This specific study defined an entire time of my life lol. I used to play this, incessantly. I still "air finger" and hum this all the time lol. It's a perfect exercise for developing control over partials, plus, ya gotta love when the study/practice piece is as melodic and musical as this one.
I started playing trumpet in 1976 played thru Jr High, High School and Finally College. I have not seriously played in over 35 years. I am starting very slow on this excercise and will build speed. Thank you for taking the time to put these up. Im a bit intimidated getting back in but hopefully with an hour or two so a day for the next year will get me back to at least being respectable. There are some really bad sounds coming out of my Strad right now.
I started playing again at age 62 after a 43-year lay off. I'm now 77 and sounding pretty damn good! I hope your comeback is going well. You can't go wrong with a strad, but it's not my main horn now. I only buy used, with one exception: my doubler's flugel from Carol Brass, very reasonably priced and sounds great.
Just stumbled on this as I've been practicing the first study for a college wind ensemble audition... Found it very helpful that you suggested exercises to help with specific passages!
you may not remember me commenting on a past video of yours, but I mentioned that I didn't know if I could play this or not. I ended up practicing hard like you told me to, and I Made region AND advanced to 5a area!!!
Trumpet Master Classes with Dr. Brian Shook it feels so great definitely. I'm working so hard now to make the all state band, it's unlikely I will make it, but it is certainly possible!
I realized this is the song that my lessons teacher made me play and it gave me chills because I didn't like playing it lol. Like its nice and all but practicing wasn't a priority for me since band was just a hobby (don't as why I did lessons cuz idk why it took me so long to quit) so it became a pain...
Time to dip into the Arban book again. I forgot how lyrical and melodic his technical exercises were; very operatic. That said, I'm sick of the ubiquitous "Carnival of Venice."
I used to have the same challenges until my teacher introduced me to Lip Bends and Pedal Tones. It takes several months to work up the muscles using these exercises, but it is worth it. Tongue Arch is also important. Check out these videos: Lip Bends: th-cam.com/video/1oBnwF2QhO0/w-d-xo.html Pedal Tones: th-cam.com/video/o2Z4cWWE_Vk/w-d-xo.html Tongue Arch: th-cam.com/video/zov7sdjFi6k/w-d-xo.html Good luck! Let me know how it goes!
I'm playing this for all state band this year and this video is helping me out a lot. My audition is actually the 26th of this month and im cracking down. Anyways thanks for this video, it was much needed.
+Juan Sanchez For me, it took about 3 weeks to be ready to record. You may use the alternate fingering if it makes T easier for you, as long as the timbre (and intonation) doesn't change significantly.

Awesome! Congratulations! Doesn't it feel great for all that hard work to pay off?!

I remember practicing this stuff over and over again down in the basement. That was a long time ago.

Commentary too good - I had to keep pausing the video👌👌👌
As a bowed string player there are wonderful analogies between blowing and bowing.
This is effin' hard..
Thanks very beautiful and useful videos that help us in our life as trumpeters

Beautiful and extremely useful, thanks for the pearls of advice.
the other 2 etudes don't actually sound overly difficult, its this one thats the bitch to play
How exactly do I achieve that beautiful sound?
I feel as if I still sound like a duck compared to this light, and noticeably rich tone.
How do you play the high notes without struggling and keep on playing throughout the music.

Thank you very much! I will start to practice on these.
If new to Arbans complete and only playing trumpet for 12 months, would you recommend starting at page 1 or is there a section you would recommend?
What have I gotten myself into...
Trumpet is a heavenly curse

Oh my goodnessss this is my allstate audition piece this year
Made this at first class of concervatory.
beautiful!
Beautiful! They say that Maynard practiced Arban up an octave, but certainly not with a more beautiful tone than you!
You're too kind. Thank you!
Wow inspiring.
THANK YOU!
Where is this in the book
Great playing. Congrats. Would you consider the A of the grupetto to be flat? (G, Ab, G, F#, G)
Where can I get this study book from?
Your local music store or anywhere online.
I'm a freshman and I had bought the book but I don't know what to study the most
Literally start at the beginning of the book and just practice fundamentals
Do you have an email?
Yes. Visit my website and you can email me there: www.brianshook.com
I look forward to hearing from you!
how long did it take to learn this study? and could an alternate fingering for c in the sixteenth triplets be helpful for quickly slurring the cgc ece
