      because a comment may challenge a premise, it doesn't make the comment negative, nor the viewer simple minded.

    I am proof it works. I've been watching a similar channel and yours for a total of 10 years. I didn't believe it was possible either, but a few years ago after my parents passed (I'd been living with them, and caring for them), I took a chance and started propagating plants a little at a time on a backyard area no larger than 30'x4'. One example, I got a non-patented hydrangea, and took approximately 100 cuttings over two years and have propagated those plants too. I also have bought arborvitae at the end of the summer and propagated from those cheap trees. I got at least 100 starts from one tree. I can turn them for $6-7 a plant. I plan to start selling next year, and I have about 3,000 plants to start out. This has all been in my spare time, no heavy lifting, and some soil, pots, and fertilizer. I'm 63. I don't have a greenhouse. It's my retirement business. You just have to be creative and a little crazy plant lady. All thanks to you and the other guy...Mike n Mike. 💜 ...oh, I live in Missouri.

    Mike I'm with you. My thing is for example. I drove by a ladies house that had these great Japanese irises. I live near her and had noticed they weren't blooming as well because they were compact. So I pull up and tell here they have gotten to compact and if she would let me me I would separate them and make them go all out again all I want is the plants I remove. 3 hours later I have the garden dug up plants separated and 3 50 gallon bags full of plants. Long story short. I planted me a small patch put the rest in #1 pots and sold then for 5 bucks a peice at a local flee market. 1200 dollars less than 8 hours work and cost involved was 66 cents per pot.

    Keep going Mike, you’re doing great! You’re so right. I closed a successful retail business to go full time here at my backyard nursery. Did I mention I will turn 62 this year. I’ve got around 4500 plants on roughly half and acre. No greenhouse. No high tunnel. No employees. My first sale was strawberry plants that I started from runners last year. Sold $1500 in one day so far. My total cost for them was under $50. I know of thousands of small growers who are successful. It’s a state of mind. That’s why dreams put into action are so important. Thank you for everything you do and share with us.

    Good video to address these issues. People can start where they are with available space they have. Love how you've built your buisness. you could start small and grow as you go.
    I've recently discovered using plastic milk jugs like it's own greenhouse to start plants indoors or outdoors. Recycle plastic containers, bird seed, pet food bags like grow bags, garbage bags even, buckets, cardboard boxes ect.
    Instead of everyone talking about climate change, we should all plant a tree or a forest. It's nature's gift and design to use carbon dioxide and give us oxygen in return. Planting trees are the best thing we could ever do for our climate, wildlife and ourselves. -John's wife

    Thanks to you, I got hooked on plant propagation as a hobby last year. It still is. Neighbors offered to buy some of my hydrangeas as they liked them. Then, friends of theirs wanted to buy more. By fall whatever rooted cuttings I kept for myself, the rest were sold.
    I won’t make a business out of this as it’s strictly a hobby. But now I have people (friends of friends of neighbors) calling asking if I’ll have more hydrangeas this year.
    And I kept it simple. Make my own pots out of plastic bottles/containers I find thrown on the street. My growing media is whatever gravel, sand, moss, etc… I pick from around.
    It’s fun. But this year will keep more of my rooted cuttings for my own landscape. That was the original idea anyways :)
    Thanks for all you do!

    Mike, I’m new to your videos, and LOVE LOVE LOVE each & every one of them! You’re so straightforward and considerate when explaining the “how to’s” of planting, propagation and selling for money. Even the way you addressed negative comments was encouraging.
    Anyways, I’m 62, retired and disabled, and just planting my first veggie garden, to pass the days. Totally out of my comfort zone! But you have taught me so much with your videos, it’s now more than just a way to pass time. Now it’s a passion! I even propagated a blueberry plant. I spent $15.00 on it at Lowes. A branch broke off when I brought it home. I stuck it in the ground to see what happened. Later I saw your video and slapped my head! I should have used root stimulator!!! However the silly thing is putting on a new shoot from the top of it. If I can I want to sell it & get my $15.00 back! You’re AMAZING!
    Now, I’m thinking about selling cedar trees. They’re growing wild all over the place. A few months back, I told my daughter that we should dig them up and replant them where they would get more sunshine, water and fertilizer and they’d take off. They’re just beautiful trees, but not growing fast. The question then was, “Then what?” I shrugged my shoulders. NOW that I’ve seen your video on selling them, I’m thinking I could sell them! What a wonderful idea you gave me! Thanks for your contagious enthusiasm!

