    दपु जी जो गड़ीसर तालाब आपके साथ गाता था अब सदैव उदास और रोता रहता है।। वहां सदैव एक जगह खाली खाली रहती है और आपको पुकारती रहती है।।।

He was already gone about two months
When I bumped into this tribute on you tube
And cried again and again for much of three days
As I heard him sing, again and again
the Mira bhajan that each time breaks my heart.
They did well who made this video
To show him thus, Kisanji on his lips
Against the backdrop of a Jesalmer lake
    Rippling gently in the breeze
The deep notes of the kamaicha
    Like some yet unexplored sound
    From the beginning of time.
    They did well I thought
to put lake and Dapu together
The one, a symbol of life to Jesalmer
The other, a symbol of the life of Jesalmer
This is the song Dapu sang
And no one ever sang it as well
    May be no one will
Till Kisanji make another Dapu, who can tell.
    It celebrates the oneness
Of the cosmic spirit and the individual spirit
Reflecting so well the oneness of the elements
Ether, air, fire, water and earth
With the living and the dead
Celebrated again as they laid Dapu to rest
In the soil of his birth.
“I sweep the paths, strew flowers,
I had darsan of Kisanji Oh my Ram
I had darshan of Kisanji Oh my Ram
As a wasp I sat among the flowers
Sweet was the scent of flowers Oh my Ram
I sweep the paths, strew flowers,
I had darsan of Kisanji Oh my Ram
As a papeeha I sat among the treetops
Sweet were the deeps of the canopies Oh My Ram
I sweep the paths, strew flowers
I had darsan of Kisanji Oh my Ram
As a koel I roamed the gardens
Sweet was the scent of the gardens Oh My Ram
I sweep the paths, strew flowers,
I had darsan of Kisanji Oh my Ram
As a heron I rode the sea waves
Sweet was the rise and fall of waves Oh My Ram
I sweep the paths, strew flowers,
I had darsan of Kisanji Oh my Ram
Said Mira, I sang Giridhar’s name Oh
Bowed my head at his feet, Oh my Ram
I sweep the paths, strew flowers,
I had darsan of Kisanji Oh my Ram.”
I like to think if Bhagavan Krishna
was to narrate his glories again
To one of his Yadu race in Jesalmer
    He might well say
Of those who sing, and play the kamaicha
    I am Dapu Khan Managniyar
And you may call it my fancy if you will
But my mind is comforted in the thought
For that is the way of our faith
And such is the way of our beliefs
That in the nice place where Dapu has gone
He had darsan of his Kisanji at last
And he, the Omkara, Sound Incarnate,
Peacock feathered Lord of the flute and Dapu
    Played for each other,
    Kisanji to bless his servant
    And Dapu to worship Him
Who hid in his voice and kamaicha all along.

    I thought I’d write a requiem,
    and it would be done
    The hurt would go away
    But it hasn’t by far
    The pain lingers still
Though he’s gone, crossed the bar.
    They’ll tell stories now
    Some true, some not so
And they’ll grow as the legend grows,
    Some true, some not so
    Who’ll ever know?
Already there are several songs on you tube
    Claiming to be his last
And I see in those the cause of my hurt.
Those that used him, earned name and fame
Wrote articles, made films and videos
Records of his music, made personal gains
But left him still as he ever was
Seated on a ragged jute sack by Gadisar Lake
Or a corner of Sonar Killa, the golden fort
Singing of love and romance and heroism
Sun and wind and rain and men and women
Of his land of birth, unlike any other on earth.
I dream of a day when
In his village among the quiet sands
Or some public square of Jesan
There will be a bust or sculpture of Dapu
    To honor him
And the memory of a time
and a way of life long gone,
An atonement for all that was owed and denied,
To one who gave his all for a song.

And so once more, one last time.
    Reluctant to let him go
For it means to let go so much
I do not wish to let go
But time moves on, waits for none
So it must be so, for other songs have begun
    Farewell bard of the sands
Minstrel of a mystic music land
    Long will I remember you
And the magic of your perfected hand
For though your voice was sweet beyond words
The more so because it always had so much heart
What your hands did was equally a world apart.
The magic was in the words sung
As in the word left unsung or sung a broken half
And there your kamaicha stepped in
To intone the left out part.
    And here was the magic
    Sometimes, both your voice
and the kamaicha’s sprung a surprise
By both missing a word, a beat
    And magic happened.
The listener’s enchanted mind stepped in
    And made the song complete
With the unspoken word and the silent note
    As my mind does now
    As I see you
Your old jute mat and ancient coat
Your proud turban and proud eyes
That had seen many hellos and many goodbyes
    Under many skies
You and your face and your hands and kamaicha
Going round and round in my head
    Singing of Jesan
Where I know none of these will ever be dead
