Kevin’s criticism is on spot! Pity the owners were so overly self-confident and complacent about their own ideas and “design skills”. Not to speak about economising on that temporary cladding of the roof, which actually led to their neighbours’ flats being damaged! That is downright egocentric and irresponsible. They can count themselves lucky they weren’t sued.
Wow what a wasted opportunity, that could have been a really special penthouse if they had kept their interior design in keeping with the building's art deco history. Instead they blunted the beauty of the solarium and created rooms that looked like offices from the 1980s. What a pity.
Selfish people, making a call not to cover the site which means they decided to risk flooding the neighbors. They did this to save money, later we learn they are adding thousands of pounds in alterations to the design.
such self centered people. they knew they would damage their neighboors homes, having no shame to say they prefer to pay their damages than just protect the roof from rain because its cheaper to do so but have no problem paying for a whole new and unnecessary light system. no respect for those around them.
Exactly was going to comment. No problem spending in last minute changing and considering whether is cheaper to reconstruct, And their house all finished and the redecoration at neighbors not done. Ugly people.
Jeez, this episode made me so anxious I had to fast forward through it. Those poor elderly neighbors! And I'm sure they're delighted to have to live with reconstruction happening INSIDE their homes.
@@zh6636Nah, it's a matter of taste, the stainless steel looks right out of a 90's office building. Kevin calling the winding stairs "art deco" must have been wishfull thinking. The terrace and the view is nice though.
There are a few things I’ve learned from binge watching GD: - hire professionals for PM, architect and contractors - detail the plans beforehand to the degree that all are on the same page - fixate the materials and plan them carefully (durability, insulation, moisture absorption etc) - plan for safety: add at least 30% on top of the budget and schedule to have wiggle room (but don’t tell anyone, especially: see next point!) - keep your wife as far away as possible from the building process as she will make changes without regard to plans, timetables or budgets - sometimes even feasibility - in general: don’t replan major features during the process: think carefully about what you want upfront and stick to those points, smaller adjustments are ok - but to many will pile up Of cause you can’t get everything perfectly, but these seem to be the big ones.
Many of these high end structures fall flat because the owners refuse to hire professionals to do interior design. This is a case in point. The owners have a busy collection of mismatched furniture that makes a dramatic structure look like a tag sale.
Again, having just seen the plans so far, it seems like they are giving the best, expansive, views to the rooms in which they will spend the least amount of waking hours - the bedrooms, leaving the living space to a very nice but very hemmed in view. Maybe they can't get to a patio area from that front existing part.
I agree with Kevin that an architect would have been better . The money spent on building changes would have been less . Actually I froze at the thought of what it would cost me having an architect to help me with my design but, it was an amazing experience because he was in tune to my design and we came out with more and better ideas that I agreed with . Today people are more worried about the price of an architect than the cost of building. Hey,I had very little money and he designed the house larger within the same space and with all my wife's and my ideas and more. The money was well spent and it cost less to build
What a couple of brats! I’m amazed this project failed to require soundproofing, reinforcement and waterproofing of the units below before any construction began. Also, it could have stipulated all demolition to be done with minimal noise and during specific and limited time of day.
Tacky is an understatement. When changes are being made after work has started, this build is definitely a disaster. As for their poor neighbours, these two are so ignorant to their discomfort and are arrogant. Like the saying goes, “ Money talks and BS walks”….
Why didn't they set the design in from the edge of the roof and then attach fencing around the build, instead of top to bottom scaffolding? None of the deck areas need to extend out to the edge of the roof for the view.
They seem like awful people (complete disregard for neighbors) who ended up with an awful space (tacky and chopped up!). People with money are the worst, most arrogant people.
Wow - I know it's their home, but their arrogance and complete dismissal of their neighbors is shocking. James is a complete jerk. I hope they charge them triple with all the lack of preparation. How entitled is anyone to expect hard working people to completely destroy and reconstruct their work? They are not able to communicate with one another - I give their marriage a year and the place will be on the market soon after. I'm glad I'm not their neighbor and they should be as well...lol.
Twenty years on, I read that Bournemouth has had serious decline and I find it hard to believe that woman would still be living there these days! lol. In fact, I would be amazed if they made it to the 2010s together...!
Such a poor taste! Everything was a wasted opportunity. And they switched the library for two chairs! I think I've never seen Kevin so rightfully disappointed. Not even with the pump station couple.
What kinds of people decides to gamble major damage to OTHER peoples properties to save on the financial cost to prevent that damage and THEN turns around and adds on expenditures to please their WHIMS immediately afterwards!?!? The initial space was wonderful....The engineering efforts of the contractors AMAZING. But the attitudes of the homeowners is appalling. No apparent concerns for the imposition placed on their neighbors patience and the promises THEY made to those neighbors to get permission to even start the project.... Takes away from the enjoyment of the results.
jfc... If I were the contractor, I'd have accepted a "fixed price", sure, but also with a stipulation that the fixed price would be for the design at the moment the contact was signed. You can't have some Balkan import bride on site constantly changing the locations of windows and ceilings, that's madness.
Kevin has way more faith in the 'abilities' of architects than in truth they deserve. All those hideous new buildings we see daily started as a blank sheet of paper. ALL of them.
Definitely has an amateur architect feel. Space is not well utilized, chopped up in strange and inefficient ways (aside from dining room, window wall and deck). Finish materials look cheap and dated. Black countertops and dark finished wood cupboards look straight out of the 1980s.
How obnoxious, delusional, selfish, spoilt and expensive can one woman be. Perfect example would be this woman no care in the world for financial awareness and construction deadlines. Going off plan and adding so many unnecessary rooms and making costly changes.

