I always thought the way Alluka's hair was cut was weird, in those choppy layers. Then I took a closer look at her hair in the manga, and came to the conclusion that her hair is matted/in dreadlocks due to neglect. In the manga, each uneven, thick lock of hair is defined, and her hair isn't shiny like other black-haired characters. It makes me really mad when I think of Illumi's shiny, flowing hair.
You don’t get dreads by neglecting your hair…? I’m confused, you have to care for dreads, they’re a selected hair style, do some hair types resemble dreads if they’re left alone…? Like do they twist, and get styled…?
@@plaguedfrost1753 A similar process can happen, yes, but obviously it's not styled on purpose or cared for when it happens due to neglect. I've seen people's hair develop little mats that resemble dreadlocks due to lack of care (say, at the base of the neck where it's hard to reach). If it's the whole head it's normally one big mat, but maybe in Alluka's case someone tried to detangle it and that's why it's in a bunch of thick strands instead. Same & I thought Alluka was an allegory for someone who wasn't neurotypical. Zoldycks rejected Alluka's existence seeing only Nanika something inhuman to be locked away which goes much further than mere gender.
Togashi is my favorite manga artist, he nailes everything he writes and he’s a really open minded person. Plus i love to pick up references like Goya’s works in the latest chapters of the manga! He’s really awesome
People say Kikyo forces Kalluto to dress girly because she wanted a girl or because Kalluto does it to get Killua's attention Edit: Or it could be Kalluto just likes to dress that way, Kalluto could even be Trans like Alluka
I saw a theory somewhere is that Kalluto doesnt really get a lot of attention from killua or anyone else so he tries to be more feminine so that killua takes more attention to him like he does to Alluka
I came here because when I saw Killua stand up for Alluka, saying she was a girl, after everyone else in the family using masculine pronouns and gendered terms to refer to her, I freaked out? I thought I was misled by thinking it was a subtext for her being transgender, but now I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks that. Overall, even if it's not explicitly said, transgender people can still identify themselves and relate to her story, and I think it's beautiful. This anime really is something
This video made me want to watch Hunter x Hunter just to see this honestly, I'm trans and it just, it sounds relatable lol I've been watching a ton of your videos today since I found your Uranus and Neptune one and I just want to say you're work is great and I absolutely love it and your analysis is always incredibly insightful and interesting and just, great work and I can;t wait for more in the future. ^-^
Thank you so much! Glad you're enjoying the videos :) I definitely recommend HunterXHunter. It's an amazing manga and the 2011 anime adaptation is superb
It should be noted that the Kakin Empire's weird tradition is explained clearly as soon as it is introduced, whereas the Zoldyck family's language is never explained. I really have no clue about Kalluto's gender (it's possible they're a he who likes crossdressing or historical dressing like Kikyo, given that a furisode wasn't gendered a few hundred years ago) but I do believe that Alluka's trans. That's the easiest explanation. Abusive family says "little brother," supportive family says "little sister." Could it be explained by a different theory? Sure, but it feels sort of like an excuse to keep a series non-queer to me. Love the video though!
Being trans doesn't really mostly go with the people you want to be with but how you express *yourself* being gay means who you want your lover to be. I just personally think it would be wrong to romantisize 12 years, straight or not
@@fyv3 it depends on how it is done. Don't you have a crush when you were 12 years old? If one doesn't experience that at that age, it's fine. However, others do and that's normal. If a writer does that, he's expressing that reality.
I feel like when Togashi was making the origins of the Zoldyck family he just threw some random ideas in and somehow correlated it with the Dark Continent so he can foreshadow S7
This was a beautiful explanation. Honestly, as a trans individual I really felt this. But you are a totally underrated TH-camr! Anyways, Killua says trans rights!

