Happy birthday. I have the same set. Take good care of it and keep the box in good condition and it will be worth a lot of money when you share them with your own children.
This was my very first piece of model railway and I will admit I love it so much! It’s been years since I first got it and it still runs good to this day
I love it that train sets are an international brotherhood, surpassing culture at large and integrating the clan of train nerd brethren. All hail brothers and sisters of the track, hail ye locomotivists.
I bought myself this very Flying Scotsman set (R1255) and I will receive it this Friday (22 January 2021) and I got some discount buying a second set so I bought the GWR Freight set as well (R1254). Already designed a layout with the two oval tracks and Track Pack A's that I will get with the two sets. This is my very first model railroad sets and I am VERY excited for it to arrive! Been watching your video a few times now to keep the excitement going and pass the time. It is quite expensive to have model railroading as a hobby in Namibia where I live but I have to start somewhere :) Thank you for the video and greetings from Namibia.
Great video ...The Bachmann controller you used is a very good one but never sold/given away in the train sets in the UK the controller Bachmann give you there sets over here in the UK is crappy and cheep like the Hornby one in fact the Bachmann controller in the UK does NOT even have a overload cut out on it so if you loco stops or stalls on the track there controller will keep pumping power to the motor until it kills it ...
Here is the odd thing about 00 As you said the scale is different but the track is actually HO Even if the Hornby model was modelled to 1/87 the Hornby track and also Peco track is still incorrect for British HO. Both Hornby and Peco have ties or sleepers closer together than is the case in the UK, the track is more akin to US track where the sleeper ie ties are closer together than on British Railways.
Thats a great point about the sleepers. Most likely was originally designed as a toy with ease of manufacturing in mind. Some guys hand lay their own track, maybe a more prototypical track would be a good seller?
Excellent review! Especially considering this is the first! Thanks I still can't make up my mind about getting the set or go for just the loco in Hornby Railways range.
Let’s face it. Locomotives pull a little bit of their brakes on sharp turns so in my opinion when it slows down on the turn is a pretty cool feature but I do get it does get dreadful but yeah not everyone would agree.
The trackmat thing was always a bit insulting... "hey kid, we know you can't draw a loop or see the image on the box, so heres a diagram." Set the track up however you want, it's your set.
Thank you for this! I really want to get into model trains and want an easy good set for my first one ever. I will get the set but replace the controller asap.
The wife bought me this set several years ago. I agree that the controller is poor construction. I set it up this past Christmas with some Christmas town buildings and people I found at a garage sale.
The humming is not interference. It is the PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) that the controller uses to control the motor in the train. Basically the same method a digital decoder uses to control the motor. The controller is better than the previous pure analogue controllers. You do not get any humming from the Bachmann controller, because it is pure analogue. I agree, there are better controllers out there, both PWM controllers and analog controllers.
I´ve watched a lot of gaugemaster combi controller videos, it is a UK made controller and i'm totally in love with the performance it offers, i'm thinking about to buy one to operate my flying scotsman, but i don't know if i can use it with an american bachmann wall adapter power supply ( Model: AC1601000, input: AC12OV 60Hz 24W Output: AC16V 1000mA 16 VA) , that's the problem, i don't want to damage it, or lose my money. Greetings from Colombia!
Im debating on the Flying Scotsman or Mallard train set but on hornby both of them are $325, though on amazon the flying scotsman is $200 so i might get that for christmas
Hi, I assume the controller from the box is purely a variable voltage controller and not current regulated. Your more expensive unit has probably some regulation. Also, I assume the engine and controller are not digitally controlled- is this correct ? Do they make the Flying Scotsman with digital control
Yes I have not used that cheap controller since filming that video. The Scotsman in the train set is DCC ready so a decoder/chip needs to be purchased separately and added.
Yes, it wont shock you one bit. Don't put any metal objects on the track that touch both rails at the same time like ornament hooks and screwdrivers, that will cause a short circuit.
Controller is definitely a piece of junk. Invest in a good one, or if you have a good one, use it. Nothing bad with the track with my set. Buy it if you so choose. Decision is ultimately yours.
The construction of trucks on passenger cars is cheep one piece construction including the Horn coupler. There is no way to convert couplers to standard Kadee couplers without major surgery. Very disappointed.
The track yes. Never used those Bachmann controllers. I don’t know what style you got by and how new/old it is. I in general do not trust those basic cheap controls for long term use just try it out to find out how it works.
Probably not. Not sure how he comes when handling delicate items so I cannot be the judge. The side rods and motion on the locomotive are quite delicate. Those can easily break. Even I am careful not to put too much pressure on them when handling the locomotive. Watch Sam's Trains video to help with your decision making too. He reviews the locomotive. th-cam.com/video/kscZK48dOxk/w-d-xo.html
Hello! Nice video! Wanted to know the size of the box because I keep finding different numbers on internet, if you could help me with that I'd be pleased
I grew up with Hornby trains in the 1960's as they were originally of good quality so natuarally I bought this Hornby Flying Scotsman train set for my Grandson in 2020. I have never seen such a heap of rubbish in my life, made in China and not fit for purpose. After it repeatedly broke (due to poor quality metal parts) I threw it at the wall and replaced it with one from the 1960's purchased off the internet. I would NEVER recommend Hornby every again.
Sorry to hear that you had got a lemon and I was taking a risk when I bought this set hoping I did not get stuck with one. Mine still runs well. That Hornby controller though is a piece of junk no joke! Quality control is not what is it used to be in many areas. Profit is the name of the game.
I literally yanked the wired straight outta the control and threw it in the bin! Joined the wire to my older but better control so I could still use the power track
Update: the engine is amazing, the coaches are splendidly detailed, but my bachmann controller is a pile of garbage. (It has a problem with sending high amounts of voltage at low setting on the controller itself) other than that; 100/10
I got this set for my 14th birthday yesterday
Very nice present. Hope you're having fun with it.
@Flanking-films hey i might be getting it for my b day soon, and i was wondering if it is loud.
I’m getting august 3rd!!!
Edit: it came early
Edit 2: the train came with a broken front bogey
Edit 3: returning it because the side rods broke
I got one too for my 31st birthday in honoring Flying Scotsman's 100th birthday
Happy birthday. I have the same set. Take good care of it and keep the box in good condition and it will be worth a lot of money when you share them with your own children.
I had an older model of this when I was really young, I had some great memories with this!
Happy 100th birthday Flying Scotsman!
Stunning set. Even though it has some minor faults, it's still a very great set to start with. Thanks for the video!