The guy is so arrogant. He didn’t care about those elderly people. Good on Kevin for being honest.
Hard to watch him smile and shrug about the damage caused by his being cheap. Horrible.
From the first, all I could thik about was the poor residents in the building having to suffer through the build above them. Thanks for sharing.

Love your show! This was another great episode. I hope that the newer shows like this follow the style of Grad Designs. 🙂👍
Kevin saying he's seen far worst was total burn.🔥🔥🔥 They should have gotten an architect. The place looks dated and confused.
It looks dated because it was filmed 20 years ago
@@zh6636 I watched it 20 years ago and it looked eclectic then.

Don’t forget this video is from early 2000s… it looks ugly now but that was very trendy at the time
they had just moved in - I doubt it stayed that way....but given what they had, I hope they hired an interior designer for the longer term.
Early 2000s casino/cruiseship nightmare house.

The fact alone that he bought the penthouse without the wife's approval speaks volumes. What a bunch of egocentric people
Video only has left audio channel, right ear of headphones is dead silent
I started off liking them for their bravery on taking on such a project and ended up disliking them for their arrogance.
I think it would look even better with sound.

Tacky asf. 😬 Looks like a seafood theme restaurant. 🦑🦐🐠🦀🍽 Not everybody with money have taste. 🙀
Agreed.

Ahh....Bournemouth, I studied here. fond memories of this place.
what an annoying couple in all ways. I hope they enjoy their home when the storms roll in.
On behalf of all Germans I would like to apologise for her accent 😂

Probably the worst conversion I've seen on grand designs
A bit Obnoxious especially him
he was quite happy to have saved the 30k at the expense of the neighbor ceiling leaking water. A real snake. And they built a horrible flat btw...

I really like this one, absolutely stunning!
Well… Katrin is. Not sure about the home.

Hire a designer people
Very impressiv transformation, nice design 🌞👍
I hope they pay for the water damage to neighbors apartments. How terrible they were to not protect the roof

My goodness this couple’s so many changes is so selfish
The cow skin chairsxare awful
This was a bit cringe worthy... All the wasted potential, angry neighbours, money wasted. SHOULD have hired an architect
A fool and his money are soon parted. I wonder if they are still married?

Poor design, poor taste, it doesn’t make justice to the view. Stubborn owners.
They should have invited them over for a get together. That might have soften the annoyance!
My eyes hurt :D
Shame of the clasic building underneath! Don’t like the contrast of old and new at all! 😢
Can't believe how awful this turned out
Homebuilderzillas.
Uh, estos dos no habrán durado nada. Que pesados!
Awful design, awful people. I haven't seen Kevin so dismissive as he is here, understandably so.
