That one about vividly hallucinating while reading hurts me. I used to be able to daydream while reading and it was like I was experiencing the story myself. At some point in my life, I developed aphantasia and that went away. I got to know what it was like before it was taken away from me, and I basically stopped reading when that happened. It's just not the same anymore. :/

@@carliu3573 I'm not sure exactly how or when it happened, I think it might have been after a concussion. I was maybe 10-11 when it happened, I was being stupid and decided to try to sled down my stairs in a cardboard box. Instead of sliding, it tumbled and I landed on my head on one of the steps. It felt like time stopped and then suddenly I was at the bottom of the stairs. It's a little hazy tbh? I just remember hitting my head. I know I didn't tell my mom because I was afraid of getting in trouble, so I never got it checked out. Sometime after that, I just found I couldn't visualize things anymore or daydream. I used to vividly daydream daily so it was really weird to get used to.
Sorry this is a longer response, I just wanted to explain. TL;DR, I hit my head and that may have been what caused my aphantasia.

Thankfully I don't think it is a tumor, it was just a head injury that I never got checked out. I hadn't mentioned it in the original comment since I hadn't thought it'd be relevant. Apologies!

10:41 I developed complete aphantasia after a major head injury (stage 3 concussion with a skull fracture) as a teen, but before that I'd always struggled to visualize things vividly or in a 3d manner. Everything was very hazy/faraway and flat, and very inconsistent. Sometimes I could kinda see stuff, but often just for a few seconds or not at all. After my head injury it all just disappeared entirely. I have a very fantastical and strong imagination, there just are no images to go with it.
ive always wondered this. can you still imagine sounds? like, a chip bag opening or the sound of wind. might seem like a dumb question but ive only ever seen people talk about not being able to visualize things, and i dont know if that applies to audio.
@@MarBL23563 Not a dumb question at all! In my case, I can think of them but I don't really "hear" them in my head, if that makes sense? Like, if you told me to think of what a bowling ball hitting a bunch of pins sounds like, I know that sound and can recall it but it sounds pretty much the same every time, like I've got a default sound bank for it lol.
Same with voices, my inner voice is mine but almost like it's behind a wall. I know what I'm thinking because I'm the one thinking it, but I don't really "hear" an inner voice, and I can't hear other people's words in their voices when recalling what they said, it's all in my head voice.
To complicate things more I also have various types of synesthesia, so my senses are all cross-wired, though I do think in some ways that helps with the aphantasia as I can fill in for lack of visualization and sound with other cross-senses.
Hopefully I answered your question somewhere in there, I got a bit carried away XD

10:30, ok I have a wierd story that's kinda related to this. I had a hamster for a bit of time, like 2 years. She was the sweetest thing, like if you walked past her cage she would climb around and baisically just wanted love and attention all the time. She died in 2019 and me and my mom put her in the freezer saying we were gonna bury her the next day. But I wanted my dad around for the funeral but he was at a conference. After a 3 days we forgot the hamster was in the freezer...we forgot about it until a year later in 2020 during the Pandemic. My mom was cooking breakfast and was looking for bacon, she found a bag in the freezer that she at first thought was the bacon, but then noticed that there was fur. As it turns out, that was my hamster. She screeched a bit. Then we went into the backyard and buried the hamster.

This is the most chaotic subreddit and I love it.
That book thing tho! I only was able to really REALLY immerse myself in a book once (metro 2033) and its wild. I vividly renember many of the "scenes" in that book with full color, sound, and emotion. I renember those visuals even stronger and in more detail than the details from the games based off that book. And I should mention that this is like a standard 600 (i think) page book without pictures. The main issue I have with books is time and its really hard to find books that capture my imagination.
I remember years ago when I was so immersed that I jumped from "hearing" a noise or dialogue from the book. Sadly, it seems that deep of an immersion is rare for me and I hadn't had that happen in years :(

I tend to have rather vivid dreams and for some reason most of them are wacky little nightmares. they'd been getting very vivid recently and i saw somewhere that melatonin actually makes people have extremely vivid dreams sometimes so i stopped taking the melatonin. I haven't had a single remotely vivid dream in like a few weeks now and i used to have them nightly. I'm so sad

Hello, I’m a resident of Ohio. Southern Ohio, to be exact, so I am not suffering from the chemical shit in any way. However, I must ask, on behalf of my state, that you all speak up about how fucked up the whole situation is. The government keeps trying to sweep the problem under the rug, putting the lives of everyone in the affected area at risk, including children.
For context, a train carrying many toxic chemicals was derailed and began leaking said toxins into the surrounding area. The police thought that if they blew it up, the chemicals would explode away like magic, which works with some toxins but not all. This is a case where blowing up the chemicals actually made the problem a lot fucking worse. What started as a “Oh no, make sure to drink bottled water for a few days and don’t go near the train.” quickly turned into “DO NOT GO OUTSIDE OR YOU WILL GET BLISTERS AND RASHES, AND POSSIBLE DIE IF YOU BREATHE THE AIR TOO MUCH.”
You may need to move that area sounds unlivable for a set amount of time.

The southern half of New Jersey is actually pretty nice. Its where most of the farming happens (which is why they call it the garden state). You can get fresh in-season produce, pine forests, not too much development... its a decent place to live.
