I f*cking cried at Iphigenea's bravery and Achilles' nobility to defend her to the death
How wonderful that such old stories can still elicit the same powerful reactions as from people back in the day
Agamemnon tried to defend her too but was betrayed by those closest to him, Odysseus and his own brother.
Ifigenia wasn't dead. I heard Artemis had mercy of the girl and saved her making of her her great preist in a far land
that depend on the author, every myth has multiples versions. Even in the antiquitie.
I think it was Euripidis who made this theatrical version for Dionysus festivities, the myths were much older than his time.
@@THomAs.H.P.76 No, there's evidence of Iphigenia surviving in Hesiod and in fragments of the Epic Cycle but it's true that it's slightly different in each version. Menelaus was kind in Homer's version but demonized in the Athenian plays since Menelaus was a Spartan.
Ya right
There are many different versions
Well, there is another version of the story where Goddess Artemis saved the princess and made her one of her maids.
Trojan War is one of the biggest events in Greek mythology where Goddess of Discord Eris is the principal architect.
As far as I remember Artemis, Aphrodite, Apollo, Ares, Eris, and other gods and goddesses sided with the trojans. While Hera, Athena, and other gods and goddesses sided with the Greeks.
Hera and Artemis had confronted each other in this war, Hera wounded Artemis in this fight before Artemis fled to her father Zeus. Her mother Goddess of Motherhood Leto treated her wounds.
Athena and Ares had also confronted each other in this war, Athena handily defeated the God of War in combat.
(English is my fourth language so sorry for the grammar issues.)
Rule of thumb. When Hera and Athena team up, thry always win. Goddess of empires and the goddess of war
Your grammar is better than most native English speakers.
I was going to comment the same thing since Artemis is the goddess of young women, I was expecting her to appear and save the princess
When you come to Greece , there is this temple in Vravrona, a beautiful spot for Artemis, where Iphigenia was the priestess.
Play age of mythology.. everything is there.:)
The best trojan series on TH-cam. I was so dismayed to find a lack of content for it on TH-cam that I almost started a channel for it myself. I don’t have the narrative voice that you offer though, and I’m grateful to have found this and for it to be ongoing. Thank you so much.
Even though she knew she was going to die, this woman showed no fear only bravery and courage
That princess has got to be one of the bravest mortals in Greek mythology if not the bravest
????
Agamemnon looks like he's wearing some dope sunglasses at 4:09.
Mythology in school: 😀
Mythology in reality: 🌚
Disney: mythology? How can we make money with it?
@@rageraptor7127 Just add a couple of songs.
You should be good.
It’s so sad that Agamemnon has to sacrifice his daughter because he loves her so much
Mh. Like Thanos with Gamora?
it is sad, but still, we need the gods on our side and that my friend demands a payment...
@@chenlevy3773 bah
So true just like Thanos and Gamora
@@danielelunardi9812 absolutely true
Ok. Beautiful.
But can we please get the rest of the story too? A whole war happened and the story ended with the Greeks still not sailing for Troy 😭
The artwork, the animation, the narration is all great which is why I want it to continue on.
Agamemnon always rubbed me the wrong way everytime I read the Illiad. Also the gods were so cruel to force all this suffering for some entertainment
Agamemnon is one of the most interesting and complicated figures in epic history and the gods didn't cause all of that for suffering for entertainment but rather the biggest reason was they they didn't want to lose their demigod children or their favorites (like Zeus for Sarpedon, Thetis for Achilles, Athena for Diomedes and Odysseus, Apollo for Hector, Eos the Dawn for Memnon, Ares for Penthisilea, etc..)
Ifigenia was taken by Artemis in a cloud just as Kalhas was about to sacrifice her and put a stag in her place. Nonetheless, none of the Greeks saw that. Ifigenia became a priestess for the Goddess, and later found by her brother Orestis as written in the tragedy, Ifigenia en Tavris.
It's pretty common in mythology for the hero or heroine to not really die, like King Arthur, he's just sleeping and will return. They even use it in Star Wars, Yoda and Obi Wan become spirits or Merlin in Exalibur.
Your trojan war saga is awesome. Keep up this work.
just awsome. That whole saga was the best you made till now
I wouldn’t have expected something like this from Artemis considering she is one of the more reasonable of the Olympians.
She's usually pretty merciless to men but it was probably Calchas the priest that lied about it and in most versions, Artemis does save her.
