Because of some of your sketches, I had to listen to the entire video just to be sure you're actually serious. So now I'm 95% percent sure you're being serious. Good luck
Hello, my name's Craig, welcome to mah book. It contains many amusing stories, suitable for men and women of all ages. On the left you'll see some stories about women, and after that, some meer stories about women. Each one funnier, than the last, presumably. Thank you, for looking at mah book, I'd appreciate if you could buy a copy or two, as Rabbie at the publisher, has a messy divorce on, an needs yer dough.
Congratulations on your book! My only good story is about my Great Aunt Brenda. Her father was a banker in Thurso in Scotland, so they were comfortably well-off. She fell in love with the chauffer of some family friends, and when that was discovered, he was told to give her up or lose his job (and since he was very likely putting money toward his family, he gave her up). She was then married off to socially acceptable Whats-his-face Pierce-Jones, who turned out to be a drunk and a jerk. She finally had enough, and said "I'm leaving, but you're not getting a divorce, bye!". She went on to travel, get involved in archaeology (and I believe she left her notes to The British Museum). And my sister said that supposedly a gentleman in New York kept her picture on his piano...which his wife didn't care for much. There was a split between our grandfather and Brenda and their brother Duncan, and our family didn't know anything about her until after Grandpa died, when she got in contact. But apparently she knew people. who knew people, who kept her informed about our family...a very resourceful lady! I never met her as I've never travelled to Britain, but my mom, three brothers, and two sisters did. She was a five-foot, red-headed firecracker of a lady...when one of my sisters was visiting, Aunt Brenda wanted take her to see a particular painting at a grand building, which happened to be closed that day for a private event that a member of the Royal Family was attending. Needless to say, through the force of Hurricane Brenda, they got to see the painting. And the Royal lady smiled and waved at them. She was determined that after she died, there was no way in hell she was going back to Scotland, and she ended up being cremated and buried over here in Canada, with my dad, and later my mom with them. I wonder how Grandpa would have felt about her being buried in the same cemetary...Aunt Brenda was obviously o.k. with it.
Oh really? That's great, so I can go get it for my Kindle Fire, fantasting! I was worried it might not be! Thanks for the wonderful information! I will go preorder it right now!
I'm a historian, and I seriously identify with your lament about how historical records just... don't treat women and their stories as worth recording. I study ancient Rome, and the Romans were particularly dismissive of women. And too often modern historians maintain those biases. All this is to say, your book sounds wonderful and I can't wait to check it out.
Unfortunately I don't have a lot of information on most of my female ancestors. But I did have a grand aunt who was a nun and was training in Italy during WWII and spent a few years in Papa New Guinea before returning to Ireland.
This is wonderful. Elenore has a lovely voice as it is, so an audiobook narration by her seems like the perfect fit. ... although....a chapter or two with Craig's voice isn't going to be far from anyone's mind.
I really hope Julie D'Aubigny is featured as there are many life lessons to be learned from her. I'll be getting this book either way, but her inclusion would be the icing on the cake 🙂
I agree about the wallpaper! I saw it in the Bridgerton sketch and fell in love. Doesn't hurt that it suits Eleanor's coloring perfectly, either. ::chef's kiss!::
It actually seems to be available in both kindle and hardcover in the US for preorder. So yay! Americans can get the kindle version August 15 and the hardcover November 5.
Please keep us updated on the audiobook release! I read David McCullough’s Brave Companions years ago which featured Miriam Rothschild and Harriet Beecher Stowe. It’d be great to hear more historical portraits with your lovely humor. Signed, a white middle aged American male.
Despite not being published for another 3 months, Amazon UK says the book is currently #2,522 in Books, and amazingly it's #10 in Women in History! I am in Australia and apparently I am allowed to pre-order the book from Amazon AU, who rank the book as #1,685 in the Books category. (Therefore your book is nearly twice as popular in Australia as it is in the UK, right? Well done!)
Hope Craig is going to do a review. I'm not going to pre order I'll order a copy on publication from my fave little bookshop in Barnsley. Oh. Just like what you said I should.