ordered this for like 250 euro, arrived yesterday, cant wait to open this on christmas day!
Well done and informative review, took care of all my questions about this set and more
It’s a fantastic classic train 🤩😍 albeit a little bit oversize in comparison to the the H0-scale layout and trains. Very good review 👍👌
I got one of these for my 10th Christmas in 2017 and I haven't even set it up yet=) so I'm motivated to set it up tonight
Cool! Please let me know how it works out.

Your layout looks brilliant, with only a short glimpse! Could we see more? Just found your layout, and very nice it is too!
Thanks. Go to my channel and I have more recent videos of it completed with much better scenery. That footage you saw of it was from 2019.

I'll buy this
Aww i want this set............... But it's so,so,SO expensive in mah country :(
are you... brazillian?
How long/ wide is that track please ?
The question on controller is it a TRUE analog or a PWM power unit. Could explain slow speed noise
This is my first set when i bought hornby
Wait what. I have that same exact remote. It came with my first train set 😅
Just curious, how many got it BADly delivered, super large box, NO packing material??????
I suppose the train cannot turn on normal radius tracks, or even small ? It's needs these larges ones ?
Was considering this set for my first one, other than the controller, a good set to start on?
Yes it is.
Hi, I assume the controller from the box is purely a variable voltage controller and not current regulated. Your more expensive unit has probably some regulation. Yes I have not used that cheap controller since filming that video. The Scotsman in the train set is DCC ready so a decoder/chip needs to be purchased separately and added.
Yet i didnt see anything on the set that makes the price make sense
Hello, nice review, but I have a question, is it ok to touch the track when the train is running? I’m deadly scared I’ll get shocked. Thanks
Yes, it wont shock you one bit. Don't put any metal objects on the track that touch both rails at the same time like ornament hooks and screwdrivers, that will cause a short circuit.
@@AndyMicoley1995 ok thank you
Hey uuh what happened if the controller button comes off?
You are using the Hornby new DC controller
Can you disconnect tracks itself?
I I have an old model of this hornby train 35 years old
Did this train set from Hornby come with a track mat?
Yes
I have this set and the remote has stopped working after a while
Couldn't you just hook the wires up to the power track instead of ruining the set?
I've got that model train set
So I saw a lot of 1-2 star rating on Amazon about that controller didn’t working, the track plastic was cheap, bad all, lost part….So such I buy it?
Controller is definitely a piece of junk. Invest in a good one, or if you have a good one, use it. Nothing bad with the track with my set. Buy it if you so choose. Decision is ultimately yours.
Ok thanks
Can anyone say how this train runs on Bachmann EZ track? Just wondering if it's compatible.
Yes it can run on Bachmann track
My best advice is throw that controller straight into the bin, they are rubbish
I really want to get American Bachmann what trains do u recommend I get because all I am use to is hornby
Bachmann is alright. They produce a lot of starter sets. it depends on what you are looking for specifically.
I don't need it I don't need it, I don't need it...
I NEED IT
All I got is just the train and the tracks
Did you do any lubricating before running ?
No. It’s already pre lubed.
Wait so the engine can move freely without the tender ?
I am guessing you mean it can be disconnected and ran without it?
The construction of trucks on passenger cars is cheep one piece construction including the Horn coupler. There is no way to convert couplers to standard Kadee couplers without major surgery. Very disappointed.
Can you convert this to DCC?
Yes. The locomotive is DCC ready
Would this work with bachmann controller and ez track?
Yes. OO runs on HO track. You can use a Bachmann controller if you wish.
Ok so I only collect Bachman and my controllers are the ones from those sets will it do well on those tracks and controls?
The track yes. Never used those Bachmann controllers. I don’t know what style you got by and how new/old it is. I in general do not trust those basic cheap controls for long term use just try it out to find out how it works.
