    Thank you so much for this! I'm self learning the piano and I was reading some scores where they 8va and 8vb appeared T-T tired many others to understand but I couldn't get what they say. But with yours, I am able to understand clearly! Once again, thank you for your help!!!

    • @SomersetAcademyofMusic
      @SomersetAcademyofMusic  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I apologize that the video isn’t clearer. Octave or 8th just means 8 keys lower or higher. Be sure to include the key you start on when you count.

    Is there a 16 va or even 24 va? I composed a childs piece for piano and the melody line extends higher than one octave.

    • @lyncisAt
      @lyncisAt 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Yes, but the proper score symbols would be 15ma & 22ma - (see 9:24).

    Thanks for a really clear explanation there. I play bass guitar and was just wondering what sign I should use when writing beyond the C above middle C (4 ledger lines required for that one!)? Or should I just switch to the treble clef? (uncharted territory!)

    • @SomersetAcademyofMusic
      @SomersetAcademyofMusic  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think either way would work, but most bass players just use bass clef I think.

    would that 8vb apply to the treble clef?
    in Heavy metal you tend to be on much lower notes + 7-string and 8-string guitars would often have notes going as far as an F# 10 ledger lines below!!!

    • @SomersetAcademyofMusic
      @SomersetAcademyofMusic  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It could with guitar music, but for piano music that shouldn’t be done.

    I am self-taught and currently learning with a music sheet has symbols like "To Coda", "Coda" and "8va loco" (without dashes). This video and other (about Coda) are very helpful. Thank you. There is one symbol in the sheet on the Treble Clef is ""R.H. 8va bassa on D.S". My guess is that I need to play a lower octave after play 2nd time come back from "D.S al Coda". correct?

    • @SomersetAcademyofMusic

      I’m so happy to hear the videos were helpful! To answer your question yes play the right hand an octave lower when you repeat from the sign. Wow! Complicated stuff right? Combining repeats and octave sings!! I’ll need to make a new video just for that one! Good job figuring it out!

    • @SomersetAcademyofMusic
      @SomersetAcademyofMusic  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I am sorry. I apologize for the inconvenience. I made that video a long time ago, perhaps I can make an updated one. Maybe this will help for 8va count eight keys to the right including the starting key. So a C with 8va above it means to the next C key to the right. So, c1 d2 e3 f4 g5 a6 b7 c8. For 8vb you go to the left 8 keys. For 15ma to the right 15keys. You keep the letter name the same, but move to the left or right. I hope that helps!

    In my case, my music is in the bass clef with an 8 above it. Does that mean it should be played an octave higher then?

    • @SomersetAcademyofMusic
      @SomersetAcademyofMusic  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      My best guess without being able to see the music is yes, higher. If the 8va is above music it means higher.

    You're not explaining it right show us with the little bracket sign to Which is higher and which is lower because you can't just play 8 VA higher lower. There's an indication with it to tells you on the piano sheet to play it higher or one octave lower. This woman is making it confusing.