BEAUTIFUL ANALYSIS!!!! Great job relating the topic of Alluka's gender and the transgender experience to her story, sense of self, and relationship with her family -- this was such a meaningful understanding of this aspect of HxH!!!!!
I didn't know Kurapika's gender was ambiguous. I always thought he was a guy from the get go, even with his speech which came across as polite and neutral at best. I thought Kalluto was a girl originally, until later on. Alluka I thought was a girl since Killua referred to her as such and with the way she dressed. Of course with Kalluto and Alluka, for me, I know them more so through the manga because I've only seen the 1999 version and don't care much for the 2011 version. I will attempt to go back to it after my rewatch of the 1999 version and just start 2011 at the Chimera Ant Arc. With Alluka, I've never heard her speak to make assumptions.
I always perceived Kalluto as a boy; I perceived the situation as Kalluto being a young man forced to wear feminine clothes to please his mother as she never gave birth to a girl...and the little girl that she did have ended up being too dangerous to play dress-up with anyway; it would be quite distressing for Killua's mother, I believe to be told that she does, in fact, have a daughter only to have that stripped away from her again. You can see when the boys were younger they were all treated seemingly equally by their mother, but Alluka does have long hair for 'Mummy to play with;' take away the precious baby who indulges her, and then she takes it out on Kalluto. I think Kalluto realizes now the advantage he has as an assassin being so beautiful and uses his trauma to further his career and become more powerful and more skilled in that art of assassination. Ultimately for him, he is a boy turning into a man...he is just in a dress whilst he does it. I think that is powerful; clothes themselves are not gendered, but rather the perception of them is based on societal gender representations. Alluka I always thought of as a transgender girl, and even then I use he/him pronouns to refer to Alluka but say things like "such a pretty girl!" and I think that is because I understood the intentions behind the Japanese pronoun usage much more. eg. "He is such a pretty girl. I love Alluka. Nanika is such a good girl too, she is so pure." If I did that in English to an English speaking Trans person it would be inappropriate, but that is how the language is perceived in this case to refer to Alluka /Nanika within the Japanese context...it just doesn't translate over to English.
That's how I viewed Kalluto too. I always assumed that he dressed feminine because their mother wanted a daughter. As for Alluka, I just figured she was a girl, but because of how powerful she was, her mother didn't want to deal with her for whatever reason (Nanika)...but, I've never heard Alluka speak to assume anything otherwise. I've only watched the 1999 version of the series since I couldn't get into the 2011 series and don't plan to until I finish rewatching the 1999 series after 20 years (lol) and just start the 2011 series at the Chimera Ant arc since the 1999 version wasn't able to adapt that. My exposure to Alluka has been in the manga and I've never read it in Japanese, only English.
Haha, yeah. But thats all the more reason to support LGBT and Trans, especially right-now. I dont know if you know this but Conservatives; who famously always had lgbt-hate as a literal CORE-trait, are right now really lashing-out. The Daily Wire and all it's Members are doing a big republican-sponsored slander-campaign against Trans-People, causing me and others to blatantly say (risking to be overly political): Please vote left. Even for small Posts.
@Flavius Aetius who is doing that? 💀 WHO? the author literally made her CANONICALLY, LITERALLY trans and it's not even the first time he's done that in his work, and yet bigots will still be in denial cuz for whatever reason a trans character simply existing is shaking their world and preventing them to sleep, so they have to pretend it's not real, AND attack US for it when we don't have anything to do with how authors wanna write their characters. it's just pure hatred to come here and call a whole group of people insecure weirdos, with no sympathy whatsoever toward how we get treated on a daily basis and how that affects our mental health, just adding another stone to the group and lie about our non existent intentions just because a youtuber talked about a trans character. again, yall not even trying to hide the hatred. what did trans people ever do to you?
Yes, she is. Now, a real question: Is ant Kite a trans? Is he a man in a body of a girl? Or is she a boy turned into a girl? Is Kite just genderless now like all ants ideally are?
At first I actually read Alluka as having a androgyne or androgynous presenting gender identity. Cuz Alluka didn't say anything in regards to Alluka's gender, even when everybody else did. I always thought Alluka keeps silent about it because even Killua is not completely right in regards to it. I could understand that very well. Because if the onlyone being supportive, didn't fully understand it, it might be difficult to bring up. Or maybe Alluka isn't sure about it yet. Regarding to the youngest sibling, I never even thought of him not being a boy. Dresses don't make gender, afterall. Even if I am not fully convinced yet, of Alluka being a girl - your video is great! I also didn't realise, that Kurapika's gender was supposed to be a mystery...thank you for sharing! =D
@@lightofthelives Why are you angry at me? (◞‸◟) I just wrote down my thoughts I had on the topic, while watching the show. If it was so one sided their wound not be videos dedicated to it. I read Alluka as a trans character somewhere under the non-binary umbrella term - no reason to get mad at me. I don't deny that I could be wrong about it, and that there is a high chance that Alluka is supposed to read as a trans girl. I am just not completely sold on it, that is all. Until Alluka says what Alluka's gender is, I think it is fine to interpret Alluka's transness how we like. And I think that that is rather beautiful. (˶′◡‵˶)
@@hitsujikumasheepbear967 Perfectly reasonable comment, but Alluka uses the first person pronoun "atashi" or "atachi" which is pretty feminine. (Sorry I know your comment is two years old! Hope this still is interesting :) )
So the people who dont get it read this: Alluka and Kalluto are both born as females but the Zoldycks wanted them to be a boy Kalluto may or not accept that but alluka was in the basement the whole time so she stays as a girl
It's kinda the other way around. Kalluto and Alluka are biologically male, but Kalluto chooses to crossdress while still identifying as male (some say to appease his mom since she wanted a daughter or something like that.) Whereas Alluka definitely does not identify as male, but since nobody really gives a shit about her feelings they never attempted to acknowledge this beyond I guess giving her girlier clothes.
Killua was already badass, amazing friend (maybe more :0 ) to Gon and reliable smart kid. But then we learn he SUPPORTS TRANS RIGHTS??? HE IS VERY GOOD BOY WE STAN
Alluka is Trans and obviously intended by Togashi to be that. As a HxH-Fan, please not only make your own Nen-Ability (cause it’s fun) but also inform yourself about LGBT-Issues and Trans-Hate and about the Main-Sources where they emanate from, as we sadly and unfortunately live in a world where some Groups just have lgbt-hate or even ‚Hunt people like alluka’ as a core-trait they identify with.
people are pressed for no reason. it's a fictional character who prefers and is happy being called a girl! it's really not that deep. nor a big deal. pay no attention to the people losing their shit over a fictional character's preferred pronouns. you didn't write hxh. the author made her a girl, not you.
I mean, she kind of obviously is. The people in the Zoldyck family call her "otouto" (Younger BROTHER), but Killua even directly calls her a girl(onnanoko) one time. And they kind of dehumanise her from the begginning, so it would make sense that they wouldn't care about correcting their pronouns.
When I watched it in sub I just thought that they mixed it up and just didn't pay attention to her because she was introduced soo late in to the series. But now I understand
There is a bit of a problem though: At one point even Killua refered to Alluka as "little brother". That is when he was talking to Morel on the phone about how Illumi (damn this family loves the double L in their names) tries to kill Alluka and Morel reacted by saying "what, Illumi is trying to kill your younger brother!?"
I just rewatched that scene-- Morel says the word "aniki" (big brother) in reference to Illumi, but never references Alluka. Killua only even calls Alluka by her name while talking to Morel. In the manga, their conversation about Illumi wanting to kill Alluka isn't shown, but Morel's reaction is "Your brother?!?" probably referencing Illumi (as in "Your brother is hunting your little sister?!?") although I couldn't find this scene in Japanese to clarify.
@Zayaan Mohammed she looks like a girl (feminine), so i think she already did that lmao. But since she was asigned male at birth, the rest of the family still calls her "he"
The idea of Killua learning to respect Alluka and her identity/Nanika makes me think of how my older brother is leaning to do the same thing with me and I AM NOT OK

