An Air NZ pilot told me once that when taking off into the Northerly it was the wind that made it safer. His view was that if you lost an engine you only had one option and that was to pull a hard right and exit via the harbor entrance. Going up the Hutt Valley isn't on and the Newlands escarpment to the North needs altitude that you might not have. Couple of weeks ago I watched a Singapore B777 land from the north. Not a particularly large craft but coming down Evans Bay it looked huge. Good to see a Straits Air Cessna Caravan in the mix. Those guys (and gals) land in Welly 5 or 6 times a shift.
I've been in one of these landings before and I thought I was going to die. The turbulence coming in was so horrendous I felt like throwing up and my hands were white I was gripping the handrests so tightly. I have never been scared of flying but that day made me want to find another of way of getting back to Chch!
Had two go rounds on Wednesday then back to Auckland, back on another flight 30 mins later, managed to land (just) that time. All part of the fun flying in and out of Wellington, You want to try the Inter Island ferries on a rough day !
Not for the timid or nervous passenger. Which ever way you leave the island, by sea or air, the journey can be truly memorable for the extreme weather.
Wellington has a very defined landing area due to short runway. Check the go around at 3:30. If you miss thatin a jet you have to go around. From looking at the location of the aircraft at 11:50, I think it would have missed the landing area. The pilot made a choice to abort early, which is always good. Then, again, it could have been windshear as Andrew says. Or the pilot had to make a quick toilet break!
Last year I saw a 2 seater piper land 2 minutes behind a 767, sure enough just into the falling vortex. The piper went sideways and up onto one wing 30 ft of the ground but the pilot got it back and landed.
I flew into Wellington on an Ansett 737 in 1997. I had a port window seat and briefly got a clear view of the runway about 500 ft off the ground. I don't know if that's normal but it seemed a bit odd to me.
What are you talking about exyreme? The majority of those landings are in calm weather mate. When you see the waves over the rocks and onto the runway then you can talk extreme. Wellingtons always been a fun airport to watch planes in and out. And to travel into. There was that time when a plane almost clipped the picton ferry, guess the pilot thought it was an aircraft carrier..
Wow! What a video! If I was there personally, I would have been squeezing my butt cheeks. Those landings looked so dangerous haha. I've noticed Wellington is a very very windy airport, is it like that always?
I live close this airport. This is all fairly average. I ride a bike most days. It can be very hard work. Apparently, we have about 80 days a year when the average wind gust exceeds 60 mph, or 100 kph. I wouldn't live anywhere else...
I recon Air New Zealand should and could fly Wellington to Perth and Perth to Wellington using the 787-9 Full Time They don't do this route currently . As the only routes they have from Wellington are Wellington to Melborune and Wellington to Sydney using A320-200s
At 11:50 while it is approaching smmothly to the runway, pilot suddenly cancel landing by giving up throttle. It likes going well, strange why he\she decided to abort?
been there done that in fokker friendship as landing you can see the whole runway as the plane is sideways and at last minute he pull plane around at last minute brilliant
Great footage! I often fly from Australia to NZ (primarily AKL, CHC and ZQN) but haven't yet flown into Wellington. I'll have to add it to my list! :)
Maybe it is a good idea to wear brown underpants if you do fly into Wellington. Just in case.
My Grandmother lives in Wellington

Just taking my chopper to the warehouse, no big deal

No you don't lol
Wheres your sense of 'adventure' makes life more interesting.
Haha just joking I mean, people throw up on those rides
+Robyn Wright it's all good fun, don't get drinks on early flights only if you go on dinner time.....!
I've been on the InterIslander and trust me, when I went tot the outside bit on the top, it was windy AF! I thought I was gonna fall off!
3:10 is me attempting to land on the Microsoft Simulator under perfect weather lol
Inlustris there is no such thing called perfect weather. You can say good weather but definitely not perfect weather lol
so Clear blue, very calm winds, dry and warm not perfect weather then?
Some awesome filming here. Great video thanks.

What not normal in a crosswind landing?
Great capture! Where is the spotting area from the hills? Easy to get to by car?
The touch-downs all looked pretty good, at the end. The approach into Wellie can be a little fractious for the Pax....
Sounds air at 2:30 HOLY WHAT A TAKEOFF
yeah i have driven along cobham drive in strong winds and at times been going faster than the sound air cessna caravan on take off.

