I didn't think so, but watching old clips, the sparks that flew between them, the way he looked at her back then, especially when they sang Make Me Believe together....in 2005, and that subtle kiss he put on the microphone...and Richie's surprised look...makes me think it definitely was a possibility. He didn't begin to act that way with LeeAnn Rimes or boost her name up!
