    Ingenious process!! The heating and rapid quenching softens the metal making this possible. The gold electroplating at the end adds a very nice touch.

      @kshockstudios4121 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Quenching actually makes it harder. What should be done is annealing which is where u heat it up and let it cool completely by itself

    Hello i'm Pierre! Really nice work !! one question anyway : what's the name of the tool you use to put the ring on the ryobi drill? Some kinda mandrel or something ...I've never seen that. Sinon, BRAVO !

    • @highanddryful
      @highanddryful 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello Pierre The tool is known as an "Expanding Jam Chuck" It is made of class 2C rubber with a ratchet screw in the center. Place the ring snug on the rubber cone and lightly tighten the hex screw to expand the rubber cone. Never tighten to fiercely , all is required is a light snug turn of the screw.

    Beautiful. Pretty much exactly the same as me, except I don’t polish with steel wool. I clean it with a few brushes of steel wool #000 but I buff with a manicure buffing block. Six of one... and that phrase.
    Beautiful work.

    Thanks for making this. Very nicely done. I have a few comments/questions.
    First, I like your hydraulic press - was that a “home brew” job?
    I also like the look of that arbor press... what brand? Seems better made than a lot of them I see, but maybe I’m wrong about that.
    Finally, I thought the music was cool... who is that? Or is it generic “stock” music?
    Thanks again for the video.

    I don't understand why you heat up the ring and then quench it. Doesn't that make the metal harder and more prone to cracking?

    • @evangelian2653
      @evangelian2653 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Mr. Cat silver work hardens as you work it and heating it sofends it again
      quenching it is just for convenience. It will be just as soft if you let it cool down by itself

    Question: I notice on a lot of rings the symmetry is off and one side can wider then the other (due to sizing). Is there a technique to create one uniform ring without over reducing and creating a over worked ring?

    • @evangelian2653
      @evangelian2653 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Doom Punk the problem is you stretch the hole side of the ring alot more than the reed side so it becomes thinner. Nothing you can do about that if you want to keep the inside detail. Some ring makers make the inside straight and leave the outside angled. Others prefer to straighten the outside but leave the taper on the inside. Personal preference.

    Best method if you have all those tool maybe (even then its debatable). Otherwise use a drill to tap out the middle, a file to sand the edges, a $15 ring mandrel, a $10 dollar nylon hammer and 10 minutes of elbow grease and BAM! You made a ring. I think this method takes a lot more time than the "manual" method too.

Many of them actually explain the process, as compared to your "Best method" with the boring music and no explanation. Besides that how many of us have such an impressive work shop with those excellent tools? Better to have titled your video; a tour of my professional coin ring making equipment workshop.

      Hey now. It is actually a pretty well built video compared to some others. Its explicit in the steps at least. Like the amount of annealing that needs to be done and when. He shows the tools and methods of work that are pretty much best practice. I watched that vid and except for the reverse electroplating thing he seems to do at the end that's almost the exact method I've arrived at for making my rings. Sometimes though I use a brass brush on a dremel to clean off the firescale instead of the drill / mandrel with steel wool. I still haven't settled on any one permanent way of doing anything because I'm relatively new and experimenting along the way.
