I think of Hakanpaa as basically a TDL pickup. They knew he wouldn't play the whole season, but also have very little draft capital to get a big RHD at the deadline. I bet that it's uninsured and did this deliberately from the get-go.
Berube has sent a wake up call to McMann and Lilljegren. They both had less than stellar camps, and it's possible they thought they had spots pretty much locked up. McMann can bounce back, but I have less confidence in Timmy L. Shocked that they signed him to 3M x 2, huge mistake. Tougher to trade him now. If no trade available, they can put him on waivers, see if he clears. The 3M for a 7th d-man would scare off most teams. (Maybe that was part of the plan)
Jarnkrok and Hakanpaa are not eligible to play till Novemeber. That is at least 3 weeks for trade talks for Lilly. Teams will need a RD by then. McMann easily gets plenty of games with Pacioretty and Reaves in and out of lineup for maintenance/healthy scratch rest stops
If Liljegren does go on waivers and gets unclaimed the max they can bury in the minors is 1.2M. Unfortunately the remaining 1.8M still would count towards the cap. So this is probably not a good option.
@@marconion - yeah you make a good point. That 3M price tag really complicates a trade. The guy is maybe worth half of that on a good day. Still in shock he got that contract. Makes him very tough to trade now, unless Leafs agree to retain some of it.
I think Lilje has had a lot of time with the Leafs, and he has looked good for stretches, and he has had bad stretches too. Seems that Tre' and Berube like more physicality than the Leafs have typicaly had on the back end, which makes Lilje a bit of the odd man out. I think he will be moved to get rid of the cap hit, not sure what he would bring back in a trade though, maybe a 2nd or 3rd round pick would be my guess
I believe Toronto plays Montreal opening night on Wednesday so you know it will be a tough decision as to which goalie starts I think I would start Stolars just because he is the new guy probably not a good reason but now its regular season so we can see how he does he did look good in pre season

@@michaelkirkpatrick7483 Personally i think if he does get traded the Leafs would need to give a "sweetener" such as a draft pick (mid range pick).

Sitting Lilly is the right move. He's a liabilty in his own end. I'd love to see the Leafs shed his cap.
