      Sorry for your eyes, but hopefully, when it comes up in the exam, it will be the question that helps you pass. Cheers for the feedback. Fred

    Hello Sir... Cardinal Marks indicate the safe side to pass... A North Cardinal mark indicates that the North part of the cardinal mark is safe to pass...

    Hey Fred I think I found a mistake in the video:
    You say you would stop the engine and only know that safe water is astern when you go 090* and see an East Cardinal. But if I go 090* doesn’t that mean that safe water is ahead and I am in the danger zone and missed the west cardinal which should have come before I reach the East Cardinal? It makes sense to me to stop and go astern when I steer 270* and see an East Cardinal but going 090* and seeing one means to me that the West one is behind me and the East in the front so I am in the Center of danger and should go ahead instead of astern. (05min as reference in the video)
    Thank you

    Hello Sir,
    how can a large vessel (VLCC) single screw just stop? would the action change seeing as it would be difficult to stop engines going full sea speed? would it be better to engage hand steering and turn the ship back onto her reciprocal course? (no stop involved)?

      Hello, I agree my videos are intended primarily for superyacht crew sitting MCA exams, however, on a larger vessel I would consult my manoeuvering data and make the best call depending on my ship's characteristics. My last ship took about a mile to stop as she was a fixed drive so till we dropped below 3 kts could not reverse the cams to re-start the engine in astern. The yacht before could stop in 3 boat lengths. Hence dependant on the ship. In an exam they specify the ship at the start of the exam, you must take immediate action and for most astern is the best. cheers Fred

    Firstly...I have plenty of MCA oral reports that state surprisingly enough that they didn't ask any buoyage questions :) also...I don't have a car driver's License, that has nothing to do with working on a ship 😉

    dual flags Ry and YG =BS

    • @FredsOralPrep
      @FredsOralPrep  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello Larry, Why BS? It's a standard MCA exam question and YG is clearly stated in MGN 364 section 2.15... I known several crew who have failed MCA exams for simple flag meanings. While I personally have never used a flag as a means of communication it should be known as basic seamanship for any navigating officer. Fred
