I did enjoy the monologues. My family used to tape his show and send me the tapes to listen to when I was abroad. I still have most of those tapes, as well as some of the commercial recordings of his best stories. Some were better than others or were repetitious. I especially liked the silly fake ads on the show and some satirical skits. I went to the 42nd anniversary festival at McCallister College in St. Paul. I do miss the show, and was sorry that it got cancelled. But time marches on. I listened to Jack Benny and Burns and Allen as a child, now they are gone. Nothing lasts forever. I think I will start listening to my old PHC tapes again. From what I have heard, he got in trouble because of his relation with a coworker, and his emails. But he did so much for MPR with the show, one wonders if he could not have been forgiven. A lot of performers and people in politics are forgiven for their past sins. It is not entirely consistent. The woke movement has led to people being cancelled without their having done much that was really bad.
Maybe some of the Garrison haters are jealous of his success. Or maybe they just have to target someone, or they don't understand his sophisticated, dry sense of humor. The man, to me, is amazing. How he goes into his stories with all of the names he uses, and recites verses from memory is astounding to me. I've seen him in performance four times, and he never uses any written down notes. The last show was a whole two-hour show with just him up there talking about bits and pieces from some of his Lake Wobegon monologues. He didn't even do an intermission.
Lots of anti Christians probably in the mix too. Gotta watch out for too much "religion." Did not bode well for Garrison. We have lost a national treasure to them.
I never get tired of listening to the Lake Wobegon box sets from the 80s and 90s. I bought five sets on cassette a long time ago; I've now bought most of them again from iTunes. I put them all on a USB stick so I can listen to them when I go to bed.
That he is. "Genius" is a word oft-tossed-about, but in his case, I think it is exactly accurate. He found this niche, no-one else could do this. Not to say it's his only skill, but it's the one people love best, with a reason. Although I suspect people from rural, northern areas understand it the best; I can't imagine anyone from NYC really getting it....they probably think he's making it all up, but we know that there is a great deal of truth there.
Okay, The DISH died and we are waiting for the "guy" to get it going in three days. So, this is what I found and it is hysterical. Kept going looking for more and more. Must be growing up Nordic or Dutch gives you a lot of commonality. Love it.... Better than network and DISH television. Thanks Keillor.....
I think Garrison is a wonderful story teller, it's a great gift he has been given., Very funny and if you can't laugh at his story's, then you have no sence of humor.
Garrison's stories aren't made for everyone's senses of humor. Maybe those people laugh at things that you don't find humorous. Try not to be so quick to dismiss people. 🤗
Please listen to his interviews about why he was fired. GK admitted to not playing fairly with women for years. I miss not being able to tune in APHC, but GK has another venue. Check it out 🙂
Here is a picture of me fishing off a dock on Lake Wobegon. We don't know what is wrong with Derek Smith. He is an outsider but we are kind to those people. They really mean no harm.
love GK's story telling- writers almanac prints a lot of "poetry" that is actually prose- to me- line lenghts- lines cut arbitrarily- but then- they feel they have to have a pome a day- better-to me- a poem a week and more quality
Some shows are better than others. I have many on tape from the eighties. I have worn some out from play and wish I still had them. The one with the music of many georges. Anyone remember that one? I would love to find that to listen to again. Anyone have that? Lets trade tapes like deadheads.
Like everything else - if you don't care for Garrison Keillor - turn the channel. Don't get on here blasting him. Nobody cares what you think anyway. Your opinions matter to no one important. You haters are just plain rude - it must be sad to be you.
That's right! The H'Mong have moved there. Is General VANG PAO still alive? Last I heard there are still H'Mongs in LAOS who are still fighting for their survival (against bio-chemical warfare).
No absolutely not. This is very funny! But I don´t think it´s what you usually refer as typical American humor. Garrison Keillor is Minnesotan. I´m Swedish and it´s interesting that this resemble more traditional Swedish humor a lot. I can really recognise and understand it. And it´s very funny.
I heard that he had been boycotted by MPR and leftists for humorous comments in emails. That seems a bit unfair. I did not like the pro-Dem attitude in the skits and humor on the show, which almost always attacked Bush and the Republicans but left Obama and the Dems unscathed. That tended to make me switch the show off. Now being-pro-leftist seems not to have protected him. That is really too bad. There is simply no sense of humor among today's woke leftists. Of course he is getting old now anyway. I don't think he is as great as Mark Twain, however. No one can compete with Mark Twain, but of course Twain is not around anymore to comment on current events.
Yes. When will these people learn to just their politics out of things. Every time they start shooting their mouths off they loose 50% of their viewer ship
Mark Twain was a radical at his time. He was vice-president of the Anti-Imperialist League and opposed the criminal US war on the Philippines in 1900. But I don't expect Republicans to know any history or understand anything for that matter.
Perhaps for those of us with a deficit of brain cells. For those of us capable of thinking, this is very stimulating stuff. Imagine, humor that makes you THINK in order to get the joke, entertainment that makes you analyze to interpret what he's really saying, the underlying message. His voice is soothing, no doubt, but I doubt I could fall asleep listening to it...to absorbed with what he's saying. The rest of public radio makes a decent soporific, however (I admit it's been some time since I've listened to it though).
Yeah there's a lot of intelligent comedy out there - that's actually funny for people under the age of 90. And if you think that this is intelligent and stimulating... well then I pity you.
I have listened to him for years., long ago on books on tape when driving long haul, he can make you laugh and make you cry,,,
Just don't fall asleep at the wheel when you listen to him....his voice is so cathartic to me.
Just wonderful...each time I listen I discover a new detail...thank you so much ❤️
I used to listen to him when I drove semi. He helped the miles disappear. Such great stories.

