- BUILDING THE RIVER BANKS, WALLS & STEPS & a sneaky peak of the building plans.
I started the week with a huge burst of energy, but the the dreaded lurgy strikes halting progress. However, I did start to look at the building plans for the mill. Enjoy!

I love the truly organic feel to this area. It’s coming along nicely. Have fun at Warley. Take care.
The distance view looks fantastic John.
A lot in this one John. The view when you pulled back was very good. It really shows how much you've achieved over the recent months. The Mill is going to be a real centrepiece. They are big buildings so anything to scale is going to be imposing. I think you've made the right call just to take the top floor off to stop it overwhelming that part of the layout. Look forward to seeing you next week at Warley. I'll be there from opening until about 3pm on the Saturday. There are some particularly good N gauge layouts this year. Stephen
Thanks Stephen, I may reduce it slightly more but I dont want to lose the essence of ghe building.
Itll be great to finally meet you next week, I feel Ive known you for a fair while, although weve never met, strange isnt it?
Looks very good
The long shot does really show what a great job you have made of this area. I forgot to comment on the last video and the walkway looks good .
Cheers Kev
Thanks Kev, honestly please don’t worry about commenting, always gratefully received don’t feel you have to. I’m just so glad you enjoy the videos.
Are you at Warley? I do appreciate it is quite a trek.
Hi John
I won’t be at Warley but I will look to get to Alexander Palace in the New Year .
Have a good time when you go.
Cheers Kev
Hi John we have to compromise so I agree you do need the top layer of the mill removing. The trees look great as well. Nice plans and yes hopefully meet at Warley I'll keep my eyes open for the badge lol atb Andy
Thx Andy, it’ll be great to meet you. I know what you look like so hopefully we’ll meet.
It's all looking so very very good John - cracking on and well thought out. I can't get to Warley this year, but hopefully in the diary for next year. Take care.
Regards
Steve
Thank you Steve, its a shame we wont meet on this occasion, but I do understand. Warley show, being the biggest is the most expensive to simplly get there and get in. Many have said they wont be at this one. Time will tell. Take care catch you at some point.
Excellent work, and the whole area looks great. I do wonder, whilst keeping the main building to scale whether it might be an idea to shrink the overall area of the building both in height and width a d le gth, so as not to over dominate the whole scene. Although ax i say, overall its looking brilliant!
Hi Keith, my main issue is the height and it really needs to be lowered. BUT if I did that I would effectively undo most of the work achieved this year. I do want to keep the essence if the building and making it much smaller could take away from what it is. There are significant areas around the mill that need attention. I could see if the building could be squashed slightly but we would only be millimetres. Trees would also wrap around the front slightly.
Ill do a video showing the area, its huge with so many facets, so there will be masses to look at. It wont be a quick build.
John, you always find a solution to the problems that arise. You are a great source of information and inspiration. Love your videos 👍
Where do you get your trees from looks amazing 👏
Hi, thank you. I make them with lichen, course foliage and fine scatters.
Hi John, I agree with your assessment of the building but does look better I think the greenery look fab too. Susannah
Absolutely love how it's developing now John, looking forward to seeing more soon.
Take care
Andy
That area is really coming along nicely. I'm looking forward to seeing it develop. Cheers, James 🙂👍
Great update John!! Thanks for sharing mate! Cheers Onno.
Hi John, the foliage in the background looks really good it’s nice and full, really fills the spot properly.
As for the building I like the idea of taking the top floor off, it still looks right, I actually thought maybe of taking two floors off but I think the building wouldn’t look right then and would take away from the old mill look. A big part of building a model railway for me is the buildings, I really enjoy building them either from scratch or kits. It fascinates me watching build videos and how people go about them.
Enjoy Warley, Cheers John, John
Hi John, the building did need reducing, I will probably remove one column of windows from each side too to give space to the outside areas. Its a very complex building with so many areas. I do want to do it justice, but it wont be a quick one video build.
Hi John 👍 Absolutely excellent scenery everything is fitting in place nicely. Thanks for sharing.
As a member of Warley I will be at the show every day so hopefully we will get to meet up. Most of the time I will be on the club stand on Cradle to the Grave diorama and operating Andy Hudson’s O gauge diorama so hopefully you will see me.