    • @MikeKincaid79
      @MikeKincaid79  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      So cool Beth! Sounds like you're on your way. I've done the same thing with cedar trees and they're valuable trees. One year I potted up a random cedar tree at my place and put it in the hoop house. Then a guy came out to my place to put gutters on my shop and noticed the cedar tree. He paid me 10 bucks for a little tree I had just potted up and It wasn't even for sale. That's how easy it is.

    Great video Mike. Some people want everything handed to them. I seriously thought about doing this but I have other projects on my plate right now. I have followed your propagation videos and have successfully grown a cutting of a rose my daughter gave to my wife and a pink valerian that the bees and butterflies love. I love all the free stuff I get from Craigslist, too. There aren't a lot of free pots right near me, right now, but I did set up a search and I get notified when a listing comes up.
    Update: I posted in a local Facebook gardening group that I was looking for nursery pots. 3 people responded and I now have all the pots I need and the best part is they were all FREE! Thanks Mike

    Thanks again Mike. I am working through some issues to get my Nursery rolling. Right now I only have about 1/8 of an acre to work on, but have figure that there is enough room for at least 5,000 1 gallon pots along with some designated propagation areas and compost and soil storage. My biggest challenge is working out time to work on it. I have tested the waters with a couple ads and each one has had some success. Enough to prove the concept. I continue to do something each day, even if it means sowing seeds in trays at midnight. I love watching your videos and they help inspire me to keep going and keep experimenting.

      Hey Michael, I grow on around a quarter acre and I have alot of structures on the property so theres really only around and eighth acre of useable are for me too and what I've found is the best way to do things is, with larger plants like figs I grow them in the ground and I take cuttings and use solo cups and than I sell the rooted cuttings as plants and that way the bigger plants grow really big from being in the ground and produce hundreds of new plants a year per a single fig tree and those figs you can sell for $10 a plant and it's a good deal for you and the buyer but the main crop I grow is alpine strawberries which are clumping and produce yellow amazing tasting and fragrant strawberries and one single strawberry plant will clump into 25 plants every six months and they get hundreds of flowers on the clumped plants and so I started with $10 of alpine strawberry seeds and 99% germinated and I divided the seedlings into solo cups to let them get somewhat big so I could transplant them in the ground and I started off planting them about a foot apart but they dont need that much space and leaving that much space leaves room for weeds to grow but from those seeds I got around 200 plants and I decided to post on Facebook the plants for for sale for $2 a piece and in only a day, so many people wanted them I didn't have enough to sell so I set aside my 50 best looking plants to plant in my garden and sold the rest and in 6 months those 50 plants clumped and became around 1200 plants that needed to be separated so that they could each clump up in less than 6 months again each becoming another 25 plants per a single plant I started with and I sell them when their in a clump of 25 with 200+ flowers/fruit on them for only $5 a piece and it's like an infinite money source and not only that I've found that theres no other plant that people want to buy more than strawberrys cause they can be grown In Lil to no space or in containers or in the ground and they do amazing but not only that 99% of people have never heard of alpine strawberries so everyone wants them plus they taste and smell way better than normal strawberries and yield hundreds of times the berries in a season per plant that a garden strawberry would and also I started when I was 17 and now I'm 22 and I had taken I huge break from my garden/farm because of stresses of life like deaths in the family and having trouble paying the mortgage on our house making me worry I was gonna lose the farm but last year I got back into it better than ever before and in the last 6 months I've done more than I did in the last few years and I have over 10,000 strawberry plants now and I had went years without needing or watering and let tons die and if I didnt move them like 8 months ago than alot more would've been killed by the weeds which were completely engulfing the strawberry plants and now I've moved all but like a hundred plants and covered my old strawberry beds in plastic to kill the weeds for Good and I had made a super nice looking landscaped area before moving the strawberrys so now I have this perfect ground cover area with all sorts of berries growing and figs and the ground cover is all strawberry plants planted close enough that they fully fill the area like a carpet to where no weeds can grow beetween them like before and it looks absolutely amazing with perfectly contouring Lil trails beetween the strawberrys and along the trails theres raspberry plants and snowbank white black berrys and Logan berries and cherry guavas and hardy kiwis and I have probably 20 different varieties of raspberries and I get them litterily all times of the year but in the rainy season the berries never really ripen fully cause they get moldy from the rain before they ripen but my garden this year is like no garden I've ever seen and I couldnt be any happier with it and the strawberry plants all started flowing after transplanting them to the better area with no weeds and so I already have tons of berries and the plants all look healthier than ever right now and everyone who sees it compliments me and I already have had people telling me they want to buy strawberry plants once I'm selling them again and I dont plant on selling them till my whole property is covered in strawberry plants and when I'm at that point I'm going to take the best plants and breed them so that my seeds will get better and better and the plants being baught will keep being replaced by better and better plants!