I recommend watching the Greek movie Iphigenia (1977) is a faithful adaptation of the play! Its available on TH-cam with English subs. the production is amazing and the performances spectacular (the famous greek actress Irini Pappas plays Clytemnistra). Definitely is for those who love the ancient greek tragedies.
Yes I saw it too, it was nominated for an Oscar for best foreign movie. The production design and costumes and locations give it a strong sense of being authentic bronze age, the army is much more a rag tag bunch. The film is extremely tragic, the Greeks really knew how to lay it on thick. The king is potrayed as much a hostage of his army as its leader.
PLEASE MAKE SEASON 2!!!!!
This was amazing
If you don't mind subtitles or speak Greek there's a great movie from the late 70's called Iphigenia. Specifcally about this. About Agamemnon's torment at having to sacrifice his daughter.
Yeah I saw that, it was so much better than the 2004 which just wanted to rush from one fight scene to the next.
The production design, locations, costumes, casting and acting were outstanding. It really felt you'd stepped back into the bronze age. Having actual Greek actors helps too.
Thank you for making this podcast. I really appreciate your perspective (as I am a high school teacher who has taught this text to students).
The 1977 film is a must watch for anyone interested in this story.
“In order to take the stone, you must loose that which you love.”
She was utterly brave, gave up her life so that others would not have to give up theirs.
Oh, I wonder how Aeneas will look like. Dudr is my lowkey fav dude from the Trojan War
No wonder why Clytemnestra ended up killing him.
awesome..so WELL done and narrated...many thanks to bringing this legendary sacrifice to Life. !!....
I enjoyed this season! Hope for the next one to come soon.❤
This is really good! I’m looking forward to watch the next video!! Tbh, if this comic is for sale, I’d definitely buy it lol! It looks amazing!! ✨✨
Both Paris and Helen ended up in Dante's Inferno, punished in the 2nd Circle of Lust.
Odysseus turning out to be like Hans Landa from Inglorious Basterds. For someone that didn't want to be involved in the war, he's a shrewd detective and has been deceiving alot of innocent people along the way.
man's like "i don't care how it gets done, the sooner we sack Troy, the sooner i can get home to my wife and son... right"?
Found out recently about this channel and loved it. Even more, because Avlida and its lovely mythology is my home town. The storyline is well presented. The only thing i would change is the pronunciation of Avlida. The one mentioned here, as Aulis=i-lish is wrong. Aulis in greek sounds as A-vlis. Aulis=Avlis=Avlida (modern name). Apart from that, all great!!!
4:11 agamemnon looks cool 😎
Ifigenia didn't die, goddess Artemis covered her with a cloud and put a deer on her place, as a sign of her accepting the sacrifice. The cloud took the young maiden to the land of Tauris where Ifigenia became the arch priestess of Artemis in order to thank her for allowing her to live. The tradition of Tauris was to sacrifice every foreigner who would dare to step a foot on their land as a gift to goddess Artemis.
The king of Tauris wanted to make Ifigenia his wife, but she would be making various excuses in order to avoid him. When she was about to succumb to the king's pleas as she had almost run out of excuses and as she was performing a cleansing ritual by the sea in order to buy some more time to herself, she noticed of a ship that had wrecked nearby.
Using her priestess identity, she went off to get to know of the whereabouts of the people who were on that wrecked ship. Later on, she met with their leader, who ended up being her little brother Orestes, who was still a little boy by the time Ifigenia was sacrificed.
Together they made an escape plan that was successful, only to return to Mycenae and discover that their father Agamemnon had been murdered by their mother, Clytemnestra and her lover and Agamemnon's cousin, Aegisthus. Orestes killed Clytemnestra in order to avenge their father and exiled himself until years later, when he killed his half brother Aletes and claimed the throne of Mycenae. Meanwhile Ifigenia remained a high priestess of goddess Artemis until her peaceful death of old age.
Also the land of Tauris was the Crimea peninsula
That's one version, there is no one accurate tale
@@edgarwolfe9 I am afraid that, as a Greek who has read the original version many times, as it happened to be taught in schools and was in the school books my mother had kept, this is the one and only story, exactly as it was written by Euripides! And it's not a myth, it's a theatrical scenario and a fictional story, therefore there is no alternative to it.
