  • Hello you all!
    So many of you were recently subscribing to our channel! We are so grateful! Sending you love from Denmark.
    I have been struggling with the fit of the Powerslide Next Arctic Greys for the last six months.
    So today is the new skate day - I got myself some FR1 90 blades.
    While I was a bit worried if this will be another skate that does not fit me well, 100% honestly - these skates exceeded my expectations! It is a very high-level quality skate. I will make an update video after a while when I see how they lasted.
    Time log:
    00:00 - Intro
    02:30 - Unboxing and detailed overview
    12:30 - First impressions rolling
    15:40 - Some uncut rolling footage

    Would have loved to have seen you skate the stock FR1 liner to hear your impressions about its fit, feel and performance, before it’s broken in and after it’s broken in. While I’m sure the intuition is the ideal liner for many, it’s simply out of my, and many people’s price range as an addition to this skate.

    • @VandKoala
      @VandKoala  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I know man, but even if the stock liner worked for me it does not mean it would for work you. Intuitions do not work for anyone either 🤷🏻‍♂️ at least with “my liner” I can tell if skate works/feel well. I still have not skated the stock liner on these skates and I doubt I will

    • @mountainpeakcloud8442
      @mountainpeakcloud8442 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@VandKoala While no liner will fit everyone, testing the stock liner, and reviewing it, would provide valuable info as to the quality, responsiveness, performance before and after break in, how much the liner packs down after break in etc. It would help people become more informed as to what they're getting. Not reviewing the liner, because it may not fit someone is like not review a skate because it may not fit someone (example: many wide foot people will not fit an M12, RB Twister, and many narrow foot people will not fit the FR skates well etc. not every skate fit's everyone). If you're goal is to just give your impressions of your "personal" setup for the sake of sharing your passion with the world, then I understand why you didn't review the stock liner, but if you're trying to review the skate to help people decide if they should get the FR1, then it's best to test and review every aspect of what comes in the box. Just a thought to consider for the future.

      @@mountainpeakcloud8442 I had a pair of FR3 skates, which have exactly the same liner. They are OK, but for some reason I had a weird pressure point where they touched my shinbone. But this depends on how far up you lace your boots. Sometimes I dont lace the liner, only the boot, and tie the laces around the boot on the height of the ankle. This way the liner is more free near the shinbone and the pressure-point disappeared. However, I finally changed the FR stock liner and put in a MyFit basic liner from the Powerslide-Zoom model. They felt much more comfortable right from the start.

    • @mountainpeakcloud8442
      @mountainpeakcloud8442 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@nulldemokratiezwei7773 I see, that's interesting, thanks for your experience. I've had a very different experience with the stock liner. I have skinny legs, so even when I tighten the liner all the way up to the top, as tight as I can, it just gently hugs my shin, but doesn't bite into it. I suppose it depends on the volume of your legs and feet... if you have thicker legs, you may be more prone to that kind of pressure point on your shin, but if you have skinnier legs, it will probably be very comfortable.

    Glad you found some big wheel skates that fit you well. I had heard the old Seba FR skates were good for wide feet. I've also heard that many have had fit issues with the Powerslide Next. I used to think that 4x80mm was the perfect urban freeskate. But I'm now starting to think that 4x90mm is the new 4x80mm!

    • @VandKoala
      @VandKoala  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Rolling Dubai Guy! The funny part is that I never ever thought in my life I had wide feet :) Nexts changed it. I can (and will) spend hours in my FRs without any discomfort.
      I used to think the same with 4x80, but when I came back to blading after a long time and gave them a try - I did not like the short frames. Same with 3x110. I can and am riding them now and then, but when I get on 4x90 it feels so much better.
      And it makes sense when you think of it. Someone with boot size 39 and 45 will find the same frame lenght feels different.
      With the brand new wheels I would love some more maneuvrability, but I will only rotate and not switch the wheels - after 5-6 rolling hours my skates will already be rockered and super maneuvrable.

    Aloha from Hawai’i and fellow FR skate owner, I currently have the FRX 80mm 2019 pair. It's my first pair ever and have been enjoying the journey these 4 months or so I've owned them.
    What's your opinion on those large 110mm triskate setups? Would it be simple to just keep my current boot and swap the frames + wheels? Don't want to go through the hassle of breaking in a new boot if I can manage since my feet are supa wide af.
    Sorry for wall of text, subscribed and thx for any insight.

