The thing about hardtails is you kinda have to ride fast to dull the shock of the trail. There's something special about the connection between rider and bike when your on a hardtail and you get rewarded by making good line choices and reading the trail better since you can't bail yourself out by letting the rear shock do the work. I love my Kona Honzo and think you would have tons of fun on a hardtail too but one things for sure...run cushcore

Rory Ennis I agree. Your shins get really numb on tech trails though.

Yeet Yeet Potato Skeet I've never had that problem, although I attribute that to running cushcore and my Pedalling Innovations Catalyst pedals. The most comfortable pedals I've ever ridden.

Depends on the HT too. I was riding a Giant Talon with a few upgrades (added dropper and converted to tubeless), it was a blast on smooth, flowy stuff because it was so responsive, but was pure misery on chunkfests because the Talon has a really stiff frame, no plus tires, and an awful fork. I just upgraded to a Giant Trance and it definitely is a lot more comfortable, especially landing drops. A 2 foot drop to flat was sketchy on the Talon but doable, it is trivial on the Trance.

mrvwbug44 I hear that. Not all hardtails are created equal. I have a Kona Honzo Deluxe and it's an amazingly capable bike that I have taken down plenty of steep and rowdy trails and it just eats it up. The geometry is as close to perfect as it gets. Making it super stable and nimble at the same time. The frame stiff and solid when it needs to be but has just enough frame flex to dampen the trail, helped by its 29 inch wheels.

Agreed . I grew up mountain biking on hardtail. I think it's the best way to intro into mountain biking. Forces you to learn lines and bike position.

That's what I did now I'm so broke lol. I did get a full suspension mountain bike a couple months ago. I will say this hardtail is much faster and climbs far far better then full suspension.

    • @mrvwbug4423
      @mrvwbug4423 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Depends on the particular build and particular trail. HTs tend to suck it on chunky climbs as the tire bounces off rocks, but on smooth climbs the power transfer is better. There is also a huge difference between a $500 entry level HT, and a boutique build that costs as much as a decent full sus build.

When I switched to hardtail I found out I was not using my legs at all to dampen the trails/landings.
That being said, I got better at line choice, pumping around and tricks.
Hardtails are way more agile than full sus bikes and that makes them more playful and alive. To me full suspension bikes now feel like a couch or an anesthesia and every time I hop on one than I get to my rig back it feels so fresh. The feeling you get when you clean a rough section faster than you did before and with no mistakes, man....
You feel everything better: the ground, the bike, the mistakes, your progression..
    Sketchy stuff+ hardtail= endless fun

Frame choice is critical on a HT, you need some compliance in the seat stays (regardless of material), and clearance for plus tires. I also think a hardtail would benefit a lot more from 29 inch wheels than a full sus, and I've even seen a few HT builds with 29er plus tires that perform really well.

I feel like I can roll with it if it's early on and I'm warming up, but there is a tipping point where I'm just not feeling it anymore if I take a spill. I feel like it's a mixture of being tired and then becoming too ridged.

Successfully riding any trail on the North Shore is all about line choice. When you ride a hard tail you're forced to see the trail differently and always look for the smoother/faster line (at least that's what I do). Another great video Nick!

I made the switch to 29 last summer and I know what you mean. The most helpful thing for me to get used to the bigger wheels was leaning the bike over. Once I realized how much farther I needed to lean the bike to compensate the bigger wheels, it felt way more snappy. That doesn't necessarily help with tight turns, but it definitely helps to lessen that "big bike" feel in general

In 2020 we have made a pact to not just go to Whistler when we cross over the border from Seattle. So much good stuff to ride up there. You should post some urban BMX vids if you still have yours. I can feel my calf's burn and crumble when seeing a HT on those trails! Had my FS bike in repair so I took my HT to the DH-tracks, not anything I'll do again! Babyhead sections almost killed me! =)
Note about the others being fast on hard tails, I guess it wasn't the first time for them on those trails? Just riding a trail a second time makes a huge difference since you already ridden it once and know the quirks and obstacles.

harri manni it really isn’t that bad, you just have to choose lines better, I’m from northern New Jersey where flow trails are an unheard of, and even the less techy trails still have boulders on them, the only thing i ride is my fuji Nevada and i can assure you it’s all about line choice

Kevin Kanning guess it’s about the bike too, had to take my hard tail to the bike park as I was waiting for parts for my full suspension, sure a few rides was fine but a full day made havoc on my legs! It was a 90s Gary Fisher Paragon alu frame and it was so punishing when something hit the rear wheel, even with fat dh tires with as low pressure as possible! Riding down a curb with it was painful.. ;)

So riding a hardtail is for a real rider to see feel and anticipate every rock root stump hole and mossy spot that occasionally gets super scary on certain days. And let's not forget hardtails loose minimal energy unless the rider hits the oh s@#t lever have fun good post

The orange bike looks like a Timberjack. I ride the green version of the same frame. It's quite good in the chunk and tech with 29x2.6s.

How much do you weigh with your gear on? I’m about 215lbs geared and run 95 psi on my 36 Factory GRIP2 but it’s only 160mm so yours might need more if it’s 170... I do find the 36 rides better setup harder/faster as long as you ride it fast.
And those dudes are shredding! I love those trails but don’t ride em that fast on my 160/160... rider error of course haha

I still have the 7. The 8 is worth it if you do a lot of filming

Teo Eckhardt on the specialized website. Go to your bike’s page and there should be a link to suspension setup

What are your rendering settings? I find that even though my videos are recorded AND rendered in 1080p 60fps, it still looks blurry on youtube
