Ainsley is so incredibly smart. Like, Toby is intelligent and you can tell that by looking at him and when he's in conversation. But Ainsley has the situation of "I'm blonde and I've got a slightly higher pitched voice and look at me, I've got a perfect hourglass figure." that makes people think 'dumb'. Then, bam, she gets into a conversation about something and you can see how clever she really is.Also Leo. LEO.
+Indi Heaton She has emotional intelligence. That's a great trait to have. Plus, she reads Sam very well. Knowing which buttons to push is like the Jedi Mind Trick!
“Women think that kind of thing works, but it doesn’t”, “It really does Sam” (in her sultriest voice and ever so slight step closer to him). It immediately works and Sam agrees to everything she asks for without further comment. She then basically tells him she just just “ate his lunch” and … it goes right over Sam’s head, as she knew it would. 😂
Emily Proctor left the show for a better role, and a better paycheck on CSI Miami. Rob Lowe left because of creative and contract issues. he wanted a raise, and they wouldn't give it to him. He did however come back for the 7th and last season.
I always love the pacing of the dialogue on this show. It didn't matter what they were talking about, but the walking and rapid fire talking was a Sorkin staple.
..well it actually started out as a show about Sam, then Martin showed up and everyone 4got there was a Sam..... things happen the way they are supposed to..........even though they should have make Ainsley a regular. wasnt the same after she, Sam, and Sorkin left, but it was still damn good pull my box set out whenever im at my other place.......priceless.
I really loved her playing that character. I thought I loved her, but I watched her playing another role and I didn't like her. It was her playing this character.
@kation Well considering CSI Miami was giving her a much bigger salary AND she would be the lead actress rather than being a recurring star on the West Wing, I think it's understandable why she chose a job with a bigger income.
It's completely understandable and the smart decision at the time. Wasn't a good long term career move though. WW would have opened a lot more doors for her overall. But she couldn't really have known that.
Aaron Sorkin is a modern times Shakespeare. Don't you hear how the dialogue flows like music, or sounds like a ping pong match of the quickest wit ? These characters are the smartest people in the world. They can talk about extremely complex subjects, they often explain them to each other for the viewer's benefit, but they can also convey whole conversations with not even a sentence : "Good. Good. Yeah, no. That's your inferiority complex speaking, not reality. People insidenthr Beltway ARE average Americans. They're not some special independent species. Or perchance do you think erudite and intelligent people are inherently snobs just because they can speak well and think thoughts through to their logical conclusion?
It's kind of the mirror image of when Donna manipulated him into showing off for her friend by checking with his FBI contacts about a family member. Then he realizes and scolds her for thinking he was that kind of person. Despite having just shown he is that kind of person. (I don't respect Sam very much. But at least this time was a funny version.)
"The West Wing" needed way more Ainsley Hays in it. I loved her character.
Check The Best of Wives and The Best of Women by DeborahSampson1776 on the website ‘Archive of Our Own’.

Sam and Ainsley really should’ve been an item. Their witty banter and their chemistry was incredible.
Just imagine Sam as president and Ainsley as First Lady. And then two terms later, president Hayes and First Gentleman Seaborn! Haha
Would've been too much like James Carville and Mary Matalin.
50 bucks says that if the show is ever brought back again, it'll have Sam as president and Ainsley as his wife.
