  • Its been a long time since I've listened to Fleshgod Apocalypse, and even longer since I've listened to "The Violation". While the song has some absolutely amazing moments, overall I have to be honest and say I have mixed feelings about it. Lets have a good time and keep it real while I react to and analyze Fleshgod Apocalypse - The Violation!

      Hey man! Can you look into vocals of a hidden gem, brutal progressive slam death metal band Afterbirth? Latest "Four Dimensional Flesh" album is just a masterpiece and lately they did a live under this link:
      th-cam.com/video/qUESMkm10kI/w-d-xo.html
      I'd love to know how to do such vocals! They make absolutely captivating memorable melodies and riffs. Every second of their craft is with intention \m/
      Their concept is just beautiful, the in-between brutality songs like "Girl in the Landscape" is a cherry on top. This music is experience.

    Well, the actual vocalist is the drummer on this video. And he played vocals, guitar and drums in at least 2 or 3 albums. He taught himself to play drums to fill the gap!!! Francesco Paoli is a mastermind!

      My old band opened for them in a show in Virginia, and he ended up almost having to use my drum kit because his got lost in their shipping somewhere and would not be there on time, was going to cut port holes in the bass drums for mics and then offered to buy me some new heads after the show. Ended up using a kit that already had the port in it, but still such a great guy and so damn talented.

    Not a fact, but to me it feels like the highs cracking are intentional just to add to the overall chaos of the song. No matter, this track is so good.

    • @billybobthekidiswack
      @billybobthekidiswack 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      It literally sounds like he's straining his voice I doubt it was intentional. Imo I would've sounded much better if he end that singing part on a lower note even if he was able to hit that high.

      @@Twiggyay I know it's not supposed to be pretty music but his voice cracking doesn't add anything to the music other then cringe. There's a reason why when they play this live they get the female opera singer to hit the high part instead.

    • @Twiggyay
      @Twiggyay 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@billybobthekidiswack... But I believe it adds to the music. As the OP wrote the song is a blistering fast death metal-fest. Controlled chaos, and the corruption of classical music doesn't end with electric guitars and growls, but encompasses the strained voice in the chorus.
      The good thing about art is that we don't have to agree, because it's in the eye (ears) of the beholder. There are plenty of people who don't understand extreme metal, but we do. That's fine. We don't see eye to eye on this, and that's also fine.

    • @billybobthekidiswack
      @billybobthekidiswack 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Twiggyay to each there own but you can't tell me if he would've ended his chorus with a proper high scream or growl that it would've sounded less better then his voice cracking.
      To me this doesn't sound like the corruption of classical music it just sounds like metal with orchestral timbres in the background (although many of there other songs are very classical inspired). Imo if you want a corruption of Classical music metal band check out "Ad Nauseam- imperative imperceptible impulse". The album is a well composed polytonal cacophony (polytonality is very "anti-classical" in a traditional sense) and In there tracks "horror vacui" and "coincidetia oppositorum" incorporates some purpose voice cracking that actually adds to the dark and chaotic atmosphere of the music.
      Sure Beauty is subjective but there is an objective standard that determines what is "good art" and "bad art".

    Fleshgod is one of my favorite bands, this song is what I call the gateway drug to their catalog. I've seen interviews where they talk about those cleans as very much being a part of the songs allure. It was very much intentional to leave them as it was. I personally love the gritty feeling.

    In regards to your notes on Paolo's backing vox; did Francesco and Paolo work together on getting a particular tone they felt suited the track. I personally loved how his vocals sounded in conjunction with the rest and knowing the band members skills I wouldn't be surprised if it was deliberate but if I'm wrong on that then so be it and kudos to you for picking up on something us regulars would miss. Also, as a vocal coach giving reactions, be polite about your criticism but NEVER hold back. People should always get the most objective response from a trained expert (and any artist that can't take constructive criticism has bigger issues if they want to put music out there 😅)

  • @dgodfrey9189
    @dgodfrey9189 2 ปีที่แล้ว +16

    Not that it takes away from your criticism, because it applies to all singers, but the bassist handles all the clean vocals (when they don't bring in the opera singer- definitely check out "Epilogue", personally I think that's one of their best songs). I think he also does a bit of backing growls, but not much. They do still write parts for him, and iirc the piano player handles the more "spoken word" parts.
    Definitely recommend looking at more of their work. This is one of their most intense songs, in that it doesn't let up from beginning to end, whereas their other songs have more changes of pace, mood, etc.

    I think you lingered a little long on what you perceived as bad technique, rather than acknowledging that this is a stylistic choice that he has constantly reproduced, seeming without harm, for years. Some people approach things differently, much like terminology. I mean pointing it out and saying 95% of the time you shouldn't approach highs like this is understandable but there is always that physiological grey area where what is viewed as the normal way to achieve or approach something, doesn't work for some. It was a fantastic break down as usual but where it is stylistic and isn't causing harm sometimes it is good to acknowledge that the singer sounds like that because that is the effect they were going for.