    • @GoldenBoy-et6of
      @GoldenBoy-et6of 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Oh yeah also I have 7 alpine varieties at the moment and the combo of those produce fruit all year and the rain doesnt ruin them but it makes them taste like apples so their not very good during the rainy parts of the year but the drier parts of the year their absolutely amazing! And I ordered over 20 different rare varieties that got lost in the mail like 6 months ago other wise I would already have nearly 30 alpine strawberry varieties but instead I still only have the 7 I started with but I plan to order the seeds again once they are in stock!

    Yeah, Mike. It's like when I start tomato plants indoors and can't get them outside because the temps are too cold. The plants get cut back to keep them under the lighting and the cuttings go into little 8oz drinking cups to be rooted. Well, twenty cups later it's finally time to get my larger plants into the garden and then I give away the best rooted cuttings and plant the remainder in empty spots.
    Those rooted cuttings could be sold and that's what many people will do. The complainers you spoke about would rather burn that bridge when they come to it rather than simply crossing the bridge, lol.

    Hey Mike, I have been watching your videos for a few years now and I have learned SO MUCH from your channel. I have really gotten into propagation and have had quite a bit of success especially in the year or so after much trial and error. I don’t sell what I grow and really I don’t want to I think it would ruin it for me. I do it because I love it and it is satisfying. When I give a friend or family member something I grew and babied from a little cutting it means so much more than just picking it up at a store for $10. And then to see it years later big and mature in the landscape it really makes me proud to know I created that. No matter what you do there is always going to be negative people dumping on it you have to just walk right past Debbie Downer. Keep up the great videos and don’t change a thing. I know what you say works I have proved it many times

      I am kind of like you i love plants and i have a plant that is a cutting of a 70 year old Hoya that i have gotten 8-9 cuttings off of so far, and more to come. I give it to people as gifts.. the arboretum has them too they are near 30-50$ for just a 5" tall cutting in a 3"pot.. i give away a 12 to 24 inch plant in a 5"square pot with hand made bamboo lattice for it to grow up on.. i also found that it is quite satisfying to find out that my near by nursery is willing to give me money for well done plants. the knowing that MY plant will live on with so many copies of itself out in the world and be handed down because they can live that long is what keeps me going. you take pride in your work and that is good but don't be scared to get payed for your works of art they are most likely worth it.

      It is not that I am afraid to get paid for my work. For me when money gets involved I get REAL SERIOUS about it. Now I propagate things I want to when I want to. If I made it about making money I would turn it into what makes the most money what are the profit margins blah blah blah. I get really business minded when money is involved and now I do it for the love of doing it.

    I tried a load of fruit seeds last year with the idea of planting out an acre or so in the future. Potted on the seedlings last week in 2L pop bottles sourced from a mate who drinks gallons of lemonade. I used a mix of native soil, compost and perlite, all of which I had to hand. I know folk say not to grow fruit from seed as you are not sure what you will get, but I have not had to invest any money and could potentially have a few hundred trees in a few years. I grow comfrey to make my own fertilizer and make compost. Yes, I am doing this as the land is available, but folk can definitely do something on a small scale without spending a fortune.

