I say it's both Dream and Nightmare's fault because-
1. Nightmare should have open up to Dream about it (Unless Dream was a complete idiot and decided that- *"The Villagers were nice to me, They would never do something like this"* and thought that Nightmare was lying
2. Dream shouldn't have spend his time *completely* with the villagers, If he really wanted to spend some time with both of them then he should have plan out his schedule and not ignore one of them completely
3. I don't blame Nightmare for not opening up to Dream, I mean- Dream was BARELY with Nightmare so how can he even tell something like this to his brother. Let alone trying to spend some time with him when he's ALWAYS with the villagers. I doubt that Nightmare would want to go to the village anyway particularly because he was hated by almost everyone!
He didn't have any friends, He was bullied and beaten. He has trust issues and that's normal.
Because unlike Nightmare, Dream never suffered this type of physical and emotional pain before so you can't exactly say that Dream can relate to this

I'm glad Twighlight was there for the beginning, she got the chance to learn at least a little bit.
The mlp episode with starlight, celestia, luna, nightmare moon and daybreaker happened later on in the seasons and it had a positive result at the end of that episode.... i forgot which episode but it's a legit mlp episode and i loved it

Actually, Nightmare ate a negative apple because he and the tree were attacked. The fruit of the trees wanted to steal, but Knightmer saved one, which is now at Dream. Knightmer did not know what to do next, as the tree was cut down, and there was only one positive apple, he decided to eat one negative apple, and then you already know the continuation of the story.

I really don't remember where I read or saw this story.
In fact, for me this version of events is more truthful. Can Nightmare act like a child? He's not a guard of positive emotions.

I just realized some stuff about the 2 sisters battle in Equestria, and how it effects the human world:
So, as far as the human world goes before Twilight and Sunset Shimmer brought magic into that world, so Celestia and Luna never had a battle and Luna never got banished. BUT since its the human world a Solar Eclipse happens every 1000 years, and how long was Luna trapped for? 1000 years! So the second solar eclipse when Nightmare moon came back and tried to rap the earth in eternal darkness. And I take it in 1000 years, both Celestia and Luna, will turn into Daybreaker and Nightmare Moon and cause yet ANOTHER solar eclipse!!
And also during the first eclipse, Nightmare Moon tried to murder her sister.

I like the fact that you made Luna slip into nightmare moon for a bit, because Luna seeing herself bringing the world to eternal darkness, really shows that there is a part of her that wants it all back. But this time Luna has nightmare moon/that dark side under her full control. So it would be harder for nightmare moon to slip in unless there is a burning desire to get it all back.