Best regards
Andy
Hi Andy, thank you for your kind words. Itll be great to meet you in person. Ill be wearing my PICCADILLY MR badge so hopefully we can recognise each other.
Hi John! I'm really enjoying watching you bring this area together! Now that the greenery is around the outside, with the walkway, steps and handrails all in place, you can really get a feel for the original location! You came up with an ingenious way to gauge the size of the buildings too, and I look forward to seeing how these progress! Have a wonderful time at Warley! All the best, Ian.
Thanks Ian, I agree scenery does make all the difference, hint hint, lol. I got the idea of using the door to scale from someone else, nothing new under the sun.
Wow John - all that dense tree and foliage certainly hits the mark - looks spot on. Once you have the buildings in the whole area will come together as one. Loving the different track levels which are superbly worked into the scenery. Hope you enjoy Warley this coming weekend. Cheers Euan
Thanks Euan, I’m pleased with how it’s come out. Wanting to start the mill, loads to work out first though
The transformation with all the scenic work looks great! Will look to do similar with one of my tunnels! Looking forward to what your going to be going to be doing with the mill, it should really finish off the scene! Cheers Gary
Thx Gary, it’s good fun to do. Mill is a very complex build with many aspects
I'll be at Warley! Exhibiting my Dad's 2mm 'Freshwater' layout, but as an N gauge man myself I'll see if I can find you and say hi!
Hi, yes it would be lovely to meet you.
John, I like the collage of scenes that you have achieved. They are linking nicely. With respect to the mill, I would keep the top floor and roof parapet arrangement and remove one of the lower floors. This would maintain the building style. I know that this is eye-sweet as I have a representation of Weir mill in Stockport on the go and have inadvertently missed out a full column of windows, but in the matrix, you cannot tell. Like you, I think a fair representation, not an engineering model, is what's required. My Stockport viaduct has 11 arches, not 22.... and so it goes on. The atmosphere around the mill and river is just right. Regards, Stephen.
Absolutely, the idea of removing a storey to reduce the height. In reality it’ll probably be one of the middle floors, I will include as much of the building detail as possible. I might remove one column of windows from each side too.
Great scenery!....the steps could be for maintenance access for on the walkway and....after floods etc.
Hi, probably so, the water would be quite fast moving even on a calm day.
This is coming along really well John. I agree with you about the mill. Losing the top floor is the right decision. This area is epic. Enjoy Warley. Unfortunately I can’t be there, too many things going on the same weekend for me. Look forward to seeing what you get up to there. Thanks for sharing. Roy.
Thanks Roy, I may reduce it slightly more length and width. We’ll see. Sorry we won’t meet on this occasion, hopefully one day.
Hi John, just want to say that I've been watching Piccadilly evolve for a few years and I must say that you have a fabulous layout. The scenics and attention to the detail of the buildings is outstanding. I think you mentioned that you weren't able to see from Google Earth much detail around the rear of the mill. I just happened to be in the area today and took some photos and video around the back at the far end of the millenium walkway so if it would help you fill in any blanks I'd be more than happy to pass the pictures on to you if you let me know how best to do it. Keep up the good work. Rod
Thank you so much, thats so very kind of you. I definitely wont say no, as as much resource material can sometimes be hard to come by. I have a facebook page, if you click 'message' you can send them there.
I did also come across the website for the mill itself, as it has been converted into an 'events' place. They have given me kind permission to show this on the channel. So with Google Earth too I short be able to produce a fair representation of the site. Thank you
Just found this amazing site. Loving the detail of the overgrown vegetation and the near dereliction of the area. Very well done 👏
Thank you Martin glad you like it. Maybe have a look through the playlist. I’ve built Manchester Piccadilly, Dinting station and Dinting Viaduct, not forgetting New Mills Central. The scene in today’s video adds to NM Cent.
@@piccadillymodelrailways I'm just working my way through the list. Great work. 👍
I would make the scale of the building a bit larger and go to 3 stores high and even less windows width ways if need be, but you're the modeler, so do what makes you happy. All the best.
Hi, thank you for the suggestion, I would but the space around the mill is occupied and need space to model those areas too. It’s a huge site with so much packed in. Thank you for watching and commenting