She's not, it's merely a translation issue. Why would the Zoldyck family refer to her as a boy while also buying her dresses and dolls. They consider her to be a "it", but she is biologically a girl so they bought her girl things.
I think that Alluka is a girl and Nanika is a boy. Because Nanika is a demon, and demons are usually referred to as males. And it’s also shown that Killua’s family only see’s her as a demon and not Alluka Although this is just my theory
this theory makes a lot of sense, i think it's perfectly viable - though if it is correct, it would probably still be like symbolism for the experience of transgender individuals. either way, im supportive and i think alluka is a fascinating character.
Zoldyck family: fucking confusing and wierd Killua: badass and supporting big brother Alluka: Cutest 👏🏼 little 👏🏼 baby 👏🏼 in 👏🏼 the 👏🏼 world 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 Nanika = sweetheart
I think it’s all up to interpretation, that’s why we don’t really know. And I think that’s what togashi intended to do. Believe what you think she is, after all, she’s always refered to as an “it” “she” “him”
I'm currently rewatching the series because all of the dub episodes are on Netflix. When I originally watched the anime, I started the series in dub, but had to move to sub halfway through because the dub wasn't finished. When I originally watched this, I actually assumed there was just translation issues because I've seen it in plenty of other anime (I watched on some random website, so the translation was never always the same). Because of this I just assumed she was a girl and that the translation was confusing for some reason.
You are a girl. In fact, you were born a girl! Your parents and other siblings just got really confused because your privates don't completely match with what they believe to be girl privates. Isn't that silly?
I believe that Alluka is biologically male but has transitioned to female. This is because Illumi wants to take care of Naniko to use its power, And illumi refers to Alluka as a male. So if he sees Alluka as only Naniko, and Naniko is referred to as he, that makes me believe that Alluka wants to be known as Alluka, but people only see her as Naniko (Male). Since Killua has a close bond with Alluka, he knows what she prefers to be referred by.