    Lowe’s here puts out the pots people bring back for recycling for free. I put out all my extra veggies with a coffee can and let people make a donation if they want. The only concern I would have selling plants online would be get a live plant license and getting approved by each state. Some people get around this by just selling cuttings.

    You're clearly a passionate person.
    I understand your frustration with the people who think everything is impossible without first having this or that, but you're talking to a wall. Those people are so scared of the first step, the commitment, whatever, that they have shut out any possible way to generate revenue other than their 9-5 grind.
    Anyone with an ounce of determination and creativity can start building a nursery or just transplant some trees. Hell, take some cuttings when you get new growth and start a new generation.

    Absolutely true! When something seems overwhelming, we need to concentrate on the baby steps which set the wheels of success in motion. The $500 per hour is absolutely possible. Although, it will not happen every hour and that's where a lot of folks fall off the wagon... Keep up the good work, Mike...

      It would be interesting to see just how far a person could take this. I sit here with a calculator and imagine what it would take to actually keep that going for 40 hours a week. That would be $80,000 a month. It would take a tremendous amount of work, advertising, and ingenuity, plus a little help from my wife and kids. I wonder if it's possible. Even if the in pocket at the end of the month was just $20,000. Winner winner chicken dinner!

    • @michaelheyward7668
      @michaelheyward7668 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@MikeKincaid79 , Go for it buddy! The imagination can accomplish overwhelming odds if only we put it to use. 80K per month would be awesome. But as you stated above, it would take a lot of work. Of course, space to store the finished product may be a limiting factor for others however, if you are like me, space isn't an issue. I'm looking at trying to pop out 120K per acre. Keep running the calculator and see what else you come up with! All the best...

    Most of us (at least I am) are here to learn and be inspired, not to copy and Naysay. People will always find the negative in everything, and I feel sad for them. After your last video I did one simple google search and found a source for seedling trees (not as good of a deal as you got, but still less than $1.50 per tree). While watching this, simple Facebook marketplace search came up with 5 people in a 30 mile radius with pots. Am I totally jealous of everything you’ve got going on? Absolutely! I also know I’m just getting started and you’ve been doing it for years. One day, I know I’ll be where you are no matter how daunting it looks right now.

    Hey great video. I watched the first one and it was really interested. I just turned 25 and started doing this myself last year. Living in an apartment there are still ways to do this people! metal rack, grow lights, and I just this week picked up a grow tent since I"m doing it in my room since I have roommates! It really doesn't take much besides maybe some patience. And don't forget now is the time you can go to a nursery pick up plants, and even resell them when they get a bit bigger. I'm working with tomato plants, a bunch of habanero seedlings, monstera seeds I just sowed, I have asclepias seedlings in my fridge for cold stratification right now, I just picked up a couple succulents that I can resell when they get bigger if I want to. I have coneflowers germinating, a mexican buckeye that I just saw the seed opened and I need to get it repotted so it can germinate. I have all sorts of seeds. I'll admit growing inside has it's struggles since I have no porch really, but I just got a community garden plot for $95 for the year. Being in Texas I can move those plants to the garden plot from the grow tent and dig them up whenever I want to resell them. Is it instant cash, no? But am I giving value to any customer I have, you better believe it!

Just pick a plant that you love working with, see if there's a market in your area, set aside a small area in your yard for propagating and growing them, and start selling right out of your home.

    I'm retired and love gardening. Growing vegatables takes time and money. I found a way to make all the money I need to get supplies and have extra money for other things. I started propagating fig trees 3 years ago. I went from selling 20 to 40 to 60 and now this year it's going to be over a 100. If all the trees sold at my minimum which is $20 a tree thats $2000. But I also grow specialty fig trees that are worth from $50 to over a 100. And around half the trees I sell of those. So it's well over $2000. I planted 30 cuttings yesterday took me about 2 hours. At my minimum that would be $600. But half those trees will be going for $40 or more. Each cutting costs me less than $2 per plant that includes the soil and the pot. 90% of the trees I grow now are from my own trees so no money spent buying cuttings. I make my own fertilizer so its only costing me pennies. The rest of my time is spent advertising and shipping which is minimal. I've made a lot of new friends learned a lot about soil, fig trees and gardening more than I have in the last 40 years. Although I probably could make this into a small business I just want it as a hobby with benefits.