@@gkalenaki Slight problems. 1: If Iphigenia never died, then the entire play of the Oresteia falls apart immediately. If she never died, Clymestria never wouldve killed her husband in the first place. Second: It makes no sense thematically for Artemis to save Iphigenia during the Trojan war. The entire point of the Trojan War Stories is a lesson about the consequences of Rage. Think about it. Aris starts the war by throwing an apple due to her rage at not being invited to the wedding of Achilles' parents. Then, that leads to Helen's abduction, leading the rage of Menelaus, who throws all of Greece into war. And, Artemis's rage over the death of one of her sacred animals leads to... You get the idea. Third: What type of school shows their kids stories of Dad's killed their daughter's? Obviously that would have to be censored. If your mom has a version of that play, that you know, WAS TAUGHT IN SCHOOL, then she would believe Iphigenia was saved as well. Because she went to school as well. Fourth: The fact this is a argument at all proves my point. If there really was only one version, this video wouldn't exist and I wouldn't be arguing.
@@edgarwolfe9 @edgarwolfe9 the only problem is that you clearly haven't read anything about this specific ancient theatrical play, but you still feel the need to prove yourself superior to someone who has. And back in the 70's not only censored stuff in school books didn't exist, but, as this story is a part of our Greek cultural heritage, it was contained as a whole, along with Antigone of Sophocles. If you still have doubts, you can either go to your local library and ask to read the whole thing, or you could create a Quija board and have some talk with Euripides himself, I'm sure he would be very glad to answer to every question of yours.
Upload more about Trojan war..i love it also upload about Aeneas adventures ❤️❤️
And the father of the year award goes to....
I understand that she agree to be sacrifice and stuff but did Agamemnon have to be the one to end her?
That seemed to cruel.
He's only the one to do it in rare few versions. It's usually the priest Calchas who does it in the source material.
Imagine if they delayed the savrifice a little bit more, like give it time to think again and other options then she would have been alive and that oracle would've been dead 😅
Still here waiting for the next upload for this series
Cant wait for this epic work .. what a masterpiece
Another amazing video this looks so awesome I love ancient Greece
Oh my this series is just breathtakingly epic❤
Cant wait for the fight between Achilles and Hector(although l always feel a great sadness by the result of it😖)
All this because Eris didn't get a wedding invite.
Achilles is so noble yo. Iphigenia juz gotta take one ☝️ for the team yo!
According to Goethe: Aphrodite had mercy and Iphigenia ended up a priest on a small island, Tauris, and was pressured to marry the island's king, who was in love with her. She declined often, claiming that she couldn't let go her responsibility. But later she was saved by her brother, who came to her due to a prophacy and brought back to her home.
It is just wrong that this marvelous series has not been viralized yet by the yt algorithm.
keep it Up See U. im addicted to this series
Wow that makes Agamemnon not look as bad
Why was this such a good story 😭
You know, we would think that Agamemnon would take this as a sign to not invade Troy. Because, Agamemnon has literally no stake in this, only Menelaus wants to sack Troy.
yeah but he was under oath, he has no choice. It would have been a incredible dishonor to refuse, something a king can't afford.
@@efaristi9737 I know, but still, Agy is still a parent, and nothing should be worth doing if a parent has to sacrifice their own kid.
@@smartguy458 different time, different morality. Menelas himself wasn't too concerned about dragging everyone in a war just to retrieve his wife that leave him willingly. The ancient greeks... in fact any civilisation of antiquitie thought of war as something normal and glorious to do, they have a different perception of it than us.
If Kratos from Gow was here he'd sacrifice Artemis instead
I love Artemis, that would be a pity
Stannis did this to poor Shireen… except she got burnt at the stake rather than stabbed (again to fulfill the will of a god) and Thanos did it to Gamora for the Soul Stone.
Masterpiece.
I have seen heard read about trojan war like hundred of times still it facinates me
I been waiting for the next episodes please comeback soon😊
This is a nice little game the gods have going on...we're just their entertainment.
Do you think the gods still using us mortals here on earth?

@@inmagiasiderum5612 no seriously, you can't sacrifice your daughters these days. The police will sacrifice you. 😂✋🏼
@@keshikakiran7799 no lol, that is not what I mean haha. What I meant is that, it's interesting that these gods or deities are still manipulating our fate and destiny here on earth as we are just mere mortals...

Ikr.. at this point I wish I'd discovered it a lot later so i could properly binge watch all seasons😓
4:10, the birth of sunglasses
Did something like this actually happen? Is there any truth to the story of the trojan war?
Liked it cant wait for the next episode although this was the best episode of all
And where is the next episode if I may ask?
"The killing of a sacred deer" brought me here... Great movie! If you haven't watched it yet! I'm surprised the movie's name is not all over the comments...
Acheilies: The Greatest Bandit in Greek history.
when is the next season coming? I can't wait anymore.