I always just assumed that Alluka was a girl and the Zoldycks used different pronouns because they didn’t see her as a human
Same & I thought Alluka was an allegory for someone who wasn't neurotypical. Zoldycks rejected Alluka's existence seeing only Nanika something inhuman to be locked away which goes much further than mere gender.
I LOVE KILLUA SO MUCH HES SUCH AN AMAZING BROTHER 😭😭😭❤️❤️❤️
Togashi is my favorite manga artist, he nailes everything he writes and he’s a really open minded person. Plus i love to pick up references like Goya’s works in the latest chapters of the manga! He’s really awesome
Kalluto is biologically male. He's just very young and, for some reason, he dresses like a geiko.
People say Kikyo forces Kalluto to dress girly because she wanted a girl or because Kalluto does it to get Killua's attention
Edit: Or it could be Kalluto just likes to dress that way, Kalluto could even be Trans like Alluka
I saw a theory somewhere is that Kalluto doesnt really get a lot of attention from killua or anyone else so he tries to be more feminine so that killua takes more attention to him like he does to Alluka
@@madi.5898 Lmaoo.
This video made me want to watch Hunter x Hunter just to see this honestly, I'm trans and it just, it sounds relatable lol
I've been watching a ton of your videos today since I found your Uranus and Neptune one and I just want to say you're work is great and I absolutely love it and your analysis is always incredibly insightful and interesting and just, great work and I can;t wait for more in the future. ^-^

@@charliewilkinson8104 yes i know i’ve been done with it for a bit
If she’s transgender why can’t killua be gay
IKR! 🙄

Alluka is a male. But just likes to dresses as a female and use female pronunce.

I love how all the transphobes are LOSING THEIR MINDS over this and now hate HxH for.. a character being trans? geez at least try to hide the hate.
💀 WHO? the author literally made her CANONICALLY, LITERALLY trans and it's not even the first time he's done that in his work, and yet bigots will still be in denial cuz for whatever reason a trans character simply existing is shaking their world and preventing them to sleep, so they have to pretend it's not real, AND attack US for it when we don't have anything to do with how authors wanna write their characters. it's just pure hatred to come here and call a whole group of people insecure weirdos, with no sympathy whatsoever toward how we get treated on a daily basis and how that affects our mental health, just adding another stone to the group and lie about our non existent intentions just because a youtuber talked about a trans character. again, yall not even trying to hide the hatred. what did trans people ever do to you?
i didnt expect a language lesson-
Yes, she is.
Now, a real question: Is ant Kite a trans? Is he a man in a body of a girl? Or is she a boy turned into a girl? Is Kite just genderless now like all ants ideally are?
i feel like ant kite isnt trans at all. he just is reborn in a different body
He’s just reincarnated
@@zzz_phyr But I mean... he's a man, isn't he? So, now he's a man in a ant body or a man in a genderless body?

@@musubimusubi14 But if he' still feels like a boy? Wouldn't that made him a transsexual man?
Nice video ! by the way your voice is so cute :)

I love how much of supportive big brother Killua is to his younger sister
He really said trans rights

Wish I had killua as a brother
I mean, she kind of obviously is. The people in the Zoldyck family call her "otouto" (Younger BROTHER), but Killua even directly calls her a girl(onnanoko) one time. And they kind of dehumanise her from the begginning, so it would make sense that they wouldn't care about correcting their pronouns.

Killua calls her a she,though
@@CharaDreemurrfan yep, and she uses "atashi" to refer to herself, which is strictly feminine

When I watched it in sub I just thought that they mixed it up and just didn't pay attention to her because she was introduced soo late in to the series. But now I understand
That scene made me cry
There is a bit of a problem though:
At one point even Killua refered to Alluka as "little brother".
With nanikas power she could easily turn into a biological girl
@Zayaan Mohammed she looks like a girl (feminine), so i think she already did that lmao. But since she was asigned male at birth, the rest of the family still calls her "he"
The idea of Killua learning to respect Alluka and her identity/Nanika makes me think of how my older brother is leaning to do the same thing with me and I AM NOT OK

Dang, this video is really good.