Geez why the politics ffs

@@phaneserichthoneus8895 For sure. Sometimes Garrison's soothing voice has been like a catharsis to me. But, of course, he's so much more than that.
The me too movement was started from the girl that shot Garp.😏
@@shaneharris3586 Hmmm... The "World According to Garp?" That goes back a long way.
a living masterpiece he truly is

"It's been a quiet week in Lake Woebegone,..." Garrison's home town- but it is very much alive and active, right now!
I loved his radio show. He's got a great radio voice.
How he can paint with words. Wow
Now I know what men talk about and do when amongst themselves. Thank you.
I love your show...
Ol' Garry Keillor got even more spunky in his old age! It is a treat to hear him again.

A man, audience and memory. Nothing better than an off the cuff story teller. He might just be the last of his kind. Sure miss Garrison.
We have lost our way when we vilify a man like Garrison.

What a joy
Love "The news from Lake Wobegon," G.K books are great! One of my favorites is the jerk squirrel, and the civil war / kids.
That laughing deer part killed me...... XD
I can't tell if Mark Twain would love this guy or hate him.
very funny ...........this kind of humor is only for people who are real people.......like those from Lake Wobegon.....
+Onepsalmist Collins Where the women are strong, the men are good - looking & the children are above average.
There's a very strange sound at 3:23.
"...he was wheezing and bent all over...died of a heart attack.." I nearly died of a laughing attack.
He's almost as good as Mark Twain. But Mark Twain is already dead. He's the best possible humorist we get so we are laughing and we are happy.
Makes you wonder what kind of trouble Mark would have gotten into in today's world. Likely banned by now.
Man, I miss this radio show! 🤦🏽♂️😡
omg, that is a funny one GK, thank you for the laughs

SPLENDID
You're right. it's zzzzZZzz but it's simple fun with subtle humor that common people don't get.
Nice Saucony running shoes!

There are a lot of Swedes here in Minnesota :P
He drove to his aunt Flo's house in 1951? At age 9?
Quite common in rural areas. You see kids on tractors in the fields, barely tall enough to see over the steering.
Food, coffee, Gopher Hockey, Garrison Keillor

Amen Grammie!!
THE RUDENESS AND THUS THE "SAD BELONG TO ONLY YOU. YOU SEEM TO HAVE A MIGHTY HIGH OPINION OF YOURSELF.
There ya go ladies...a world where men dont want to interact with you whatsoever, for fear of accusations.... Ya happy.
That's right! The H'Mong have moved there. Is General VANG PAO still alive? Last I heard there are still H'Mongs in LAOS who are still fighting for their survival (against bio-chemical warfare).
And all the kids are Above Average
It's shameful how he's been erased by the woke mob.
Gentle, regional humor. For some people, makes no sense; guess you just had to be there or have relatives who did.
Clever comedy

So funny.
Re: Swedes in Minnesota....you'll get over it. The Mong are taking their place. Every state needs a minority... Even if they change from time to time.
Hilariously, mildly vulgar latter part of performance ... worth waiting for.

1951 was never a good year for Garrison.
1951 was a record cold year.
APHC Is the perfect cute for insomnia