Greeks should have sacrificed Helen instead, she wasn’t worth anything but pain and discord.
i agree
War is just human sacrifice
that beating kratos gave the greek gods was justified
Sure is
Kratos is a fanfiction of an epic, so I doubt they care
When will the next season come ?
Wasn't he killed by his wife when he got home from the siege of Troy
Yep
Can't wait for Season 2
Achilles is my favourite warrior
There was a real history Achilles you know. One who saw the famous shield of mighty Ajax and was disappointed. Alexander. Whose mother claimed that she was descendant of Aeacus, king of Myrmidones.
Agamemnon is mine. He was almost Achilles' equal in battle.
Glory to Iphigenia
First place
No sacrifice No victory!
Wow. Paris really caused all this tragedy because he couldn't keep it in his pants.
Yes I totally agree with you,but I also agree that both Helen and Paris..were responsible as they say it takes 2 to tango..and she could have said no but she didn't.
What kind of god requires a human sacrifice for a mere victory for humans by sacrifing an innocent girl . I pity them
According to Sophocles it's because he slew an animal sacred to Artemis, goddess of the hunt, and then boasted about how he was her equal in archery. There's a few things you just don't do in ancient Greece and one of the big ones is do NOT challenge a God's ego! Ask Arachne how that turned out for her.
There's also another version of the story where Artemis saved Iphigenia and made her one of her maids.
A christian god... You never hard of story of The Binding of Isaac? In which god asked Abraham to sacrifice his son Isaac!
@@jeremygilbert7989 That’s the version I was taught at school too. And the play Iphigenia at Aulis uses that version too.
@@bobcell22 that was a test bro but in this case it was an actual sacrifice.
Try to understand the difference.
Can you do an episode about the Aesir-Vanir war?
Who sent the messenger to prevent sending the daughter to the camp is it agamemnon
Yes it is. Agamemnon was desperate not to sacrifice his daughter, she was his favourite.
All this happened because Paris couldn't keep it in his pants.
😂😂😂😂
Season 2 please!
Yo! Wheres the next part? Been 2 months now. Upload it please 😭😭😭
Great video.
Iphigenia immortalized in greek culture. Many girls are given her name - ΑΚΑ (diminutive noun) Efi...
And agamemnon days was numbered his wife plotted against them
IPhigenia was braver than most the Greeks loved stories of sacrifice and death and killing
Please upload the next one ❤️🥺🥺🥺
Agamemnon had no choice the gods and goddess would punish him, Clymenestra is the adultress.
love the soundtrack
But I like agamemnon. No body is as powerful, brave and dutiful as him
Nice, but when is the next story taking place? It’s been three weeks now and not a single video about the Greeks’ arrival on the shores of Troas!
Please bring the next season
Thanks for this! 🏛️
Avengers Infinity War and GOT copied this story, GOT almost exactly where he sacrifices her to his god to change the weather and get his army moving again....

Sacrifice theme isn't really exclusive to the Greek religion/ helenism. The aztec religion was heavily themed on the sacrifices. Odin sacrificed his own eyes, Tyr sacrificed his hand so it's definitely in Norse religion/ Asatru as well. And even though human sacrifices are discouraged and counted as a loss of life in Hinduism and the Abrahamic religion it's still very much present. Isaac was about to get sacrificed by Abraham until he was saved. The whole theme of Christianity is based on Jesus's sacrifices and the cross. In Hinduism Sati sacrificed herself as a protest against Shiva's defamation, Dadhichi sacrificed himself so that Indra could win against Asuras, Sita sacrificed her queen status, sit for agnipariksha, proved innocent but still accepted her punishment of exile in spite of not proving guilty. Besides tantric and aghori practices still do animal sacrifices. Not to mention Sati burning and witch burning were quite common in the medieval period.
Not Isaac. Ismael was.
Best part of the story is when wife dismembered the evil husband for killing her daughter
Next part please
All this over helen
No Helen was just a good excuse...it was Troy who controlled the spice routes of the north and south, where also silks and other things were traded...
But give someone a good excuse to go to war (like "hey all I'm the most beautiful woman in the world excuse, then people will use it to cover up their more nefarious plots right?)...
@@chancycat9822yes, though back then a bronze age king who allowed his queen to be kidnapped or elope with an enemy prince would not have the respect of his people or court for long if he didn't take immediate action.
Yeah , Abraham.
Avengers Infinity War defintely borrowed from this story.
Can u please make a one full video like 1-2h longe one when all the episodes are done