Zafer - they probably got a windshear warning in which case a go- around is mandatory
what make is the first plane please? Thank You. ✈️
Yes. The whole Wellington is windy
The ATR with the black tailfin is also a 600 version.
Hahaha the Welly merry go round. Cant beat landing at Welly👍✈👍
I'm from Wellington so I've had to fly in and out of here heaps!!! Hahah
it seems that 737 is not capable at landing in crosswind especially in wellington. Sorry for 737 pilots. lol
That dude in the Beech 1900 was like.. Hold my beer
That All blacks livery ATR 72 is one of the new 600 models.
Some good flying but surprised landings attempted in 40 kts.
EXTREME LANDINGS - STARTS WITH A TAKE OFF! AM I MISSING SOMETHING HERE?
Wow! What a video! If I was there personally, I would have been squeezing my butt cheeks. Those landings looked so dangerous haha. I've noticed Wellington is a very very windy airport, is it like that always?
I live there and, man it's windy. It's not always like this like once a fortnight
Yep it's kind of windy some days but once a fortnight it's like gailforce
Take a look at the sea in the background. That's all you need to know about Wellington.
Take a look at the sea in the background. That's all you need to know about Wellington.
Always. Because the airports is near a beach other wise if it wasn't it would be peaceful :)
That first Jetstream looks like me taking off with JRollon's BAe Jetstream 32 in X-Plane 10.
just another day in paradise ! miss it!
Beautiful touchdown at 7:27.
"extreme landings in NZ"
shows takeoffs
Haha
HAHAHAHAHAGAGAGAGAGAGAHAGSGSTCYSYXYAGAGSGGCY
Well you may think the strait can get a little hairy, Wgtn Airport can as well, sometimes you don't even get to land lol.
...gifted pilot @ 8:00...
That's more than gifted
What strength of wind was it ? In beaufort ?
It is 8 beaufort.

Nice video, very interesting!
Short runway, 40knt crosswinds, , gotta be a challenge

They don't do this route currently .
As the only routes they have from Wellington are
Wellington to Melborune
and
Wellington to Sydney using A320-200s
There is also Wellington to Brisbane (A320-200)
and Wellington to Canberra (777-212ER)
You won't get a 789 out of Wellington with the fuel load to get to Perth.
I agree, the runway is to short for a nearly full 787-9
@@Rhys_Yellow-Pac-Man Please note I commented that 2 years ago when it was in fact to Canberra. :)
be nice to have heard the atc comms as well.
Sux they only shot a northerly, a damn good southerly is even worse
takeoffs stopped as they fly past... why..
At the airport hotels, instead of a mint on the pillow, they leave an air-sickness bag!🤢
Lol
Pas terrible les flottes
Avant c'était mieux 767 TriStar etc..
Maintenant 320 bof cest des bus en expression.
L'image est trop mignon avec la Mer.❤
Is so amazing :)
THAT WAS AWSOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'VE ALWAYS WANTED TO BE A PILOT SO THAT WOULD BE PRETTY COOL TO LAND THAT PLANE IN THAT WEATER
Great video!!
Wellington, just another day at the office.
They don't call it Windy Wellington for nothing.. I ❤️ Wgtn 👍🇳🇿
Not an airport id want to fly to on a really windy day
Hahaha was that Kim DotComs helicopter?
5:50 That is a real pilot
That wasnt even a good landing any pilot could do it
wow what about 3:25 they go down for landing but take off again
Yeah the missed the touch down zone by heaps
i wish my terrifying landing was in this, middle of the night, medium sized plane, middle of a storm.... not a good combination
shouldn't this be titled 'extreme landings AND take offs'?
Wow ,these pilots are amazing !!!!!!!
At 11:50 while it is approaching smmothly to the runway, pilot suddenly cancel landing by giving up throttle. It likes going well, strange why he\she decided to abort?
I had a scary flight above the clouds Pakistan to dubai but I finally got in dubai
nice video
Sounded like they already had emergency crew going on the first one.lol
Ok, I don't know if I want to go to NZ now xD
Don’t worry it’s not like this anymore I mean we will get the occasional windy day but it’s nothing
@@Attomicc076 thanks!
The crash record is a good example of " make it difficult and folk will take care.".....zero fatalities in the 61 years of the airports operation.
A few people in the Jetstream throwing up!
Amazing
white caps = oh Crap!
Dash 8's can land anywhere.
3:25
been there done that in fokker friendship as landing you can see the whole runway as the plane is sideways and at last minute he pull plane around at last minute brilliant
Soft Landing By The Qantas 737-800
Yes, aussie pilots anyday
6:25 sad
Left Leg workout weather
I would love to fly in that weather
You being sarcastic?
Yea same!!!
Wellington is not scummy
It was wild!!!
No thank you. Turbulence spells road trip!
awesome video :)
Not a fun day, eh m8?
Wow landed in other side, don't felt that , was more rainy that windy day
Flying is a hack... It is not natural....:D
Your opinions are stupid. Go spread your negative personality somewhere else 😕
FA
3:10 :)
HOTTTTT
They drive is a noob people like zombie in side
A notoriously nasty place to fly in and out of. You will need to bring your "A" game. :)
Who thinks 757s look ugly?
HaHa, the peealot at 11:40, bottled it early, WIMP!
Warning! NOT Recommended for Sensible People. :)
