathing them is a nightmare, we have to get them professionally groomed AFTER the groomers closes so there's no other dogs in the salon to avoid chaos.
And a scrap between them both, while rare is often a pretty hefty vet bill, as the female likes to pick fights she can't win.
I do wish we had trainers in our area that had more experience with the Akita breed, unfortunately the trainers we have seem more suited to breeds that take instruction well, often they come to a standstill and abandon lessons when they realise these dogs simply are not going to play ball as easily they're used to. We've had three "Top class" trainers make the attempt with the female now. with no luck in any of them