Congratulations Eleanor it sounds fantastic. My Scottish soulmate (I’m an Aussie) she did her last show at Edinburgh Fringe in 2018 American Apocalypse by Pauline M Hynd, she was really smart, funny a Dundonian. She then wrote and recorded her vocals and guitar for her self produced album after her cancer diagnosis, she missed out on recording the vocals for one song due to the pandemic, so another vocalist with a similar voice did that with Pauline’s Daughter and Sister, as she died in 2021. Her musical collaborator Stephen Lee as they performed as The Onion Club she was a performance artist, an original Punk which remained in her heart, a fierce advocate for those without a voice and, she ran a club night and nurtured other younger musician’s by telling them that she had already booked them in to headline a gig, so they couldn’t say no. She was also the Artistic Director of The Dundee Repertory Theatre. The Album was finished and launched 1 year ago at The Church in Dundee on 28/04/23 which I flew over for. The album has since been picked up by Rubber Taxi Records In Glasgow 2 months ago. The album is called ‘My Mother Is Really Out There Travelling In The Light’ her Daughter named it and did the artwork for the album cover as a 3rd generation of artists, named for a quote from Rikki Lee Jones which is played over track The Kingdom about the plight of the Palestinians. Not an advertisement but a little bit about a strong, independent, very funny Woman. I’m going to buy it for myself as I love history and most of my friend’s are women so I will get some copies for them, and one of my male mates of nearly 30yrs he loves audio books and history.
Congratulations on this accomplishment. I'm hoping your namesake 'of Aquitaine' as well as 'The Maid' are included as they're two women I greatly admire, especially Joan. Good luck on sales and I'll keep my eyes open here in the States.
Before I saw the photo of the book cover, I thought your book was going to be "Tales of Craig" or something. Congratulations! Looking forward to reading your book!
My great, great, great grandmother was called Jane Russel and she was a dairymaid from Linlithgow in Lanarkshire. She married a farmer called Ebenezer and in 1839 they emigrated to New South Wales on an assisted passage. I think it was during the Clearances. They had 5 children under the age of 10 and Jane was pregnant with their 6th child who was born at sea during the voyage. I can't imagine how scary it must have been to go to a strange land so far away whilst having all those small children to care for. The voyage took 5 months during which she gave birth in the steerable section of the ship. No privacy, no drugs, no fresh air. I don't have any more details about her other than the family did well there. Defender's obituary says he owned a good size farm and was much liked by his employees and neighbours. I'm happy Jane had a comfortable life. I think she was a very hard and resourceful woman. One of many who lived and died in obscurity but is now known to me as a hero.
Well, now you've done it. My wife and I are bickering over who gets to read you book first. We're both excited to read it, it'll be at the top of our summer reading stacks... right under a large pitcher of sangria. Also, Amazon here in the US has it up for pre-order.
🤍🌟Can't wait for the audio book! I'm sure the print version will be phenomenal, but hearing it read by Eleanor will be simply perfect. Can't wait! Congratulations on your first book and on such an inspirational and important topic. Good on you!🌟🤍
Finished the book last night. Wonderful job, Eleanor! Strikes the right balance of interesting history, with asides, and in context. from various eras and cultures. Very readable, which is important in not only drawing the reader in, but keeping them engaged. Made me think about the unsung women that I'm aware of - nobody earth-shattering, but they did their bit to make it a better place. For example, in my family, my great-aunt (or grand-aunt) was the first Home Demonstration Agent working for the State Agricultural Extension Service. Of the seven kids in her farm family, she was one of six who went to College. She graduated in 1916, and in 1917, went to work as an Agent to help families in rural Southern Oregon with setting up their houses and arranging them, advising them on gardens, canning, preserving food, the importance of stuff like clean water and food. Then she went to area high schools in the cities and worked with Home Economics teachers and set up a Hot Lunch program for their schools that would involve the teachers and Home Ec students to provide hot food for lunches. She traveled across the country, and set up a similar Home program in the Bowery of New York City for immigrants, through Columbia University. And after that, back to the West Coast, developing a program in Santa Cruz, California, where she ended up. Evidently, she took seriously the adage, "Find a need and fill it."
Congratulations! Hope I get to read it or listen to it in the US! Quick Story: My wife's grandmother got divorced in the late 1930's. Divorce was very rare in the States at that time and especially in the southern states where she lived. She went to work to care for her daughter and lived with her mother. I'm too lazy for this to be a prank
@@EleanorMortonableYet you're not so lazy as to give up on writing a book.
The paradox of being Eleanor.
I tell you, the first half chapter of the best book ever written was written by me. 4 years ago.
But will Craig be voicing the audiobook?
Eleanor where do you stand on the “Shakespeare was really a woman” theory ?
Excellent work! Can't wait to hear Craig's review of it! He's the only one I trust! Congratulations from a fan in Toronto, Ontario, Canada!
I was going to ask for a Craig review as well. Sort of a chapter-by-chapter tour. 😁

I hope the inside book cover has that wallpaper pattern.
You can pre-order at Barnes and Noble in the US. Will be available 11/5/24, just in time for holiday shopping!