    • @VandKoala
      @VandKoala  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, if you like 4x80 - go ahead and try the 3x110 frames. No need to change boots in my opinion if you can just buy the frame. It is the same frame length so no big difference on that. 3x110 will be way better for "bad surfaces" - rolls over small bumps easier, more coast when you get them rolling.
      At the same time takes more effort to accelerate, less agile, less grip, tougher landing from jumps/stairs, less stability due to higher centre of gravity and a bit more sketchy riding down the stairs :)
      So depending what kind of riding you do you will either like them or not.
      Thanks for the support mate!

    i have had the powerslide next for about a year now skating on and off. Could you talk more about the pressure points you felt. I feel I have a similar issue where they never felt comfortable. I would wear them for 30-60 mins max at a time becasue my left and right side of the foot would feel too squeezed. Is this the pressure you felt and would I also benefit from looking for a model that is a bit wider on the toebox?

      Hi, thanks! :)
      You can put 80mm wheels on 90mm frame with no problems :)
      FR skates have pretty good wheels in my opinion. I am still riding stock ones, you just need to rotate them as they wear. The first set will last you several months don’t worry. The 90mm wheels that came with the skates are supper grippy, wear very slow, I love them.
      For “big wheel” skates I like Hydrogen wheels, FR “street invaders” are well know for a great grip and they last forever :)

      You see the stock liners are 280mm long inside and that is exactly 5mm shorter than what I need for my feet :) I have quite sensitive feet I am afraid I will not make any good judgment with a liner that is a bit small.
      And on the other hand - taking the liner that I already have and am used to lets me see how the skates work.
      If there will be more dry days here I might do the opposite - try out the stock liner now, when I know how the skates work and then make a full review describing the difference :)

      @@VandKoala Thank you for your reply and your kind encouraging words. My skates are on their way to me. I managed to get some smaller, 76mm, wheels from a friend. I’m thinking, that with the smaller wheels on my skates, I won’t have to worry about too much speed while I learn all the tricks, and then after a few months, put the 90mm wheels back on. It’s like learning your balance, coordination, edge control, etc. on a slow green ski slope, and then taking those skills to the black runs that have more speed. It should be an interesting experiment. Best wishes.

      @@andrewjohnson1253 I learned to skate in-line. It was great to switch to smaller wheels. Learned the basics really quickly, and then it was much easier skating with the bigger wheels. I didn’t have to learn the basics and having to control run-away speed on the bigger wheels at the same time. I recommend this progression to anyone first learning how to skate. It’s also a lot safer I found. I had hardly any spills compared to friends who learned on fast wheels.

      Not at all. My foot is 44 and I've skated 4x80, 4x100, 3x90, 3x110, 3x125. Every frame setup works a bit different and you got to try them to know what you like best.
      The shorter the frame and the smaller the wheels - the more maneuverability you get. Which is nice if you like slalom type skating.
      If you like more speed and stability - longer frames with bigger wheels work better.

      Well, the wheels of the same profile would feel very similar, but of course there is an impact from the frame length: - longer frames are more stable, turn slower than the shorter ones. The difference is negligible though, and rockered frames/naturally worn wheels to a rocker still make them maneuverable as crazy :)

    13:46 I can't do crossovers like that... mostly at the and of the crossovers, the outside ankle, of my inside leg(right in the outside bone, and a little bit below, sorry not being more specific, I don't know the name of the bone), hurts a lot. so much that after a few of those, I can barely skate anymore.
    What do you think might be wrong?
    I tried pulling my inside leg earlier but it hurts anyway, maybe a little bit less. I think It might be something to do with how tightened my cuf is. The thing is that if I tighten it, I start to feel some pressure in the legs while bending the knee above where it should be(the toes). Is that right? should I feel I little bit of pressure there? Also, my skates are the right size, and at least the foot part is well tightened. My heels are looked to the bottom of the skate and if I lift and wiggle my foot, it keeps the same. just the cuf that seems to be somewhat looser than they should.