    • @MikeKincaid79
      @MikeKincaid79  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sounds like you've got a nice little setup there. Yeah, those figs can go for some serious money. I don't sell too many figs but I did sell a Black Madeira KK in a dixie cup (newly rooted) for $350 bucks a few years ago. Crazy.

    • @kicknadeadcat
      @kicknadeadcat 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MikeKincaid79 Are you kidding me. Someone paid $350? Was it an auction? I just ordered some black madeira KK. I've been selling figo preto so it was pretty similar. But people were asking for the black maderia. I just ordered 2 cuttings 1 tree I'll keep the other one ill sell. The one tree i sell will pay for the cuttings and then some. And hopefully by the end of the season I'll have enough to take a couple more cuttings.

    • @MikeKincaid79
      @MikeKincaid79  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yep, absolutely true, I couldn't believe it. It was an auction I had listed on Figbid. In fact, it was the little Black Madeira KK plant that I featured in the first packaging video I did about 3 or 4 years ago when I shipped it all the way to Connecticut. During that same auction someone else bid it up to $500 but then a day or 2 later he contacted me and said it was an accident. Kind of screwed up the auction and put a bad taste in my mouth for auctions. I know they work and I've sold them by auction several times but when someone begs you to take their name off and says it was an accident, what are you going to do? I'm a nice guy and not money hungry and I thought it was too much anyway. It just screws it up for the other people. Since that period of time a few years ago, it seems the price of BMKK has come down but it's still just about one of the hottest figs to get, and for good reason.

I am currently rooting nearly 200 green giants that are currently taking up less space than a 20in.by 20in piece of my back yard and can stay that way for a whole year while i find those free 1 gal. pots. Heck you could even get a bag of play sand leave it in the bag. Lay the bag flat cut the upside of the flat bag and BAM!!! you have a starter for rooting cuttings. Some people are so closed off from the realities we live in and because of this and the absents of some other key reality's is what keeps people from achieving what was already decided for them. Well got to get back to the makeshift green house and cut some Solo cups so I can start my garden veggies.

    Great video! I have gathered Sawtooth acorns and potted them for years. I enjoy seeing the change from acorn to tree. I also believe in planting for the future. Now i am thing of making money. Thanks Mike!

    Hi Mike. Awesome video.
    You can only plant seeds in those negative minds but they will always put up roadblocks. You can only try to help, at some stage they have to get off their asses, and help themselves. I am 65 soon.
    I am going to do this with plants I have available in my own garden.
    Plant barns also have free used pots and Autumn is a great time to start in NZ.
    Don't let the knockers knock you down. Keep safe 😃

      Hi Mike. How about changing the title to

      Yes, it's a sad state of affairs. Hopefully the sunshine I try to bring to the game will break through all the clouds.

    Love this video. Ty very much. Will you do a video on plant and tree details? Example: Hardiness zones for the Douglas fir, full pt shade or full sun and size growth. Also, I’m interested in laurels. Will you go through the differences in the laurel varieties. I’m interested in the English Laurel you propagated. Planting zones, evergreen, size growth and sun requirements. That would be really helpful for me. TY❤

    I started my garden 3 seasons ago and I have people asking me all the time if I will be selling my plant starts or harvest. I haven't yet but there is certainly a ton of interest from people in plants. A little time and effort goes a long ways. We are only limited by the limitations we place on ourselves.

    You can sometimes go down to a nursery and ask to buy a bunch of pots. I have had them to near bulk prices, similar to what they bought them for, because they weren't making a profit on them.

    Hi Mike - Do you clean or sterilize your pots? I'm just a home gardener, but often think about propagating plants for profit. (So happy I stumbled on your channel!)

    • @MikeKincaid79
      @MikeKincaid79  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Welcome to the family! I don't sterilize pots. If they're really dirty then I just spray them off with a hose.

      @@MikeKincaid79 I've read that it's important with used pots - even ones that I've used! But you're clearly having success without the bother. Thanks!

    Mike, have thought about interviewing some of these successful plant nurseries? The Native Plant nursery you spoke about in the vid would be interesting to learn more about. I'm new subscriber, haven't explored your channel enough yet to see whether you interview vids like that.
