  • Boxes are one of the most popular woodworking projects and it's a great way to use small pieces of stock that are too nice to throw in the trash. We designed and built this simple gift box that features a book matched top. You can build this project using just one 3/4' x 3-1/2' x 24" piece of stock. You can also use the same plan and techniques to build larger versions of this box. Resawing with a bandsaw is the key technique used to make this box.

Because a $12 box needs a $1500 sander to do the job.

I would have preferred it if he made this box using either hand tools or Ryobi power tools (which can be purchased by the average homeowner at the Home Depot).

Nice little project that makes a perfect gift. You missed an opportunity to demonstrate continuous grain around the box which would have been very easy after resawing your board. Still, an informative and well made video.

does it make any difference who the wood is orientated for the 45 degree miter cut? some people cut the miter with the saw blade at 45, not the wood? whats the differencce, if any?

I like to glue my scrap pieces together in to an abomination and then re-saw it sometimes it makes for really interesting wood for a project. Other times it looks like dog vomit... you just do not know until you cut it.

Why do you say resawing should be performed on a bandsaw? What about using a table saw is undesirable?

I have the Jet sander and had a heck of,a time burning sand paper and uneven thickness across the boards until I watched Marc Spagnolo explain that unlike the demo video it takes several light passes without changing the thickness to get decent results. It resulted in a slower operation but better results.