    • @VandKoala
      @VandKoala  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi mate, it is hard to say. I am of the opinion that it should generally not hurt when you skate :)
      I had a similar issue with USD aeons hurting my inner ankle bone and the only thing that helped was replacement of the cuff (and I tried heat moulding the boot, neoprene ankle supports, dremelling the sharper edges, replacing 3 different liners etc.). What boot are you skating?

    • @kalelalves
      @kalelalves 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@VandKoala that's strange for me since normally, my foot does not hurt at all. It was only when I begin the crossover training that I started feeling that.
      I'm using a hard boot, with a fairly soft liner. it's not a high-end skate, but it is a good entry point. It is closer to the price of a high end one, like Fila NRK, than the cheap ones, at least in my country.
      I thought I would have something to do with how much I'm twisting my ankles of the supporting(inside) leg, when finishing the crossover, hence the reason why I told about the loose cuf, but I'm not so sure about that. I've been looking at those speed skaters and they twist their ankle a lot when doing crossovers, also, there is no cuf to support the inside leg. Of course, these guys train a lot... perhaps is that as well and my ankles are not strong enough, though I never saw anything about ankle exercises for crossovers.

    Hi friend, I'm thinking of buying some skates. But I've been looking for some skates that are very comfortable and very versatile. I've been looking at various options including the next 80mm. But every time I feel more confused I want to know what skates would recommend me that are really comfortable and are very manageable to turn, jump and move smoothly.

      Hi mate, it is a very hard question, especially the “comfortable” part. Some people find the Nexts comfortable. I can’t wear them (and many others as well). It is the best if you can try some models at a shop. If you find a comfortable skates - you will be able to do everything that you want, despite if it is 4x80 or 4x90 or any other frame. It comes down to how many hours you practice more than to the size of the wheels...

      @@VandKoala The difficult thing is that here in Colombia one does not find a store with enough models of skates and generally the prices are very high. Clearly the ideal would be to go try on various brands and sizes, but it is impossible, so I asked you, who have more experience if you would recommend some skates in general, that you think are comfortable enough for anyone. I have a lot of experience skating because when I was in high school I skated a lot, jumping and ramping but now that I'm almost 40 years old I want to buy something I can enjoy and I see that many other references have come out. About 5 years ago I bought a powerslide-phuzion-7-open-air, but it didn't feel comfortable and I didn't enjoy it because it felt uncomfortable and unstable.

      @VandKoala  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Diego Sanchez I can understand that and I would love to help you, but we all have very different feet... there are no skates comfortable for everyone.
      I can tell now that FR1s are much better for wider feet than the Nexts. I have never considered my feet as wide 🙄 many people complained about the Nexts being too narrow.
      This is soul have measured the aggressive shells - maybe that will provide some info on the brand sizing: th-cam.com/video/LpBRTEBgNsU/w-d-xo.html there are links in their description.

    Hi there
    thanks for a great video.
    been watching your vids for a while now :-)
    would love to hear your opinion if you can help.
    i just got of the FR website and saw they have the FR1 90 mm...like the ones that you got, and also they have the UFR 90 with Intuition liver and a natural rocker (1 mm) frame.
    do you have any words about that model after getting your FR1??
    and for the price differnce...what do you think?
    FR1 90 are 399$
    and UFR 90 with Intuition liver frame and upgraded wheels and bearings are 479$
    80$ difference
    would love to hear your opinion on it :-)
    and if anybody else have tried them...:-)
    thanks a lot for the help
    and keep on doing the awesome vid's that you do.

    • @VandKoala
      @VandKoala  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      "Possible" is a strong word :) Everything is possible, but grinding on "freeskates" is very impractical. The closest skate "between the two worlds" is USD Aeon. 80mm closer to freeskate, 60mm closer to aggressive skate.

    Should I get rockered or flat 4x90s beginner here

    • @VandKoala
      @VandKoala  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It depends what are you going to do. If you gonna "just skate" go with flat, it will be enough "movement" down there for a beginner without rockering. The wheels will wear-in and you can get them rockered by rotating, but not changing places. Generally, for beginners I would recommend going flat, unless oriented to slalom
