  • Armchair Walks are a 'point of view' walk captured on video. A virtual walk as it were. I started making these in the summer of 2017, but this from the morning of 27th March2020 while we are in lockdown from the Covid19 virus.
A 20-minute walk around the back streets of Worthing, in West Sussex with the sounds accompanying. I hope you enjoy it, especially if you cannot get out for a walk yourself.

I say old chap! please don't compare our beloved Worthing with that northern place called Liverpool. They are miles apart in all comparisons. LOL. (only joking folks, b4 the internet police come for me)

Lovely stuff. Birdsong great. I got house sparrow, starling, blackbird, robin, magpie, herring gull, collared dove, wood pigeon and I think chaffinch. Must have missed a couple but not a bad haul for 20 mins 😀

Ah,the mean streets and twittens of Worthing! If i'm not mistaken around the Broadwater Road area?
Had you gone towards the railway bridge there used to be a massive civil defence depot to your right.
Cased the joint for your future "house visits",eh?

Depends on the type of microphone which is being used. A lapel mike or any unidirectional mike is much more selective about what audio it collects. A general mike (omnidirectional) - integrated into the camera, for example, will simply collect everything. The sound of traffic will be reduced by its sharp decline in quantity - though there may be a tad more echo because of the hard stone / concrete / tarmac / railings etc have no barrier between them traffic - so they will reflect it well. As you suggest, where there is no traffic then an occasional car, say, that will seem louder because our ears had adjusted to the extra quiet.

You haven't done one of your arm chair walks for a while. One of my favorites was the one that you went on through a sunken garden full of colorful flowers all in bloom! No wonder traffic seemed so loud out your front door on your podcast the other morn - didn't realize you were so close to a main freeway/overpass! Love that plumbers old van!😍 So many Victorian townhouses in Worthing - must have been a reall population explosion there at that time!
Btw...couldn't believe a car dealership was open. Can't believe many people would be out buying a car right now!😕🤷‍♀️

Great footage a slice of suburbia , seems like 5 cars to every house 🙈, dig up the garden so we can get a few more cars in crazy , what was the building before it became a Morrison’s , thanks for sharing Richard 👍

    • @dcarbs2979
      @dcarbs2979 3 ปีที่แล้ว

I think it was a Co-op. It's been Morrisons for a very long time. They extended about 10 years ago into the former car park, and had been there for quite a while before that (but can't remember exactly how long).

Hi Richard, hope you are keeping well and optimistic. Thanks for this video. I see many people did like it - especially those with local (Worthing) connections. I was not so keen, sorry. I know you made the effort and probably wracked your mind to come-up with an idea but... I think there is merit in a walking video but you could accelerate it at points where there is no development - eg the walk past Morrisons. For us un-Worthies, it would also be good to have the occasional comment (post-production voice-over would be ideal) just to guide and point out anything especially interesting. I am not suggesting a month of careful research, just a few guiding pointers. Even a rough sketch map would be good. I hope you see this as a positive suggestion, not a negative criticism; I have long been a viewer of yours and do appreciate all your efforts. Thank you. Stay safe!

Morning Richard. Good video, the bird sounds, seeing the old Morris Van,etc. Perhaps you were a little bit worried about no voice over. There is one channel that I am sub to. Morthren who does disused railways and other things, without one word. He/she has over 18K sub and just over 9 million views

While I always enjoy your content I much prefer your countryside walks rather than the urban ones but I suppose it is good to have a variation in content as I do realise that some people appreciate them more than others. However, I do hope you venture off soon on one of those lovely footpath strolls.
Please ignore the hysteria to keep away from the countryside (it is only guidance anyway rather than an implicit instruction to keep away) and of course, some farmers are using it as an excuse to keep the public away - most landowners hate public footpaths on their land and will do almost anything to discourage people from using them.
I fail to see what harm you will come to in terms of the Coronavirus if stroll by yourself in the middle of nowhere where you are highly unlikely to come across any fellow human beings and if you did then you merely need to give them a wide berth.
Just to be on the safe side, you may wish to consider taking a folding waking stick/pole that can fully bear your weigh should you happen to twist an ankle but a good pair of walking boots often or not prevent such things from happening.
If people say, 'Well what would happen if Richard were to take a tumble and hurt himself to such an extent that he couldn't walk out?' Well to be fair, anything could happen, just like the sky was supposed to fall in when Brexit happened. And in all the years that the sprightly Mr Vobes has been creeping about the countryside I do not recall him ever coming to any great harm. People need to get a grip and to stop overreacting.

As someone who knows Worthing like the back of my hand it was so sad to see so many of the red brick pavements all gone. I have photos from the 80s when I was just a teen and things on your walk looked so different. I regularly used to upset people riding my motorbike up all those ally's you visited in this video.
I've lived all over Worthing so pretty much all of it so really am enjoying all your vids.
